(MIKE)>> SINCE 1985 HOUSTON, TEXAS, BASED SCHOOL OF AUTOMOTIVE MACHINIST AND TECHNOLOGY HAS BEEN PROVIDING THE VERY MACHINING AND TECHNICAL TRAINING FOR STUDENTS WANTING A CAREER IN THE HIGH PERFORMANCE AND RACING INDUSTRY, BUT THERE'S NO BORING CURRICULUM HERE. STUDENTS CAN ENROLL IN CLASSES LIKE ENGINE BLOCK MACHINING, CYLINDER HEAD MACHINING, CNC, EFI TUNING, AND CAN EVEN GET THEIR ASSOCIATES DEGREE. NOW THIS PLACE IS ACTUALLY PRETTY SPECIAL TO MY COHOST PAT.
(PAT)>> THIS IS LIKE OLD HOME WEEK TO ME. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DIDN'T KNOW I ACTUALLY RAN THIS PLACE. I WAS THE GENERAL MANAGER AND CHIEF MACHINING INSTRUCTOR FROM 1999 ALL THE WAY TO 2006, AND I ALSO STARTED THE RACE PROGRAM HERE. NOW A LOT HAS CHANGED SINCE I'VE BEEN HERE, BUT A LOT REMAINS THE SAME. THIS PLACE HAS UP TO DATE EQUIPMENT, AND THEY PUT OUT PEOPLE THAT GO EVERYWHERE IN THE INDUSTRY FROM NASCAR, NHRA, EVEN STARTING THEIR OWN SHOPS, AND BY THE LOOKS OF IT THEY'RE STILL DOING A GREAT JOB.
(JUD)>> AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY CHANGE CAMS. LESS TOTAL AIR COMES IN BUT THE POWER GOES UP BECAUSE MORE OF IT GOT TRAPPED.
(MIKE)>> THE DEAN OF THIS SCHOOL IS THE MAN WHO FOUNDED IT, JUDSON MASSENGILL. WHAT WOULD LEAD TO SAM TECH WAS A COMPANY CALLED NORTHWEST ENGINE AND SUPPLY THAT JUD STARTED AROUND 1980. ALTHOUGH HE WAS SUCCESSFUL BUILDING PERFORMANCE ENGINES FOR BOTH RACE CARS AND BOATS, HE KEPT FINDING HIMSELF SHARING A CONSTANT PROBLEM WITH HIS WIFE AND BUSINESS PARTNER LINDA.
(JUD)>> I JUST CAN'T GET ANY HELP. THERE IS NO HELP OUT THERE YOU KNOW? WE'RE LOOKING FOR HELP EVERY WEEK. SO ANYWAY LINDA SAYS, YOU KNOW, THERE NEEDS TO BE A SCHOOL FOR SOMETHING LIKE, AND I SAID, LINDA, THERE'S NO SCHOOLS TO TEACH HOW TO BUILD RACE ENGINES RIGHT? AND SHE SAYS, WELL, WE NEED TO MAKE ONE.
(LINDA)>> SO I PURSUED THE APPLICATION WITH THE STATE AND THE ACCREDITING COMMISSION AT THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. I KNEW THAT JUD KNEW EVERYTHING THERE WAS TO KNOW ABOUT ENGINES, AND I FELT THAT I KNEW HOW TO RUN A BUSINESS. SO THAT'S HOW IT GOT STARTED.
(PAT)>> IN 1985 SAM TECH HAD JUST 30 STUDENTS ON THE ROLL, BUT JUD KNEW IT WAS A GREAT START AND HASN'T LOOKED BACK.
(JUD)>> WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS EVER SINCE AND WE JUST KEEP GROWING YOU KNOW, AND WE JUST HAD BLOCK, AND THEN WE WENT INTO CYLINDER HEAD, AND THEN THE CNC CAME ALONG. OH LOOK, THEY'RE GOING EVERYWHERE RIGHT? SO YOU KNOW WE ADDED CNC, AND THEN OUR LAST ADDITION, WHICH HAS JUST BEEN RECENTLY IN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF I GUESS, IS THE EFI TUNING, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE YOUNG, SHARP KIDS THAT THEY DON'T WANT MACHINE. THEY WANT TO TUNE, AND THERE IS A MARKET FOR THAT, AND THAT'S WHERE WE'VE BEEN. WE HAVE A GREAT TIME. WE'VE GOT A GREAT CREW. FOR MY IT'S LIKE GOING TO DISNEYLAND EVERY DAY. I JUST LOVE IT, AND WHERE MY ENGINES USED TO BE MY EGO NOW MY GRADUATES ARE.
(PAT)>> TODAY THEY'VE RECEIVED THE SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD TWICE IN A ROW. IN FACT, THEY WERE GIVEN AN ACCREDITATION RENEWAL OF SIX YEARS, WHERE AS MOST SCHOOLS ARE ONLY APPROVED FOR FIVE. IN ADDITION TO THE CLASS ROOM LEARNING THAT HAPPENS HERE, PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IS TIME SPENT ON THE ACTUAL MACHINES THESE STUDENTS WILL BE USING IN THE REAL WORLD, BUT THEY HAVE TO START WITH THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MACHINING.
(ZACH)>> OUR FUNDAMENTALS, WE TEACH MEASURING AT THE BEGINNING. THAT'S OUR VERY FIRST THING. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO READ ALL THE MEASURING DEVICES IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MACHINE TO A PERFECT SIZE. SO THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING. WE FOCUS ON THAT UNTIL THAT IS JUST NUMBER ONE IN YOUR HEAD. THEN FROM THERE WE'LL TEACH YOU HOW TO SETUP EVERY MACHINE FROM AN OLD MACHINE TO SOMETHING THAT'S BRAND NEW WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY. OUR OLD MACHINERY, SUCH AS YOUR CK HONE, YOU'VE GOT TO LEARN HOW TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO SETUP STONES AND SHOES, STROKE OF THE MACHINE, AND PHYSICALLY HOW THAT MACHINE WORKS CAUSE IT'S A MANUAL MACHINE. THEN ONCE YOU UNDERSTAND IT WE CAN MOVE YOU ON TO AN SV HONE, WHICH IS A LOT MORE ADVANCED IN THE TECHNOLOGY. SO IF YOU GET ONTO THAT MACHINE AND DON'T UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALS OF IT THEN REALLY YOU'RE JUST PUSHING BUTTONS. SO RUNNING THE OLDER STUFF HELPS GET YOU CAUGHT UP AND UNDERSTAND THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MACHINING FIRST.
(AARON)>> YEAH, THE WAY WE RUN THINGS IS JUST SO DIFFERENT. IT'S COMPLETELY HANDS ON. THERE IS THE CLASSROOM TIME, BUT EVEN THAT IS A REAL LOOSE ENVIRONMENT, AND WE DO GET DOWN TO THE SHOP TIME. EVERY MOTOR THAT COMES THROUGH HERE, WHETHER IT BE A FRIEND OF THE SCHOOL, A RACE ENGINE, A STUDENT PROJECT, EVERYBODY WORKS ON IT. WE'LL ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. SHOW THEM HOW TO DO ANYTHING THEY'RE WILLING TO ATTEMPT. JUST TRY TO BRING THE STUDENTS IN AS MUCH AS WE CAN AND GET THEM INVOLVED, AND IT HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT A LOT. STUDENTS, I THINK, LEARN MORE, AND THEY'RE JUST DOING MORE DRAWN INTO IT THAN SOMEWHERE WHERE YOU'RE QUOTING OUT OF A TEXT BOOK OR SOMETHING.

NOW FROM DRAG WEEK CAMAROS TO AUSTIN FORD'S SUPER COOL COBRAJET STOCK ELIMINATOR CAR, YOU CAN GET UNDER THESE THINGS AND WORK ON THEM. WE'RE GONNA MEET UP WITH AUSTIN A LITTLE BIT LATER ON HIS COBRAJET ENGINE PROJECT, AND HEY, EVEN LATER THAN THAT WE MAY EVEN GET TO GO TO THE DRAG STRIP.

(MIKE)>> HERE AT SAM TECH IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE LATHES, VERTICAL MILLS, AND HONING MACHINES. SAM TECH HAS SOME OF THE LATEST CNC MACHINING EQUIPMENT IN THE INDUSTRY. WHAT'S REALLY COOL IS BACK HERE ON THE TAKUMI THEY'RE DOING BLOCK MACHINING THAT TAKUMI DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ANYBODY IN THE INDUSTRY WAS CAPABLE OF. NOW WE'RE GONNA CHECK SOME OF THE MACHINING PROCESSES OUT. CNC STANDS FOR COMPUTER NUMERICAL CONTROL. IT'S THE AUTOMATION OF THE MACHINING PROCESS CONTROLLED BY A COMPUTER, BUT IT STILL TAKES AN OPERATOR TO PROGRAM THESE HIGHLY COMPLEX MACHINES AND THAT IS WHAT'S TAUGHT IN THIS LAB, AND IT'S NOT JUST THE MANUFACTURING SIDE. CAD, OR COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN, IS ALSO THE CURRICULUM, AND THEIR FARO ARM COORDINATE MEASURING MACHINE ALLOWS STUDENTS TO LEARN HOW TO DO THREED INSPECTIONS, DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS, REVERSE ENGINEERING, AND LOTS MORE.
(PAT)>> NOW WE'RE NOT OUT BACK IN YOUR DADDY'S WOODSHED. WE ARE UP STAIRS IN THE CYLINDER HEAD DEPARTMENT WHERE STATE OF THE ART MACHINERY IS USED TO TEACH THE STUDENTS. NOW YOU CAN FIND THIS TYPE OF MACHINERY ANY WHERE FROM UNCLE JOHNNY'S FEED AND SPEED TO TOP TEAMS LIKE IN NASCAR AND NHRA.
(MIKE)>> UP HERE STUDENTS DON'T JUST LEARN HOW TO GRIND AWAY ON HEADS TO MAKE BETTER FLOW. THEY LEARN HOW AND WHY MODIFYING THE HEADS CAN MAKE THE ENTIRE ENGINE PERFORM BETTER.
(SHAWN)>> WE SIT DOWN AND FIGURE OUT WHERE DO WE WANT TO START ON THIS CYLINDER HEAD, RIGHT? WE START OBVIOUSLY WITH THE GUIDE, THINGS LIKE THAT, AND KIND OF ALL THE FUNCTIONS OF IT, ALL THE PARTS, HOW TO MAKE EVERYTHING WORK TOGETHER, AND THERE'S NO SINGLE PART OF THE ENGINE THAT IS WHERE YOU HAVE TO FOCUS. I CAN PUT THE BEST CYLINDER HEAD ON THE WORST ENGINE AND IT'D STILL BE THE WORST ENGINE THERE IS. SO WE HAVE TO TEACH EVERYONE HOW DO WE PICK THESE PARTS TO GO TOGETHER AND MAKE THE BEST COMBINATION?
(MIKE)>> WHEN IT COMES TO THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY IN THE AUTOMOTIVE WORLD IT CAN BE FOUND HERE AT SAM TECH. THIS IS THE NEW LTONE GM ENGINE THAT'S FOUND IN NEW CORVETTES AND CAMAROS. THIS ONE HAS BEEN STROKED TO 416 CUBIC INCHES AND SPORTS A PAXTON CENTRIFUGAL SUPERCHARGER. NOW ENGINE POWER, PIETZ PERFORMANCE TUNES, AND SAM TECH CAME TOGETHER TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN TODAY. SUMMIT RACING SUPPLIED AN ECU AND HARNESS TO RUN IT. ALEX WILL BE DOING THE TUNING, AND SAM TECH DID ALL THE HOOK UP. LET'S SEE HOW IT DOES. WITH THIS BEING A NEW COMBO WE WEREN'T SURE HOW WELL IT WAS GOING TO RUN. THIS PULL IS OUR STARTING POINT. IT'S GOING THROUGH THE SWEEP VERY WELL, BUT AS THE ENGINE ACCELERATES IT STARTS MAKING ENOUGH POWER TO VIOLENTLY MOVE ENOUGH AIR AROUND TO TRY AND RIP OUR CAMERA APART IN THE DYNO CELL.
NOT BAD, POSTING JUST UNDER 850 HORSEPOWER. DURING THE FIRST COUPLE OF EASY PULLS WE NOTICED THE THROTTLE WAS CLOSING AS MUCH AS 40 PERCENT. SO WE INCREASED THE DYNO'S ACCELERATION RATE AND MADE ANOTHER PULL, AND IT WAS WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR. [ engine revving ]
(MIKE)>> I SAW SOME GOOD NUMBERS. BIG NUMBERS INDEED. CHECK OUT THIS GRAPH. SUPER SMOOTH, AND MORE POWER THAN YOU'LL EVER NEED FOR A STREET CAR, 909 HORSEPOWER, 773 POUND FEET OF TORQUE. ( )>> SEE IF THERE'S ANY IMPROVEMENTS WE CAN MAKE. WE'RE ALSO GONNA LOOK AT OUR SPARK AND TOTAL KNOCK RETARD.
(MIKE)>> HERE AT SAM TECH IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE ENGINE DYNOS. THE CHASSIS DYNO IS A GREAT TOOL FOR THE INSTRUCTORS TO TEACH THE STUDENTS WITH. NOW FOR GUYS THAT DON'T HAVE AN ENGINE DYNO, THIS IS A GREAT TOOL TO BREAK ENGINES IN, BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY TUNE THE VEHICLES BEFORE THEY HIT THE STREET. NOW THIS IS A HELLCAT THAT'S BASICALLY PRETTY FAMOUS. IT'S THE FIRST ONE INTO THE NINE SECOND RANGE ON THE QUARTER MILE, AND YOU GUYS GET TO HEAR IT RUN.
(PAT)>> THE DYNO WORKS ON HOW LONG IT TAKES TO SPIN THE ROLLER UP TO A CERTAIN SPEED. [ engine revving ]

(PAT)>> IN 1985 SAM TECH HAD JUST 30 STUDENTS ON THE ROLL, BUT JUD KNEW IT WAS A GREAT START AND HASN'T LOOKED BACK.
(JUD)>> WE'VE BEEN DOING THIS EVER SINCE AND WE JUST KEEP GROWING YOU KNOW, AND WE JUST HAD BLOCK, AND THEN WE WENT INTO CYLINDER HEAD, AND THEN THE CNC CAME ALONG. OH LOOK, THEY'RE GOING EVERYWHERE RIGHT? SO YOU KNOW WE ADDED CNC, AND THEN OUR LAST ADDITION, WHICH HAS JUST BEEN RECENTLY IN THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF I GUESS, IS THE EFI TUNING, AND THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE YOUNG, SHARP KIDS THAT THEY DON'T WANT MACHINE. THEY WANT TO TUNE, AND THERE IS A MARKET FOR THAT, AND THAT'S WHERE WE'VE BEEN. WE HAVE A GREAT TIME. WE'VE GOT A GREAT CREW. FOR MY IT'S LIKE GOING TO DISNEYLAND EVERY DAY. (PAT)>> TODAY THEY'VE RECEIVED THE SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE AWARD TWICE IN A ROW. IN FACT, THEY WERE GIVEN AN ACCREDITATION RENEWAL OF SIX YEARS, WHERE AS MOST SCHOOLS ARE ONLY APPROVED FOR FIVE. IN ADDITION TO THE CLASS ROOM LEARNING THAT HAPPENS HERE, PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IS TIME SPENT ON THE ACTUAL MACHINES THESE STUDENTS WILL BE USING IN THE REAL WORLD, BUT THEY HAVE TO START WITH THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MACHINING.

YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO READ ALL THE MEASURING DEVICES IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MACHINE TO A PERFECT SIZE. SO THAT IS THE NUMBER ONE THING. WE FOCUS ON THAT UNTIL THAT IS JUST NUMBER ONE IN YOUR HEAD. THEN FROM THERE WE'LL TEACH YOU HOW TO SETUP EVERY MACHINE FROM AN OLD MACHINE TO SOMETHING THAT'S BRAND NEW WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY. OUR OLD MACHINERY, SUCH AS YOUR CK HONE, YOU'VE GOT TO LEARN HOW TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO SETUP STONES AND SHOES, STROKE OF THE MACHINE, AND PHYSICALLY HOW THAT MACHINE WORKS CAUSE IT'S A MANUAL MACHINE.
