PLUS A FULL GARAGE AREA, TECH INSPECTION STATION, AND FUEL STATION. NCM WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT WITH CHALLENGING FEATURES THAT

SHADOWED THE FAMOUS LE SARTHE IN LE MANS, FRANCE. NOW THIS IS THE DESTINATION AND FACILITY THAT ANYONE NEEDS TO VISIT WHO HAS THE ITCH TO GO FAST AND CARVE CORNERS. NOW AT THIS POINT YOU ALL HAVE TO BE ASKING, WELL WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING THERE? WELL IT'S PRETTY SIMPLE. WE BROUGHT A CAR BUT IT'S NOT EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE USED TO SEEING IN OUR SHOP.

NOW IT'S TIME TO START THE TRANSFORMATION. WE'RE GOING TO ADD SOME SERIOUS POWER AND SOUND, AND THAT COMES IN THE FORM OF BOOST AND AN AWESOME EXHAUST SETUP, AND THEY'RE BOTH FROM COMPANIES THAT YOU'RE WELL

AWARE OF, BUT FIRST WE NEED TO GET A BASELINE BACK ON THE CHASSIS DYNO.

(PAT)>> LIKE WE MENTIONED EARLIER, THIS ENGINE IS RATED AT 200 HORSEPOWER. THE TRANSMISSION IS A MANUAL, AND FIFTH GEAR IS ONE TO ONE. GO AHEAD AND GUESS WHAT YOU THINK IT WILL MAKE AT THE TIRES. PEAK POWER IS AT 7,000 RPM, AND WE'LL TURN IT TO THE REV LIMITER, AND HERE'S THE BEST OF TWO RUNS THAT WE MADE. 171 HORSE, 143 POUND FEET OF TORQUE.

(MIKE)>> NOT BAD, 200 RATING AT THE FLYWHEEL. SO IT LOST 29 HORSE. THAT'S RESPECTABLE!

(MIKE)>> ABSOLUTELY, AND WE'LL DO THAT BY INCREASING THE OUTPUT OF THIS POWER PLANT, DUBBED THE FA 20. NOW THIS IS A VERY IMPRESSIVE ENGINE FOR ITS SIZE.

IT'S AN ALL ALUMINUM, VERY COMPACT BOXER ENGINE THAT HAS DIRECT INJECTION AND HIGH COMPRESSION. IT PRODUCES 100 HORSEPOWER PER LITER AT THE CRANK. NOW IF YOU'VE NEVER SEEN HOW A BOX ENGINE FUNCTIONS HERE'S AN AWESOME LOOK. THE INTAKE SYSTEM IS A LIGHT WEIGHT COMPOSITE DESIGN WITH EXTRA LONG RUNNERS FOR A BROAD POWER BAND. THE ACCESSORY DRIVE IS SLIM LINE AND VERY COMPACT. THIS IS WHERE YOU GET THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE FLAT FOUR ENGINE DESIGN. THE FRONT COVER SPANS THE WIDTH OF THE ENGINE, AND WITH IT OUT OF THE WAY THE HORIZONTAL OPPOSING CYLINDER

DESIGN IS VISIBLE, ALLOWING FOR A WELL BALANCED AND EFFICIENT ENGINE PACKAGE. THE PISTONS ARE 180 DEGREES APART, MAKING THE ENGINE INHERENTLY LOW IN VIBRATION.

THE CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN INCORPORATES FOUR VALVES PER CYLINDER, ACTUATED BY DUAL OVERHEAD CAMS. NOW THIS ENGINE DESIGN INCREASES VALVE AREA ON

SMALLER BORES, INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF AIR FUEL MIXTURE ENTERING THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, IMPROVING THE POWER AND EFFICIENCY. THE ENGINE DESIGN GIVES THE VEHICLE A LOWER CENTER OF GRAVITY AND BETTER BALANCE FOR A PERFORMANCE PLATFORM.

(PAT)>> MAJOR MANUFACTURERS ARE SUPPORTING THIS PLATFORM BECAUSE QUITE FRANKLY IT'S WELL DESERVING OF IT, AND EDELBROCK HAS JUMPED ON BOARD BY DESIGNING AN EFORCE SUPERCHARGER SYSTEM THAT'S A DIRECT BOLT ON FOR THE FRS AND BRZ. NOW EDELBROCK CLAIMS IT WILL MAKE 242 HORSEPOWER AND 186 POUND FEET OF TORQUE AT THE TIRES WITH THEIR 50 STATE LEGAL TUNE UP. NOW THAT'S AROUND A 40 PERCENT GAIN IN POWER, WHICH IS PRETTY GOOD FOR A LITTLE TWO LITER ENGINE. THIS EFORCE BLOWER IS BASED ON THE EATON TVS 13-20 SUPERCHARGER. TVS REFERS TO THE DESIGN OF THE TWIN FOUR LOBE ROTORS, AND THAT STANDS FOR "TWIN VORTICES SERIES". THE LOBES HAVE 160 DEGREE TWIST, WHICH

INTERLOCK AS THEY ROTATE. THAT DRAWS IN, TRAPS, COMPRESSES, AND FORCES THE INCOMING AIR INTO THE ENGINE. THIS KIT ALSO CONTAINS A HEAT EXCHANGER, AIR BOX ASSEMBLY,

INTERCOOLER PUMP, PLUS ALL OF THE HARDWARE, HOSES, EVEN A TUNER. EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR A COMPLETE ASSEMBLY. NOW WE ARE PUMPED TO SEE HOW THIS CAR FEELS WITH ALL THAT ADDITIONAL POWER. SO NOW IT'S TIME TO START GETTING THIS STUFF INSTALLED.

(MIKE)>> WITH THE CAR ON THE LIFT, THE FIRST THING TO COME OFF IS THE SPLASH GUARD. NOW THE FASCIA SUPPORT IS REMOVED, AND THE ENTIRE FASCIA CAN NOW BE CAREFULLY PULLED FORWARD AND CARRIED OFF. DRAINING THE RADIATOR IS THE NEXT STEP. NOW THE AIR INLET TUBE CAN BE REMOVED, AND THE NOISE GENERATOR ASSEMBLY IS UNBOLTED. REMOVE THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR AND PUT IT IN A SAFE PLACE.

NOW THE UPPER AIR BOX ASSEMBLY IS PULLED OUT, ALONG WITH THE LOWER AIR BOX ASSEMBLY AND RADIATOR SHROUD.

(PAT)>> AFTER REMOVING A FEW CONNECTIONS AND HOSES, WE MADE IT EASY TO REMOVE THE ECU AND IT'S MOUNTING PLATE. THE FUEL CROSSOVER LINE IS DISCONNECTED, AND THE PASSENGER SIDE RAIL AND INJECTORS ARE PULLED OUT, AS WELL AS THE DRIVER'S SIDE RAIL AND INJECTORS. NOW UNBOLT THE THROTTLE BODY AND MOVE IT TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE.

(MIKE)>> TO CLEAR THE MANIFOLD ASSEMBLY THIS HYDRAULIC CLUTCH LINE NEEDS TO BE ROTATED TO THE PASSENGER SIDE. NEW BANJO WASHERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE KIT. WE'RE MAKING GOOD PROGRESS SO FAR ON OUR FRS. NOW EDELBROCK MAKES THIS INSTALL A BREEZE WITH DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS AND A WELL ENGINEERED KIT. WHEN WE COME BACK FROM THE BREAK THE WORK CONTINUES.

(PAT)>> WE'RE BACK AND OVER THE BREAK WE PROGRESSED SOME OF THE STEPS ON THIS DEAL THAT AREN'T EXACTLY GLAMOUROUS OR EXCITING BUT NECESSARY FOR THE BUILD, WHICH INCLUDED INSTALLING A FEW LINES AND HOSES, BUT THE NEXT FEW STEPS ARE GONNA BE DEDICATED TO PUTTING ON SOME WIRING. THIS RELAY MOUNTS TO THE FENDER AND IT'S FOR THE SUPERCHARGER'S WATER PUMP. THE 12 VOLT CONSTANT TERMINAL GOES TO THE POSITIVE STUD ON THE BATTERY TERMINAL. NOW THE EVAP CONNECTOR CAN CONNECT TO THE FACTORY HARNESS, AND THE OTHER ONE TO THE EVAP SOLENOID HARNESS. A SUPPLIED FEAD BRACKET CAN BE POSITIONED ON THE FACTORY ALTERNATOR BRACKET AND TIGHTENED DOWN. NOW THE LOW TEMPERATURE RADIATOR, OR AS WE ALL KNOW IT, THE HEAT EXCHANGER, CAN BE POSITIONED IN FRONT OF THE A/C CONDENSER AND SECURED WITH THE CONDENSER'S FACTORY HARDWARE.

(MIKE)>> NOW ALL THE PREP WORK IS DONE AND IT'S TIME FOR THE MAIN EVENT. NOW THIS SUPERCHARGER WILL PRODUCE 10 POUNDS OF BOOST

WITH THE SUPPLIED PULLEY ON OUR FRS' TWO POINT ZERO

LITER FLAT FOUR ENGINE. IT'S EQUIPPED WITH AN INTEGRATED BYPASS VALVE FOR A MINIMAL DECREASE IN FUEL ECONOMY AND HAS A SELF CONTAINED OILING SYSTEM WITH A 100,000 MILE SERVICE INTERVAL. WITH THE HIGH PROFILE DUE TO THE LONG RUNNER DESIGN, IT FITS IN PLACE PRETTY EASY. NOW A COUPLE OF HARNESSES HAD TO BE MASSAGED BUT THAT'S IT.

(PAT)>> THERE YOU GO.

(MIKE)>> HERE'S A DIAGRAM OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER, HOSES, AND PUMP. THE FIRST HOSE IS RAN FROM THE INTERCOOLER TO THE HEAT EXCHANGER. THEN ANOTHER FROM THE INTERCOOLER TO THIS EXPANSION TANK.

THEN TO THE PUMP, AND THE FINAL LINE IS RAN FROM IT TO THE HEAT EXCHANGER.

NOW THE SUPERCHARGER IS TORQUED TO THE CYLINDER HEADS.

(PAT)>> THE STOCK INJECTORS AND FUEL RAILS ARE REUSED AND GO BACK ON AT THIS TIME, FOLLOWED BY THE ECU AND ITS BRACKET.

(MIKE)>> WE'RE GETTING DOWN TO THE FINAL STEPS OF THIS INSTALL. NOW EDELBROCK DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ENGINEERING THIS SYSTEM. NOW THIS IS AN INSTALL THAT ANYONE WITH BASIC MECHANICAL

KNOWLEDGE AND A FEW HAND TOOLS CAN ACTUALLY HANDLE. NOW THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL IS VERY DETAILED AND HAS PICTURES FOR EACH AND EVERY STEP. WHEN WE GET THIS THING ALL WRAPPED UP WE'RE GONNA HAVE A LIGHT WEIGHT SUPERCHARGED REAR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE THAT FITS RIGHT AT HOME WITH ANY OF TODAY'S MUSCLE CARS. NOW THE EVAP, PCV, AND BRAKE BOOSTER HOSES ARE ATTACHED TO THE NOSE OF THE SUPERCHARGER, AND THE THROTTLE BODY GOES BACK ON. MAKING THE CONNECTION TO IT IS A SUPPLIED EXTENSION HARNESS.

THE INCLUDED BELT IS ROUTED AROUND ALL THE PULLEYS.

(MIKE)>> NICE! AND THE FRONT HALF OF THE AIR BOX ASSEMBLY IS INSTALLED. THEN THE FILTER IS LAID IN.

(PAT)>> AND THE REAR HALF OF THE AIR BOX IS POSITIONED AND SECURED IN PLACE.

(MIKE)>> NOW THE MASS AIR FLOW HARNESS EXTENSION IS CONNECTED.

THE DRAINED COOLANT FROM EARLIER IS PUT BACK IN THE RADIATOR, AND A 50-50 COOLANT MIXTURE FILLS THE SUPERCHARGER COOLING SYSTEM.

(PAT)>> BEFORE WE FIRE THIS UP, ANYTHING THAT GETS SUPERCHARGED NEEDS A BETTER FLOWING AND MORE AGGRESSIVE SOUNDING EXHAUST IN OUR OPINION. NOW OUR CHOICE COMES FROM THE MOST FAMOUS LINE

IN EXHAUST, HOOKER. THIS IS THEIR BLACK HEART SERIES AND IT'S CONSTRUCTED OF 18 GAUGE 304 STAINLESS. IT IS SEVEN POUNDS LIGHTER THAN THE FACTORY SYSTEM. PLUS IT HAS A TWO AND A HALF INCH PIPE DIAMETER. WITH THE STOCK SYSTEM REMOVED, THE RESONATOR AND MID PIPE GO ON FIRST AS AN ASSEMBLY, AND IS SUPPORTED BY THE FACTORY HANGERS FOR MAXIMUM GROUND CLEARANCE. THE DRIVER'S SIDE MUFFLER IS NEXT. IT'S STAINLESS AND SPORTS THE HOOKER LOGO. THE PASSENGER SIDE FOLLOWS, AND TIGHTENING ALL THE CLAMPS MAKES THIS THE EASIEST CAT BACK WE'VE EVER INSTALLED.

(MIKE)>> TODAY'S TECH TIP IS GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW TO CLEARANCE A BLOCK TO ACCEPT A STROKER ROTATING ASSEMBLY. NOW THIS WILL BENEFIT YOU IN A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT WAYS. THE FIRST, IT'LL ALLOW YOU TO SAVE MONEY AT THE MACHINE SHOP BY ELIMINATING A STEP THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO DO, AND SECOND, IT LETS YOU EXPAND YOUR KNOWLEDGE, MAKING YOU A BETTER ENGINE BUILDER.

THE TOOLS YOU'LL NEED FOR THIS ARE REALLY BASIC, A DIE

GRINDER, CARBIDE BURR, AND A CARTRIDGE ROLL.

(PAT)>> WHEN THE STROKE IS INCREASED ON A CRANK SHAFT, BOTH ITS COUNTER WEIGHTS AND ITS JOURNALS MOVE AWAY FROM ITS CENTERLINE. NOW MOST BLOCKS CAN ONLY ACCOMMODATE STOCK STROKES DUE TO ITS PACKAGING WHEN THE TIME THE ENGINE WAS DESIGNED.

SO THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME A CLEARANCE PROBLEM WILL DEVELOP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE CYLINDER IN THE BLOCK. TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHERE THAT LACK OF CLEARANCE IS WE NEED TO DO A LITTLE MOCK UP, AND THAT INVOLVES INSTALLING SOME MAIN BEARINGS. WE'LL USE THE FRONT, THE THRUST, AND THE REAR BEARING. USE A LITTLE OIL TO LUBE THEM UP, AND DROP IN THE CRANK SHAFT. WITH BEARINGS IN THE MAIN CAPS, THEY CAN GO ON AND WE'LL TORQUE THEM IN PLACE. NOW WE CAN INSTALL THE PISTON AND ROD ASSEMBLIES IN THE FRONT TWO CYLINDERS. THIS IS A SMALL BLOCK MOPAR BUT THE PROCEDURE IS COMMON PLACE IN ANY CONVENTIONAL VEIGHT YOU PUT A STROKER KIT INTO. NOW THE STOCK STROKE ON THIS IS THREEFIVE-80 BUT WE'VE INCREASED IT TO FOUR INCH. NOW THAT'S A 420 THOUSANDTHS INCREASE AND HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.

(MIKE)>> THE ROD BOLT STICKS OUT THE FARTHEST. NOW IT HITS THE BOTTOM OF THE CYLINDER, MAKING THIS THE INTERFERENCE.

USING A SHARPIE OR PAINT PEN, MARK THE AREA OF THE CYLINDER AROUND THE ROD BOLT. HERE'S A LITTLE TIP.
