WE USE TURBO SMART VPORT PROS. BASICALLY WHAT THE BYPASS VALVE DOES IS WHEN YOU LIFT ON THE GAS THE VALVES OPEN AND LET OFF ANY PRESSURE THAT'S BUILT UP IN THE PIPES. (JON)>> THIS IS OUR MANIFOLD. THIS IS THE DRIVER'S SIDE MANIFOLD FOR THE NEW CAMARO KIT. PACKAGES NICELY, INSTALLS EASILY. WE USE BILLET FLANGES, THE TURBO MOUNTS HERE, AND THE WASTE GATE MOUNTS UP HERE.
(MIKE)>> NICE LOOKING PIECE, THERE ARE TWO OF THEM?
(JON)>> THERE ARE TWO. BASICALLY WE USE STAINLESS STEEL FOR ALL OF OUR PIPING INCLUDING CHARGE PIPING FOR DURABILITY. WE WERE ABLE TO USE THE LARGEST PIPING POSSIBLE. WE CAN MAKE OVER 1,200 BUT AT THE SAME TIME EVERYTHING FITS PERFECTLY. FOR THIS KIT WE CONTROL THE BOOST WITH A 40 MILLIMETER PRECISION WASTE GATE. IT USES A VBAND INLET, VBAND OUTLET, AND YOU CAN CHANGE THE SPRINGS ON THE INSIDE OF THE CAP TO DECIDE WHAT FINAL BOOST YOU WANT TO SEE. WELL WE SEND ALL THIS EXCITING STUFF BUT HERE'S THE FUN PART, TWIN 62 MILLIMETER PRECISION TURBOS, BILLET, GEN TWO COMPRESSOR WHEEL, STAINLESS VBAND HOUSING WITH A VBAND INLET, THREE INCH OUTLET. THESE TWO ARE CAPABLE OF OVER 1,200 HORSEPOWER. THERE'S ONLY ONE KIT TO BUY AND THIS IS THE ONE.
(MIKE)>> NO EXCEPTIONS, THE VERY FIRST STEP IS TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TERMINALS FROM THE BATTERY. SECOND THE ENTIRE AIR BOX ASSEMBLY CAN BE REMOVED. HOYT DUTTON HAS BEEN HERE BEFORE WITH THE HELLION TEAM. HE'S A PRO AT INSTALLING TURBO SYSTEMS AND WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE HIM BACK. AFTER SEVERAL FASTENERS AND PUSH PINS WERE REMOVED, THE ENTIRE FRONT FASCIA CAN COME OFF. NOW THE FACTORY PLASTIC AIR DAMS CAN BE REMOVED. THEY ARE ALL HELD IN WITH PLASTIC PUSH PINS.
(PAT)>> THE COOLANT IS REMOVED AND STORED FOR REUSE. REMOVE THE LEADS TO THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX AND REMOVE THE BOX FOR A MODIFICATION LATER ON. NOW THE BASE OF THE BOX CAN BE LOOSENED AND THE CONNECTORS DETACHED. THE SMALL OVERFLOW COOLANT HOSE ASSEMBLY IS REMOVED ALONG WITH THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE. NOW THE EXPANSION TANK IS REMOVED FOR RELOCATION LATER ON. A FEW PUSH MOUNT CABLE TIES ARE REMOVED AND THE HARNESS AND LEADS ARE PUSHED OUT OF THE WAY. NOW THE CONNECTORS ARE REMOVED FROM THE ECM, AND IT IS REMOVED FOR RELOCATION LATER ON. THE ECU BRACKET ALSO COMES OUT. UNCLIP THE FUEL LINE FROM THE ENGINE COVER AND REMOVE THE COIL COVERS. SAME GOES FOR THE WIRES, BUT YOU STAY WITH US. THERE'S MORE TO COME!
(MIKE)>> WE'RE BACK WITH HELLION'S TWIN TURBO INSTALL ON THIS 2017 SS CAMARO. NOW THE NEXT STEP IS SEPARATING THE MANIFOLDS FROM THE CAT PIPES. [ drill spinning ]
(MIKE)>> NOW REMOVE THE MANIFOLDS FROM UP TOP. THEY DO NOT GET REUSED. WITH THE ECU RELOCATED WITH THE SUPPLIED BRACKET, THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE IS INSTALLED. AFTER TIGHTENING THE HOSE, THE FUSE BOX IS REINSTALLED AND RELOCATED WITH THE HELLION SUPPLIED BRACKET SETUP. THE FACTORY HARNESS GOES BACK INTO PLACE. NOW THERE'S A LOT MORE ROOM ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ENGINES TO TACKLE THE NEXT STEP, WHICH INCLUDES SWAPPING OUT THE SPARK PLUGS AND MOVING THE COIL PACKS. NOW THE PLUGS ARE INCLUDED IN THE KIT AND HAVE TO BE GAPPED FAIRLY TIGHT, 22 THOUSANDTHS TO BE EXACT. THEY'RE ALSO ONE HEAT RANGE COOLER. THE FACTORY ONE BAR MAP SENSOR IS REPLACED WITH A THREE BAR. BOOST ADDS ARTIFICIAL ATMOSPHERE TO THE INTAKE TRACK. SO THE THREE BAR IS NEEDED TO READ THE HIGHER PRESSURE. ALL EIGHT OF THE COIL PACKS ARE UNBOLTED AND REPOSITIONED TO CLEAR THE DOWN PIPES. THEY BASICALLY MOVE UP A COUPLE OF INCHES. THE DEI HEAT PRODUCTS GO INTO PLAY NOW. THEY PROTECT SEVERAL HARNESS, THE A/C LINE, AND SOME HOSES.
(PAT)>> THE TURBOS IN THIS KIT ARE LUBRICATED BY ENGINE OIL. SO A RETURN, OR DRAIN, LINE FROM THEM TO THE PAN IS REQUIRED, AND THAT MEANS PUTTING A COUPLE OF HOLES IN THE PAN AND INSTALLING THESE FITTINGS. HELLION'S SCIENCED OUT METHOD FOR THIS IS THEY PROVIDE A CUSTOM PRECISION ROTOBIT AND IT MAKES THE JOB PRETTY MUCH FOOL PROOF. USING THE ROTOBIT, TWO HOLES ARE EASILY PUT IN THE PAN. FINALLY WITH THREAD SEALANT ON THE FITTINGS, THEY ARE INSTALLED IN THE NEWLY THREADED HOLES.
(MIKE)>> THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOWN PIPE ASSEMBLY USES A SLIP FIT CONNECTION. NOW MAKING SURE THAT'S SEALED UP WHEN THE CLAMP IS TIGHTENED IS CRITICAL. NOW THIS IS A HIGH HEAT AREA. SO THE RIGHT PRODUCT HAS TO BE USED. SO WE PICKED UP PERMATEX OPTIMUM GRAY HIGH TEMP GASKET MAKER. IT'S FORMULATED FOR ASSEMBLIES WHERE HIGH TEMPERATURE AND HIGH VIBRATIONS ARE PRESENT. IT HAS A 700 DEGREE RATING, AND IS SENSOR SAFE. NOW IT CAN BE USED ON VALVE COVERS, TRANNY PANS, TIMING COVERS, AND SLIP FIT EXHAUST CONNECTIONS LIKE WE'RE USING IT FOR. THE DOWN PIPES TIE INTO THE FACTORY EXHAUST. DRIVER'S SIDE DOWN PIPE THREE IS PUT IN PLACE ON TOP OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FLANGE. HELLION'S TURBO HEADER GOES IN NEXT. THE QUALITY AND FITMENT GOES TO SHOW THEY TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK. THE FACTORY FASTENERS TIGHTEN IT DOWN. NOW DOWN PIPE TWO IS SLID IN BEHIND THE HEADER AND MATED TO PIPE THREE. THIS IS WHERE THE OPTIMUM GRAY COMES INTO PLAY. THE SUPPLIED PLUG WIRES GO IN NEXT. THEY ROUTE FROM UNDERNEATH THE HEADER AND UP TO THE COIL PACKS. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. FOUR FASTENERS SECURE IT. THERE ARE ALSO A COUPLE OF CONNECTORS THAT HAVE TO BE UNPLUGGED. ALL THE PLASTIC SURROUNDING THE RADIATOR REMOVED AS WELL. THEY ARE ALL HELD IN WITH PUSH PINS. THIS COOLER IS UNBOLTED AND SWUNG OUT OF THE WAY FOR NOW. TWO SUPPORT BRACKETS ARE REMOVED FROM THE BUMPER TO CORE SUPPORT, AND EIGHT FASTENERS LET THE BUMPER SEPARATE FROM THE CAR.
(PAT)>> THOSE PRECISION TURBOS COMPRESS THE INCOMING AIR AND BUILD SOME BOOST, BUT THE BYPRODUCT OF THAT PROCESS IS THAT SAME AIR GETS HEATED UP, REDUCING THE EFFICIENCY OF POWER PRODUCTION. TO COOL THE INCOMING AIR AND TO MAXIMIZE HORSEPOWER A LARGE AIR TO AIR INTERCOOLER IS USED. THIS ONE WAS CUSTOM BUILT TO HELLION'S SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES A THREE AND A HALF INCH THICK CORE, A RELOCATED SPOT FOR THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, AND BILLET HOSE CONNECTIONS FOR THE OUTLET AND THE INLETS. NOW IT FITS NEATLY IN THE FRONT OF THE CAMARO WITH THE SUPPLIED BRACKETRY. NOW THIS IS THE SAME INTERCOOLER THAT IS USED ON APPLICATIONS THAT MAKE OVER 1,200 HORSEPOWER. SO IT'S PLENTY BIG ENOUGH FOR OUR LT ONE CAMARO. INSTALLING THE COOLER IS A TWO PERSON JOB. THE COOLER BRACKETS GET SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND FRONT SUBFRAME HORNS. THE FACTORY FASTENERS SECURE IT ALL BACK IN PLACE. THE PARADE OF NEW PARTS CONTINUES AFTER THE BREAK.
(MIKE)>> WE'RE BACK WITH THE HELLION POWER SYSTEMS TWIN TURBO CAMARO. NOW HOYT MADE A LITTLE PROGRESS DURING THE BREAK BY INSTALLING SOME OF THE COUPLERS ONTO THE INTERCOOLER. NOW JUST AN FYI, THESE ARE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR HELLION. THEY'RE A FOUR PLY DESIGN THAT CAN HANDLE HIGH TEMPERATURES, AND THEY'VE EVEN BEEN USED ON CARS THAT MAKE WELL OVER 50 POUNDS OF BOOST. THE PIPE THAT HOUSES THE BLOW OFF VALVE GOES IN NEXT. IT GOES FROM THE COOLER UP TOWARDS THE TURBO. THE BLOW OFF VALVE IS SECURED WITH A VBAND AND CONTROLLED BY A VACUUM LINE. IT IS VISIBLE THROUGH THE FRONT FASCIA AFTER IT GOES BACK ON. NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE BOOST PRODUCERS. PRECISION 62 MILLIMETER BALL BEARING TURBOS TO BE EXACT. LIKE JON MENTIONED EARLIER, THEY ARE SECURED BY VBAND CLAMPS FOR A LEAK PROOF SEAL. WE LOVE THE MOUNTING LOCATION. AS SOON AS THE HOOD IS RAISED YOU WILL GET A FACE FULL OF AWESOMENESS.
(PAT)>> NOW DOWN PIPE ONE IS INSTALLED. THIS MAKES THE FINAL CONNECTION FROM THE TURBO TO THE EXHAUST. THE WASTE GATE ATTACHES TO THE HEADER NOW, AND A SMALL PIPE CONNECTS IT TO THE DOWN PIPE. THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX HAS BEEN RELOCATED, AND WITH A SWING OF THIS LEVER IT IS COMPLETE. ALSO RELOCATED IS THE FACTORY COOLANT TANK. IT RESTS ON A SUPPLIED BRACKET AND A COMBINATION OF THE ORIGINAL AND NEW LINES ATTACH TO IT. THE FINAL PIPE TO GO ON IS THE CHARGE PIPE. THIS COMES FROM THE SINGLE OUTLET OF THE INTERCOOLER AND CONNECTS TO THE THROTTLE BODY. FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL HEAT PROTECTION WE'RE INSTALLING THESE TRICK TURBO SHIELDS FROM DEI. THEY REDUCE TURBO LAG BY KEEPING MORE HEAT IN THE EXHAUST HOUSING. SAFETY WIRE IS SUPPLIED TO WRAP AROUND THE RIVETED ANCHORS. THEY ALSO SERVE AS A GREAT HEAD BARRIER TO PROTECT UNDER HOOD COMPONENTS.
(MIKE)>> WITH THE EXTREME PERFORMANCE WE EXPECT OUT OF THIS CAMARO A MAGNAFLOW THREE INCH CAT BACK IS GOING ON, STARTING WITH THIS XPIPE. THE MUFFLERS ARE FOUR, BY NINE, BY 11 IN DIAMETER. THEY ARE CONSTRUCTED OF STAINLESS STEEL AND HAVE FOUR INCH POLISHED TIPS. THEY RETAIN THE FACTORY EXHAUST VALVE CONTROL MOTORS.

THE TURBO COVERS ARE SEASONED NOW. SO NO MORE SMOKE FROM THEM. ALL IN ALL THIS KILLER SETUP IS COMING TOGETHER IN AN AWESOME WAY.

INEVITABLY IN ANY ENGINE CONVERSATION I HAVE WITH A HOT RODDER THE SUBJECT ALWAYS COMES UP OF HOW MUCH POWER DOES YOUR BULLET MAKE AND WHETHER IT'S BEEN ON AN ENGINE DYNO OR A CHASSIS DYNO. EITHER WAY I LOVE HEARING THE ANSWER AND THAT ANSWER IS ALWAYS GIVEN TO ME IN PEAK NUMBERS FOR BOTH HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE. WHEN BUILDING ENGINES FOR TRUE RACING APPLICATIONS THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE TO CONSIDER, AVERAGE POWER. PEAK NUMBERS ARE GREAT FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS BUT THE AVERAGE POWER OVER YOUR OPERATING RANGE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT, PERHAPS EVEN MORE SO. MAKING MORE AVERAGE HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE WILL RUN FASTER THAN SOMETHING THAT GOES UP FAST AND FALLS OFF EVEN FASTER IN THAT SAME RANGE. DYNO TESTING IS ESSENTIAL FOR FINDING THIS OUT. AN ENGINE OR CHASSIS DYNO PRODUCES A GRAPH AND NUMERICAL INFORMATION TO SHOW WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR OPERATING RANGE. I'VE DRAWN A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES ON MY TRUSTY WHITE BOARD TO SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN. BOTH OF THESE ENGINES OPERATE IN THE SAME RANGE AND THEY MAKE THE SAME PEAK NUMBERS. THE TOP GRAPH SHOWS A CURVE THAT'S MORE ABRUPT WITH POWER RISING FAST BUT FALLING OFF HARD AFTER PEAK. THE LOWER GRAPH HAS A SMOOTHER CURVE EVERYWHERE HOLDING POWER NUMBERS FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS WHAT'S CALLED AREA UNDER THE CURVE. THE DATA LOOKED AT BETWEEN THESE TWO POINTS, WHICH IS THE OPERATING RANGE, ARE ADDED UP AND DIVIDED BY THE RANGE, AND THAT GIVES YOU AN AVERAGE. BOTH HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE NUMBERS ARE CALCULATED. THE HIGHER AVERAGE NUMBER BETWEEN THE TWO GRAPHS IS THE BOTTOM ONE, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY PRODUCE THE SAME PEAK NUMBERS THE HIGHER AVERAGE POWER GRAPH WILL RUN FASTER DOWN THE TRACK GIVEN EVERYTHING IS SETUP CORRECTLY IN THE CAR. THAT'S BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS PRODUCING MORE POWER AT ANY GIVEN POINT IN THE OPERATING RANGE. ANOTHER THING TO NOTE ON A DYNO GRAPH IS WHERE THE LINES CROSS, WHICH IS 5,252 RPM. WHY, BECAUSE HORSEPOWER IS CALCULATED FROM MEASURED TORQUE TIMES THE RPM DIVIDED BY 5,252. NOW IF YOU LOOK AT A GRAPH WHERE THE NUMBERS DON'T CROSS THERE, THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE SOMETHING GOOFY GOING ON, AND I WOULD QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF THE GRAPH YOU'RE LOOKING AT. SO WHAT CAN WE TAKE AWAY FROM ALL OF THIS INFORMATION? WELL MORE AREA UNDER THE CURVE, OR IN THIS CASE MORE POWER IN YOUR OPERATING ON AN AVERAGE, WILL ABSOLUTELY RUN FASTER IF EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE CAR IS RIGHT. IT USES A VBAND INLET, VBAND OUTLET, AND YOU CAN CHANGE THE SPRINGS ON THE INSIDE OF THE CAP TO DECIDE WHAT FINAL BOOST YOU WANT TO SEE. (PAT)>> THE COOLANT IS REMOVED AND STORED FOR REUSE. REMOVE THE LEADS TO THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX AND REMOVE THE BOX FOR A MODIFICATION LATER ON. NOW THE BASE OF THE BOX CAN BE LOOSENED AND THE CONNECTORS DETACHED. THE SMALL OVERFLOW COOLANT HOSE ASSEMBLY IS REMOVED ALONG WITH THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE. NOW THE EXPANSION TANK IS REMOVED FOR RELOCATION LATER ON. A FEW PUSH MOUNT CABLE TIES ARE REMOVED AND THE HARNESS AND LEADS ARE PUSHED OUT OF THE WAY. NOW THE CONNECTORS ARE REMOVED FROM THE ECM, AND IT IS REMOVED FOR RELOCATION LATER ON. THE ECU BRACKET ALSO COMES OUT. UNCLIP THE FUEL LINE FROM THE ENGINE COVER AND REMOVE THE COIL COVERS. SAME GOES FOR THE WIRES, BUT YOU STAY WITH US. THERE'S MORE TO COME!

(MIKE)>> NOW REMOVE THE MANIFOLDS FROM UP TOP. THEY DO NOT GET REUSED. WITH THE ECU RELOCATED WITH THE SUPPLIED BRACKET, THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE IS INSTALLED. AFTER TIGHTENING THE HOSE, THE FUSE BOX IS REINSTALLED AND RELOCATED WITH THE HELLION SUPPLIED BRACKET SETUP. THE FACTORY HARNESS GOES BACK INTO PLACE. NOW THERE'S A LOT MORE ROOM ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ENGINES TO TACKLE THE NEXT STEP, WHICH INCLUDES SWAPPING OUT THE SPARK PLUGS AND MOVING THE COIL PACKS. NOW THE PLUGS ARE INCLUDED IN THE KIT AND HAVE TO BE GAPPED FAIRLY TIGHT, 22 THOUSANDTHS TO BE EXACT. THEY'RE ALSO ONE HEAT RANGE COOLER. THE FACTORY ONE BAR MAP SENSOR IS REPLACED WITH A THREE BAR. BOOST ADDS ARTIFICIAL ATMOSPHERE TO THE INTAKE TRACK. SO THE THREE BAR IS NEEDED TO READ THE HIGHER PRESSURE. ALL EIGHT OF THE COIL PACKS ARE UNBOLTED AND REPOSITIONED TO CLEAR THE DOWN PIPES. THEY BASICALLY MOVE UP A COUPLE OF INCHES. THE DEI HEAT PRODUCTS GO INTO PLAY NOW. THEY PROTECT SEVERAL HARNESS, THE A/C LINE, AND SOME HOSES.
(PAT)>> THE TURBOS IN THIS KIT ARE LUBRICATED BY ENGINE OIL. SO A RETURN, OR DRAIN, LINE FROM THEM TO THE PAN IS REQUIRED, AND THAT MEANS PUTTING A COUPLE OF HOLES IN THE PAN AND INSTALLING THESE FITTINGS. HELLION'S SCIENCED OUT METHOD FOR THIS IS THEY PROVIDE A CUSTOM PRECISION ROTOBIT AND IT MAKES THE JOB PRETTY MUCH FOOL PROOF. USING THE ROTOBIT, TWO HOLES ARE EASILY PUT IN THE PAN. FINALLY WITH THREAD SEALANT ON THE FITTINGS, THEY ARE INSTALLED IN THE NEWLY THREADED HOLES.
(MIKE)>> THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOWN PIPE ASSEMBLY USES A SLIP FIT CONNECTION. NOW MAKING SURE THAT'S SEALED UP WHEN THE CLAMP IS TIGHTENED IS CRITICAL. NOW THIS IS A HIGH HEAT AREA. SO THE RIGHT PRODUCT HAS TO BE USED. SO WE PICKED UP PERMATEX OPTIMUM GRAY HIGH TEMP GASKET MAKER. IT'S FORMULATED FOR ASSEMBLIES WHERE HIGH TEMPERATURE AND HIGH VIBRATIONS ARE PRESENT. IT HAS A 700 DEGREE RATING, AND IS SENSOR SAFE. NOW IT CAN BE USED ON VALVE COVERS, TRANNY PANS, TIMING COVERS, AND SLIP FIT EXHAUST CONNECTIONS LIKE WE'RE USING IT FOR. THE DOWN PIPES TIE INTO THE FACTORY EXHAUST. DRIVER'S SIDE DOWN PIPE THREE IS PUT IN PLACE ON TOP OF THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FLANGE. HELLION'S TURBO HEADER GOES IN NEXT. THE QUALITY AND FITMENT GOES TO SHOW THEY TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR WORK. THE FACTORY FASTENERS TIGHTEN IT DOWN. NOW DOWN PIPE TWO IS SLID IN BEHIND THE HEADER AND MATED TO PIPE THREE. THIS IS WHERE THE OPTIMUM GRAY COMES INTO PLAY. THE SUPPLIED PLUG WIRES GO IN NEXT. THEY ROUTE FROM UNDERNEATH THE HEADER AND UP TO THE COIL PACKS. THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. FOUR FASTENERS SECURE IT. THERE ARE ALSO A COUPLE OF CONNECTORS THAT HAVE TO BE UNPLUGGED. ALL THE PLASTIC SURROUNDING THE RADIATOR REMOVED AS WELL. THEY ARE ALL HELD IN WITH PUSH PINS. THIS COOLER IS UNBOLTED AND SWUNG OUT OF THE WAY FOR NOW. TWO SUPPORT BRACKETS ARE REMOVED FROM THE BUMPER TO CORE SUPPORT, AND EIGHT FASTENERS LET THE BUMPER SEPARATE FROM THE CAR.
(PAT)>> THOSE PRECISION TURBOS COMPRESS THE INCOMING AIR AND BUILD SOME BOOST, BUT THE BYPRODUCT OF THAT PROCESS IS THAT SAME AIR GETS HEATED UP, REDUCING THE EFFICIENCY OF POWER PRODUCTION. TO COOL THE INCOMING AIR AND TO MAXIMIZE HORSEPOWER A LARGE AIR TO AIR INTERCOOLER IS USED. THIS ONE WAS CUSTOM BUILT TO HELLION'S SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES A THREE AND A HALF INCH THICK CORE, A RELOCATED SPOT FOR THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, AND BILLET HOSE CONNECTIONS FOR THE OUTLET AND THE INLETS. NOW IT FITS NEATLY IN THE FRONT OF THE CAMARO WITH THE SUPPLIED BRACKETRY. NOW THIS IS THE SAME INTERCOOLER THAT IS USED ON APPLICATIONS THAT MAKE OVER 1,200 HORSEPOWER. SO IT'S PLENTY BIG ENOUGH FOR OUR LT ONE CAMARO. INSTALLING THE COOLER IS A TWO PERSON JOB. THE COOLER BRACKETS GET SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE BUMPER AND FRONT SUBFRAME HORNS. THE FACTORY FASTENERS SECURE IT ALL BACK IN PLACE. THE PARADE OF NEW PARTS CONTINUES AFTER THE BREAK.

NOW JUST AN FYI, THESE ARE MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR HELLION. THEY'RE A FOUR PLY DESIGN THAT CAN HANDLE HIGH TEMPERATURES, AND THEY'VE EVEN BEEN USED ON CARS THAT MAKE WELL OVER 50 POUNDS OF BOOST. THE PIPE THAT HOUSES THE BLOW OFF VALVE GOES IN NEXT. IT GOES FROM THE COOLER UP TOWARDS THE TURBO. THE BLOW OFF VALVE IS SECURED WITH A VBAND AND CONTROLLED BY A VACUUM LINE. IT IS VISIBLE THROUGH THE FRONT FASCIA AFTER IT GOES BACK ON. NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE BOOST PRODUCERS. PRECISION 62 MILLIMETER BALL BEARING TURBOS TO BE EXACT. LIKE JON MENTIONED EARLIER, THEY ARE SECURED BY VBAND CLAMPS FOR A LEAK PROOF SEAL. WE LOVE THE MOUNTING LOCATION. AS SOON AS THE HOOD IS RAISED YOU WILL GET A FACE FULL OF AWESOMENESS.
(PAT)>> NOW DOWN PIPE ONE IS INSTALLED. THIS MAKES THE FINAL CONNECTION FROM THE TURBO TO THE EXHAUST. THE WASTE GATE ATTACHES TO THE HEADER NOW, AND A SMALL PIPE CONNECTS IT TO THE DOWN PIPE. THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX HAS BEEN RELOCATED, AND WITH A SWING OF THIS LEVER IT IS COMPLETE. ALSO RELOCATED IS THE FACTORY COOLANT TANK. THEY REDUCE TURBO LAG BY KEEPING MORE HEAT IN THE EXHAUST HOUSING. SAFETY WIRE IS SUPPLIED TO WRAP AROUND THE RIVETED ANCHORS. THEY ALSO SERVE AS A GREAT HEAD BARRIER TO PROTECT UNDER HOOD COMPONENTS.

INEVITABLY IN ANY ENGINE CONVERSATION I HAVE WITH A HOT RODDER THE SUBJECT ALWAYS COMES UP OF HOW MUCH POWER DOES YOUR BULLET MAKE AND WHETHER IT'S BEEN ON AN ENGINE DYNO OR A CHASSIS DYNO. EITHER WAY I LOVE HEARING THE ANSWER AND THAT ANSWER IS ALWAYS GIVEN TO ME IN PEAK NUMBERS FOR BOTH HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE. WHEN BUILDING ENGINES FOR TRUE RACING APPLICATIONS THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE TO CONSIDER, AVERAGE POWER. PEAK NUMBERS ARE GREAT FOR BRAGGING RIGHTS BUT THE AVERAGE POWER OVER YOUR OPERATING RANGE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT, PERHAPS EVEN MORE SO. MAKING MORE AVERAGE HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE WILL RUN FASTER THAN SOMETHING THAT GOES UP FAST AND FALLS OFF EVEN FASTER IN THAT SAME RANGE. DYNO TESTING IS ESSENTIAL FOR FINDING THIS OUT. AN ENGINE OR CHASSIS DYNO PRODUCES A GRAPH AND NUMERICAL INFORMATION TO SHOW WHAT'S GOING ON IN YOUR OPERATING RANGE. I'VE DRAWN A COUPLE OF EXAMPLES ON MY TRUSTY WHITE BOARD TO SHOW YOU WHAT I MEAN. BOTH OF THESE ENGINES OPERATE IN THE SAME RANGE AND THEY MAKE THE SAME PEAK NUMBERS. THE TOP GRAPH SHOWS A CURVE THAT'S MORE ABRUPT WITH POWER RISING FAST BUT FALLING OFF HARD AFTER PEAK. THE LOWER GRAPH HAS A SMOOTHER CURVE EVERYWHERE HOLDING POWER NUMBERS FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME. THIS IS WHAT'S CALLED AREA UNDER THE CURVE. THE DATA LOOKED AT BETWEEN THESE TWO POINTS, WHICH IS THE OPERATING RANGE, ARE ADDED UP AND DIVIDED BY THE RANGE, AND THAT GIVES YOU AN AVERAGE. BOTH HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE NUMBERS ARE CALCULATED. THE HIGHER AVERAGE NUMBER BETWEEN THE TWO GRAPHS IS THE BOTTOM ONE, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY PRODUCE THE SAME PEAK NUMBERS THE HIGHER AVERAGE POWER GRAPH WILL RUN FASTER DOWN THE TRACK GIVEN EVERYTHING IS SETUP CORRECTLY IN THE CAR. THAT'S BECAUSE THE ENGINE IS PRODUCING MORE POWER AT ANY GIVEN POINT IN THE OPERATING RANGE. ANOTHER THING TO NOTE ON A DYNO GRAPH IS WHERE THE LINES CROSS, WHICH IS 5,252 RPM. WHY, BECAUSE HORSEPOWER IS CALCULATED FROM MEASURED TORQUE TIMES THE RPM DIVIDED BY 5,252. NOW IF YOU LOOK AT A GRAPH WHERE THE NUMBERS DON'T CROSS THERE, THERE MAY OR MAY NOT BE SOMETHING GOOFY GOING ON, AND I WOULD QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF THE GRAPH YOU'RE LOOKING AT. SO WHAT CAN WE TAKE AWAY FROM ALL OF THIS INFORMATION? WELL MORE AREA UNDER THE CURVE, OR IN THIS CASE MORE POWER IN YOUR OPERATING ON AN AVERAGE, WILL ABSOLUTELY RUN FASTER IF EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE CAR IS RIGHT. NOW IT WILL TAKE SOME SPECIALIZED EQUIPMENT TO FIND YOUR AVERAGE POWER, MEANING A DYNO, BUT IT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH DOING IF YOU'RE TRYING TO BUILD AN ENGINE TO BE COMPETITIVE. NOW PEAK NUMBERS STILL ARE IMPORTANT BUT HOW HIGH THAT NUMBER IS BEFORE AND AFTER PEAK IS WHAT'S GONNA HELP PUT YOU IN THE WINNER'S CIRCLE.
