(NARRATOR)>> TODAY ON ENGINE POWER WORK CONTINUES ON THE TRIPLE THREAT CAMARO. IT'LL COMPETE IN A DYNO SHOOTOUT, CARVE THE CORNERS AT NCM MOTORSPORTS PARK, AND RIP DOWN THE QUARTER MILE AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY. SPEAKING OF BEECH BEND, PAT AND MIKE ARE OUT THERE RIGHT NOW!
(MIKE)>> WE SNUCK OUT OF THE SHOP AND HEADED NORTH TO ONE OF OUR FAVORITE LITTLE TOWNS. A PLACE VERY RICH IN MOTORSPORTS HISTORY, BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY, AND WE'RE HERE AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY PARK TO WATCH SOME OF THE FASTEST SMALL TIRES IN THE WORLD GO DOWN THIS LEGENDARY STRIP.
(PAT)>> WE'RE HERE FOR THE OUTLAW STREET CAR REUNION, AND THIS HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER EVERYONE FROM SEVENZERO INDEX CARS ALL THE WAY UP TO OUTLAW PRO MOD AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN, AND THERE ARE SOME HEAVY HITTERS HERE THAT YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD OF LIKE DWAYNE MILLS, MARK MICKEY, AND EVEN EDDIE KRAWIEC, WHO IS USED TO RUNNING ON TWO WHEELS IN NHRA PRO STOCK, AND WE'RE GONNA GO CHECK HIM OUT A LITTLE LATER. SO WE HAVE A LOT TO COVER, LET'S GET TO IT.
(MIKE)>> THIS EVENT FOCUSES ON A FEW DIFFERENT TYPES OF RACING, BUT IT'S CENTERED AROUND THE POPULAR DRAG RADIAL STYLE OF HEADS UP COMPETITION. ALSO IN THE MIX IS THE SUPER COMPETITIVE WORLD OF SPORTSMAN INDEX STYLE RACING, AND ADDED TO THE 2018 SCHEDULE IS NO TIMED GRUDGE RACING AND SOME TWO WHEEL ACTION ON MOTORCYCLES.
(PAT)>> SINCE THE BOYS IN PRO MOD ARE STRAPPED IN AND READY TO HAMMER DOWN LET'S CHECK THEM OUT FIRST. THESE CARS MADE BIG POWER, 3,500 HORSEPOWER AND UP. THERE ARE THREE ENGINE COMBINATION ALLOWED, SUPERCHARGED, TURBO, AND NITROUS. NITROUS CARS DO GET A WEIGHT BREAK AND THEY ARE NOT LIMITED ON CUBIC INCHES.
(MIKE)>> THE NEXT FASTEST CLASS IN TODAY'S LINE UP IS RADIAL VERSUS THE WORLD. THESE CARS ARE BASICALLY PRO MODS RUNNING A SMALLER TIRE. TURBOS, BLOWERS, AND NITROUS POWERED BULLETS PUSH THESE CARS THROUGH THE EIGHTH MILE IN LESS THAT FOUR SECONDS AT WELL OVER 200 MILES AN HOUR. PAT'S WITH ONE OF THE HEAVIEST HITTERS IN THE CLASS, DEWAYNE MILLS.
(PAT)>> WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS TYPE OF RACE?
(DEWAYNE)>> WELL I MEAN THAT'S ALL WE DO IS OUTLAW DRAG RADIAL STUFF. I LIKE IT CAUSE IT USES RBW RULES. WE CAN RUN THE 106 MILLIMETER TURBOS. THEY'VE GOT A WEIGHT FOR EVERY COMBINATION. SO THEY TRY TO KEEP A LITTLE PARITY IN THE CLASS WHERE SOMEBODY JUST DON'T RUN AWAY WITH IT.
(MIKE)>> HERE'S A COOL LITTLE THROW BACK TO A PROJECT PAT AND I DID A FEW YEARS BACK WE CALLED PROJECT "LIME DIME". IT WAS AN S-10 WITH A BIG BLOCK CHEVY AND NITROUS. NOW WE HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH THAT TRUCK. THIS ONE RUNS IN LIMITED DRAG RADIAL AND IS CALLED "THE FLYING PICKLE". WE'LL SEE HOW WELL IT DOES OUT HERE ON THE TRACK IN A FEW MINUTES.
(PAT)>> HERE'S ANOTHER ENTRY IN LIMITED DRAG RADIAL BUT PROBABLY SOMETHING YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. A LEXUS, AND IT'S OWNED BY DANIEL PHARRIS. NOW HE'S BEEN A PLAYER IN THIS GAME FOR A LONG TIME AND HE'S BROUGHT SOMETHING OUT THAT REALLY IS TURNING SOME HEADS. RUMOR HAS IT IT'S GOT A BIG BLOCK WITH TWIN 88'S IN IT, AND IF IT RUNS HALF AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS WELL WE'RE IN FOR A SHOW. DANIEL HAD A BIT OF AN ISSUE IN HIS EARLY QUALIFYING RUN BUT HE WENT ON TO WIN THE LIMITED DRAG RADIAL CLASS SETTING A WORLD RECORD TOP SPEED OF 195.31 MILES PER HOUR ALONG THE WAY. AS FOR MICHAEL ROEMER AND HIS FLYING PICKLE HE POSTED A MODEST 4.867 EARLY IN QUALIFYING, PUTTING HIM IN THE 25TH SLOT, BUT HE FOUGHT HARD FALLING ONLY IN THE THIRD ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS.
(MIKE)>> ALL RIGHT WE HAD TO STOP BY THE PIT OF A LONG TIME RACER, SHANE STACK. HE'S ONE OF THE PIONEERS OF OUTLAW DRAG RACING AND HIS CAR IS ONE OF THE STAPLES OF THE STAPLES OF THE SPORT. NOW THERE'S A REALLY COOL BACK STORY TO THIS WHOLE CAR AND HOW IT'S COME ALONG THROUGH THE YEARS. START IT OUT.
(SHANE)>> MY DAD, WHO'S HERE WITH US THIS WEEKEND, BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW IN '86. THEN I GOT IT WHEN I WAS 16 AND STARTED STREET RACING, BRACKET RACING, SIXZERO HEADS UP RACING, EASY STREET, AND RADIAL VERSUS THE WORLD, AND NOW I'M BACK IN LDR AND IT'S A REALLY GOOD CLASS. HAVE A LOT OF FUN, BEEN RUNNING REALLY WELL AT IT. WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP LAST YEAR. A LOT OF PEOPLE GO THROUGH A LOT OF CARS, HAVE A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT CARS. I'VE HAD THE SAME CAR ALL THOSE YEARS YOU KNOW. SO GET A LOT MORE RECOGNITION WHEN YOU'VE HAD THE SAME CAR. PEOPLE SAY, HEY I'VE SEEN THAT CAR BEFORE 100 YEARS AGO.
(MIKE)>> IN THE FUTURE, SAY FIVE YEARS, WHAT ARE WE GONNA SEE WITH STACK RACING?
(SHANE)>> I'M SURE IT'LL BE WITH THIS CAR, AND WE'LL STILL BE OUT HERE SPENDING MONEY.
(PAT)>> BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND SHANE WAS RUNNER UP TO DANIEL PHARRIS, WHO WON THE LIMITED DRAG RADIAL CLASS IN ADDITION TO RADIAL VERSUS THE WORLD, AND IN THE MID WEST PRO MOD SERIES JERRY HUNT CAPTURED FIRST PLACE WITH A 3.801 ET AT 198.47 MILES PER HOUR.
(NARRATOR)>> UP NEXT, WITH A FEW BODY MODS THE CAMARO AND ITS CHASSIS WILL HAVE A TIGHT FIT. AND LATER, WHAT DOES THIS NHRA CHAMPION DO WHEN HE'S NOT RACING BIKES? HE RACES CARS!
(PAT)>> THERE'S MORE RACING COMING UP BUT FOR RIGHT NOW WE'RE GETTING BACK TO WORK ON THE SPLIT BUMPER. WITH THE CHASSIS WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE WE CAN NOW TAKE A COUPLE OF MEASUREMENTS AND BUILD THE CAPS THAT COVER THE EXPOSED FRAME RAILS THAT ARE INSIDE THE VEHICLE.
(MIKE)>> ALL RIGHT, WE'RE GONNA BEND THE CAP AT THREE AND A QUARTER INCHES WIDE AND DROP IT DOWN THROUGH THE FLOOR ABOUT THREE AND A HALF INCHES. THAT WAY IT'LL LET US TRACE THE FLOOR PAN ON THE SKIRT OF THE CAP AND WE CAN CUT THAT. IT'LL BE THE SAME SHAPE AS THE FLOOR PAN. LET'S GO BEND IT UP.
(PAT)>> WE BORROWED SOME 18 GAUGE STEEL FROM DETROIT MUSCLE'S METAL SUPPLY. WE'LL MAKE OUR MARKS AT SEVEN AND A QUARTER INCHES. GOT IT? THIS IS THE ONLY THING I'M GOOD FOR, BALLAST.
THE SHEAR WILL ENSURE A PERFECT EDGE, AND A STRAIGHT CUT IS MADE. NOW MARK THE CENTER OF THE PIECE ON BOTH ENDS. IT IS THREE AND A HALF INCHES. WITH THE PIECE GOING INTO THE BREAK, WE BEND IT ALL THE WAY TO 90 DEGREES ON BOTH SIDES.
YEP!
OH, THAT'S LOVELY. NOW THE CAP IS CUT TO LENGTH ON OUR NEW TRAJAN 125 BAND SAW FROM SAW BLADE DOT COM. IT'LL CUT ALL TYPES OF METAL UP TO FIVE INCHES. IT ALSO HAS A VARIABLE SPEED MOTOR FOR A VARIETY OF CUTTING, FROM ANGLE IRON TO STAINLESS STEEL. WITH THE CAP IN PLACE, THE CHASSIS ROLLS OUT AGAIN.
(MIKE)>> JUST THINK, THERE'S ONLY MAYBE ONE OR TWO, POSSIBLY TWO MORE TIMES HAVE TO DO THIS.
(PAT)>> I KNOW, I'VE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
(MIKE)>> NOW WE'RE GONNA MAKE A LINE ON THE ACTUAL SKIRT OF THE METAL PIECE THAT FOLLOWS THE FLOOR PAN. THAT WAY WE CAN CUT IT WHEN WE PULL IT BACK OUT AND IT'LL BE A VERY NICE FIT.
TRIMMING THE PIECE WITH EASE IS A MATCO INFINIUM 18 VOLT POWER SHEAR WITH A 4,500 RPM CUTTING SPEED, AND CLEANING UP THE AREAS THE SHEAR COULD NOT GET TO IS A MATCO DIE GRINDER WITH A 36 GRIT ROLL LOCK PAD.
TRIMMED AND BACK IN, IT'S GETTING TRACKED IN PLACE. [ welder crackling ]
(MIKE)>> WRAPPING THIS SIDE UP IS A SMALL PATCH AT THE VERY BACK OF THE CAP.
UNDERNEATH IT'S SPRAYED WITH RUBBERIZED UNDERCOATING, AND UP TOP A NICE BEAD OF SEAM SEALER IS USED. ONCE IT'S DRY, DUPLICOLOR ENAMEL IN CUMMINS BEIGE WILL PROTECT ANYTHING FROM SURFACE RUST. NOW THAT THE CAPS OVER THE FRAME RAILS ARE WELDED IN AND SEAM SEALED WE CAN MOVE ON TO THE BACK AREA OF THE FLOOR PAN WHERE THE UPPER CONTROL ARM MOUNT COMES THROUGH THE FLOOR. NOW THIS MAY LOOK A LITTLE BOXY BUT WE'RE ALSO GONNA USE IT AS THE FOUNDATION FOR THE REAR SEAT DELETE LOWER PANEL. NOW WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND LAY THIS THING IN THE FLOOR, MARK OUR RADIUS OF THE FLOOR PAN, CUT IT OUT, THEN TACK IT ALL IN.
(PAT)>> I'M GONNA MARK THIS OUTSIDE. SO THAT'LL GET YOUR CUT ON THIS OUTSIDE PART.
(MIKE)>> MAKING SURE THE PIECE IS LEVEL SIDE TO SIDE AND FRONT TO BACK, WE'LL MARK THE RADIUS OF THE FLOOR PAN.
(PAT)>> NICE HUSTLE!
(MIKE)>> JUST LIKE THE OTHER PIECE, A FINAL TOUCH UP WITH ENSURE A GOOD FIT. [ grinder spinning ]
[ welder crackling ]
(MIKE)>> NOW IT'S TACKED IN, GOING WITH HALF INCH SPACING ALL THE WAY AROUND TO AVOID WARPAGE. ALL RIGHT, NOW I'M GONNA USE AN EMPTY BOTTLE OF ARGON TO SHAPE THE ACTUAL PLATE THAT WE'RE GONNA BE PUTTING IN THE CAR. NOW THE RADIUS OF THE BOTTLE IS REAL CLOSE TO EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR TO COVER UP THAT BOX SECTION WE JUST PUT IN. YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE PLATE IS STRAIGHT WITH THE BOTTLE. SO WE'LL USE THE PAINTED LINE FROM THE BOTTLE COMPANY.
LET'S GO TAKE A LOOK.
THE BEND LOOKS GOOD, AND WITH THE MARK MADE WE CAN CUT IT TO LENGTH.
THIS PIECE IS TACKED THE SAME WAY. FINALLY WE NEED TO MAKE TWO SIDE CAPS AND A QUICK MARK IS ALL WE NEED TO CONTINUE.
(PAT)>> ALL RIGHT! [ saw cutting metal ]
(MIKE)>> NOW THE NIBBLER WILL DO THAT TO A PIECE OF METAL BUT IT'S AN EASY FIX.
READY TO GO! [ welder crackling ]
(MIKE)>> MORE SEAM SEALER IS USED HERE. USE A WET FINGER TO SMOOTH IT ALL OUT. A LITTLE MORE DUPLICOLOR FOR PROTECTION AND A FEW SHOTS OF UNDERCOATING MAKE THIS A FINISHED JOB.
(NARRATOR)>> WHETHER ON TWO WHEELS OR FOUR, EDDIE KRAWIEC HAS RACING IN HIS BLOOD!
(PAT)>> WELCOME BACK TO ENGINE POWER. WE'RE AT THE OUTLAW STREET CAR REUNION IN BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY, CHECKING OUT A WIDE VARIETY OF DRAG RACING. FROM INSANELY POWERFUL PRO MODS, TO PRO STREET MOTORCYCLES, AND X-275 DRAG RADIAL MACHINES. WE CAUGHT UP WITH ONE X-275 RACER WHO'S BETTER KNOWN FOR HIS PERFORMANCE ON TWO WHEELS. I'M HERE WITH FOUR TIME NHRA PRO STOCK BIKE CHAMPION EDDIE KRAWIEC. NOW ONLY DOES HE LOVE A HIGH PERFORMANCE BIKE BUT HE'S ALSO A CAR GUY, AND HE'S GOT A REALLY COOL CAR THAT HE RUNS. EDDIE TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CAR, AND HOW LONG YOU'VE HAD IT, AND A LITTLE BIT ABOUT IT.
(EDDIE)>> WELL IT'S A 2000 CAMARO BUILT BY DMC RACING UP IN MASSACHUSETTS. IT RUNS A 440 CUBIC INCH LS. IT'S GOT AN 85 MILLIMETER TURBO ON THE FRONT, AND WELL HOPEFULLY COVERS THE EIGHTH MILE IN ROUGHLY 4.4 SECONDS AT SOMEWHERE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF 160 MILES AN HOUR. NOT QUITE AS FAST AS THE MOTORCYCLE, BUT IT SURE IS A LOT OF FUN.
(PAT)>> SO THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. THIS IS KIND OF LIKE A, I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS LIKE VACATION TO YOU, BUT I KNOW THIS IS FUN CAUSE YOU DON'T GET TO DO THIS THAT OFTEN.
(EDDIE)>> WELL THE WAY I EXPLAIN IT IS I'M REALLY DUMB BECAUSE SEE, MY FULL TIME JOB IS A RACER, AND I'M A RACER, AND THEN I BUILT A CAR THAT WHEN I'M OFF FROM RACING I'M RACING. SO I'M JUST A TRUE RACER AT HEART. I LOVE THIS, I LOVE COMING OUT HERE. MY PASSION IS WITH THE MOTORCYCLES BUT MY ENJOYMENT IS WHAT WE DO IN THE OUTLAW STUFF BECAUSE THESE CARS HAVE SO MUCH TECHNOLOGY AND SO UNLIMITED ON WHAT YOU CAN DO. IT MAKES IT SO GOOD BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE RACING IN A SANCTIONING BODY WITH RULES, WELL YOU HAVE RULES. THIS, OUTLAW RACING, THERE AREN'T A WHOLE LOT OF RULES. YOU GET A TIRE, YOU GET A TURBO SIZE, HAVE AT IT. SO IT'S DEFINITELY ENJOYABLE TO COME OUT HERE AND PLAY.
(PAT)>> ONE THING I'D LIKE TO ASK YOU. ROLLING UP TO THE LINE IN THIS THING VERSUS THE BIKE, THE DIFFERENCE IN THE FEELING OF IT. WHAT IS THAT LIKE?
(EDDIE)>> WELL THE BIT THING WITH THIS IS, FOR ME, I HAVE A ROLL CAGE AROUND ME. IT SOUNDS CRAZY BUT I DON'T FEEL A SAFE IN THIS AS I DO ON MY MOTORCYCLE, BUT I GUESS THAT'S JUST WHY I HAVE A FEW SCREWS LOOSE AND I'M PROBABLY KNOWN AS A KNUCKLE HEAD TO MOST PEOPLE THAT GET ON A MOTORCYCLE AND TRY TO GO 200 MILES AN HOUR. I JUST ENJOY WHAT I DO AND I LOVE IT.
(PAT)>> AND IF YOU LOVE DRAG RACING TOO, MAKE PLANS TO VISIT THE NEXT OUTLAW STREETCAR REUNION.
(MIKE)>> A CAR OR A TRUCK IS A BIG INVESTMENT, AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF IT'S THE PAINT OR THE SEATS, PROTECTION IS NEEDED. THESE COVERCRAFT CARHARTT SEAT SAVERS WILL DO JUST THAT. THEY'RE MADE FROM CARHARTT'S DUCK WEAVE FABRIC AND COME TRIPLE STITCHED ON THE MAIN SEAMS. THEY'RE TOUGH AS NAILS, EASY TO INSTALL, AND COME IN SIX DIFFERENT COLORS. YOU CAN ORDER THEM FOR THE FRONT, MIDDLE, OR REAR SEATING ROWS DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU DRIVE AND YOU CAN SURELY EXPECT A PERFECT FIT. NOW ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS TAKE A MINUTE AND LOG ON TO COVERCRAFT DOT COM TO SEE WHAT THEY OFFER FOR YOUR RIDE.
(PAT)>> IF YOU HAVE A VEHICLE THAT HAS A CVT, OR CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION, AND IT'S IN NEED OF A LITTLE TLC BARS LEAKS' CVT TRANSMISSION FIX IS A SYNTHETIC BLEND TREATMENT THAT HELPS STOP BELT SLIPPAGE, REDUCE NOISE, AND CONDITION SEALS TO HELP STOP LEAKS. IT CONTAINS SPECIAL ANTIWEAR AND EXTREME PRESSURE AGENTS TO PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR BOTH PUSH DRIVE BELT AND CHAIN DRIVEN CVT APPLICATIONS. BEST OF ALL YOU CAN POUR IT RIGHT DOWN THE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK TUBE AND ONE BOTTLE TREATS SIX TO 10 QUARTS. PICK UP SOME FOR YOUR RIDE AT YOUR FAVORITE AUTO PARTS HOUSE.
(NARRATOR)>> UP NEXT, THE TRIPLE THREAT CAMARO RECEIVES A RACE READY FUEL CELL.
(MIKE)>> HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE RACING ACTION. NOW IT'S TIME FOR US TO MOVE TO THE BACK OF THE CAR AND START INSTALLING THE FUEL CELL. ORIGINALLY WE WERE GONNA PUT A STOCK STYLE TANK BACK IN, BUT WE NEED THE REAL ESTATE UNDER THE TRUNK PAN FOR SOME OTHER ITEMS.
(PAT)>> THE CELL IS A SUMMIT RACING BRAND AND HAS A 17 GALLON CAPACITY. IT'S CONSTRUCTED OUT OF 50-51 AIRCRAFT ALUMINUM ALLOY FOR SUPERIOR STRENGTH IN A LIGHTWEIGHT PACKAGE. ALL OF THE SEAMS ARE TIG WELDED AND IT COMES IN A NATURAL FINISH LIKE THIS ONE, OR YOU CAN EVEN GET IT POWDER COATED IN RED, BLACK, OR BLUE. DASH EIGHT AN FITTINGS ARE USED ON THE PICK UP, RETURN, AND VENT, AND TO WORK WITH A STOCK FUEL GAUGE WE ORDERED THIS ONE WITH A ZERO TO 90 OHM GM SENDING UNIT. THE VENT ALSO DOUBLES AS A SAFETY FEATURE. IN THE EVENT OF A ROLL OVER THERE IS A CHECK BALL THAT'S INSIDE THAT SEALS THE FITTING, PREVENTING FUEL SPILL.
(MIKE)>> THE TRUNK PAN IS SUPER STRONG AND SOLID. SO WE'RE GONNA MOUNT THE CELL DIRECTLY TO IT. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THERE'S NO MOUNTING TABS ON THE TANK ITSELF. SO WE MADE THESE OUT OF SOME ALUMINUM SHEET AND ALL WE NEED TO DO IS TIG WELD THEM ON. [ welder crackling ]
(MIKE)>> THEY ARE TIG WELDED IN PLACE MAKING SURE A LARGE AREA OF THE TAB OVERLAYS THE TANK. EACH TAB IS PREPPED TO ENSURE A GOOD, CLEAN WELD. ONCE LAID IN PLACE I'M PREHEATING THE THINNER MATERIAL, WHICH IS THE TANK, SO WE AVOID ANY WELD CRACKING.
(PAT)>> VOLTAGE IS CONTROLLED VIA THE FOOT PEDAL. JUST DON'T WELD THE TWO TOGETHER. MAKE SURE TO USE FILLER ROD TO ENSURE A STRONG WELD IS ACHIEVED. EVERYWHERE THERE IS A JOINT IT'S GETTING WELDED. WE DON'T WANT ANY FLEX AT THESE POINTS. THIS TOP WELD IS THE FINAL BEAD FOR THIS TAB.
WITH ALL THE TABS WELDED ON WE CAN LAY THE CELL IN PLACE AND MARK THE HOLES THAT WILL BE DRILLED.
USING A MATCO CORDLESS DRILL AND AN EIGHTH INCH BIT, A PILOT IS MADE AT EVERY MARK. THEN A UNIBIT IS USED TO OPEN UP THE HOLES. [ drill spinning ]
(PAT)>> ARP BOLTS ARE PLACED INTO THE TABS AND UNDERNEATH THE TRUNK PAN. LARGE WASHERS, LOCK WASHERS, AND THE NUTS ARE PUT IN PLACE. FINALLY THE TIGHTENING HAPPENS AND OUR CELL IS LOCKED IN PLACE. [ drill spinning ]
(PAT)>> WE'VE GOT A TON OF WORK DONE ON "THE SPLIT BUMPER THUMPER" BUT THERE'S ALSO A TON MORE TO DO. LIKE ANY OTHER PROJECT OF THIS MAGNITUDE, THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS.
(MIKE)>> NOW THIS IS A REALLY BIG BUILD, AND WE APPRECIATE HOW MUCH YOU GUYS ARE FOLLOWING ALONG, KEEP IT UP. NOW IF YOU WANT TO FIND ANYMORE INFORMATION ON THE PRODUCTS WE USED IN TODAY'S SHOWS OR THE TOOLS, LOG ON TO POWERNATION TV DOT COM.
(PAT)>> ON TODAY'S POWERNATION EXTRA WE'RE GONNA GIVE YOU A LITTLE BEHIND THE SCENES ON EVERY ENGINE THAT WE DO HERE. PARTS VERIFICATION IS A MUST, WHETHER YOU'RE BUILDING SOMETHING MILD OR WILD. WE VERIFY THAT PARTS ARE CORRECT AND FIT PROPERLY BEFORE HAND ON EVERYTHING THAT WE DO HERE.
(MIKE)>> THE PROCEDURE WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU TODAY HAS TO DO WITH INSTALLING A NEW CAM SHAFT IN AN OLD PROJECT. NOW THE FIRST WE DO IS VERIFY THAT THE CAM SHAFT SPECS ARE WHAT THE CAM CARD SAYS THEY ARE. NOW WE DO THAT BY MEASURING IT OURSELVES. NOW WITH THE DEGREE WHEEL ON AND TRUE TDC SET, HERE'S A LOOK AT HOW TO TAKE A COUPLE OF MEASUREMENTS. FIRST UP WE WILL SEE WHERE THE INTAKE CENTER LINE FALLS. THAT IS DONE BY DEGREEING THE CAM. WE'LL TAKE THE NUMBERS 50 THOUSANDTHS BEFORE AND 50 THOUSANDTHS AFTER PEAK LOBE LIFT ON THE INTAKE SIDE. THEN ADD THOSE TWO NUMBERS TOGETHER AND DIVIDE THEM BY TWO. THE INTAKE CENTER LINE FOR THIS ENGINE IS 106 AND A HALF, WHICH IS THREE AND A HALF DEGREES ADVANCED. NOW THAT THE CAM IS DEGREED WE'RE GOING TO COMPARE ACTUAL LOBE LIFT TO WHAT THE CAM CARD SAYS. THIS CAN VARY A FEW THOUSANDTHS FROM THE CARD BUT IT'S NOT A BIG CONCERN.
(PAT)>> THIS IS CHECKED BY SIMPLY PUTTING A DIAL INDICATOR ON THE PUSH ROD AND MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF TRAVEL FROM THE LOBE'S BASE CIRCLE TO ITS PEAK LIFT. THE CARD STATED 375 THOUSANDTHS AND WE'RE MEASURING 375 THOUSANDTHS. SO THE CARD IS ACCURATE.
(MIKE)>> NOW ON TO THE NEXT MEASUREMENT, WHICH IS LIFT AT THE VALVE. THIS IS DONE BY INSTALLING THE NEW ROCKER ARMS FOR MOCK UP. THE INDICATOR IS MOVED TO THE RETAINER, AND THE ENGINE IS TURNED OVER UNTIL PEAK LIFT IS REACHED. LOBE LIFT MULTIPLIED BY THE ROCKER RATIO IS THE AMOUNT OF LIFT AT THE VALVE.
(PAT)>> CHANGING ROCKER RATIOS WILL INCREASE LIFT, BUT BE AWARE THIS COULD ALSO CAUSE INTERFERENCE ISSUES DEPENDING ON YOUR COMPONENTS. CHECK IT CAREFULLY. FOR EXAMPLE, HERE'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ONE POINT SEVEN AND ONE POINT SIX ROCKER. IT'S 37 THOUSANDTHS.
(MIKE)>> THIS CAM SHAFT'S LOBE SEPARATION ANGLE IS 110 DEGREES. WE HAVE IT INSTALLED AT 106 AND A HALF LIKE WE MENTIONED EARLIER. THAT MAKES IT THREE AND A HALF DEGREES ADVANCED. HERE'S A QUICK LOOK AT WHAT RETARDING OR ADVANCING THE CAM SHAFT IN YOUR ENGINE WILL ACTUALLY DO. RETARDING THE CAM LETS VALVE EVENTS HAPPEN LATER IN REGARDS TO THE CRANK SHAFT POSITION. THIS ALLOWS THE ENGINE TO MAKE MAXIMUM POWER HIGHER IN THE RPM RANGE WHILE SACRIFICING A SMALL AMOUNT OF LOWER RPM POWER AND TORQUE. ADVANCING THE CAM ALLOWS THE VALVE EVENTS TO HAPPEN SOONER IN REGARDS TO CRANK SHAFT POSITION, TRAPPING AIR SOONER IN THE CYLINDER ALLOWING MAXIMUM POWER AT LOWER ENGINE SPEEDS.
(PAT)>> NOW OBVIOUSLY THERE ARE MORE THINGS TO GET CHECKED AND MEASURED, BUT THIS GIVES YOU A LITTLE INCITE ON WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN BEFORE WE BUILD AN ENGINE.
Show Full Transcript
(MIKE)>> WE SNUCK OUT OF THE SHOP AND HEADED NORTH TO ONE OF OUR FAVORITE LITTLE TOWNS. A PLACE VERY RICH IN MOTORSPORTS HISTORY, BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY, AND WE'RE HERE AT BEECH BEND RACEWAY PARK TO WATCH SOME OF THE FASTEST SMALL TIRES IN THE WORLD GO DOWN THIS LEGENDARY STRIP.
