(MIKE)>> WELCOME TO ENGINE POWER. WE'RE AT THE UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE CAMPUS IN LISLE, ILLINOIS, FOR THE PENNZOIL/UTI ENGINE BUILDING CHALLENGE. NOW IT'S GONNA BE MADE UP OF TWO TEAMS. THEY'LL BE CONSTRUCTED OF TWO STUDENTS AND ONE INSTRUCTOR GOING HEAD TO HEAD IN A DYNO SHOOTOUT. THE WINNER IS DECLARED ON WHO CAN MAKE THE MOST HORSEPOWER PER CUBIC INCH, AND ALL THIS IS BASED OFF OF PARTS THEY ORDERED FROM SUMMIT RACING.

(PAT)>> THE RULES ARE SIMPLE AND STRAIGHT FORWARD. PORTING OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND CYLINDER HEADS IS ALLOWED, BOTH TEAMS MUST RUN SHELL VPOWER PREMIUM GASOLINE. THEY HAVE FOUR DAYS TO ASSEMBLE IT. ANY CONVENTIONAL VEIGHT IS ALLOWED, AND THEY MUST RUN A CARBURETOR, BUT BEFORE THE COMPETITION GETS STARTED LET'S CHECK OUT THE REST OF THE CAMPUS AND SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO OFFER.

(MIKE)>> UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE IS A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL FOCUSED ON PREPARING STUDENTS FOR A CAREER IN THE AUTOMOTIVE OR DIESEL INDUSTRIES, WITH SEVERAL MANUFACTURER CERTIFICATION PATHS AVAILABLE TO PUT GRADUATES AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN FOR JOB PLACEMENT.

(LANCE)>> IF YOU ARE INTERESTING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE OR DIESEL FIELDS UTI IS A GOOD PLACE TO GET STARTED CAUSE YOU GET QUITE A BIT OF HANDS ON HERE, AND THEY SHOW YOU SOME NEW TEACHINGS THAT PEOPLE OUT IN THE FIELD ARE JUST NOW STARTING TO DO TOO.

(SAMUEL)>> UTI HAS ACTUALLY BEEN AN EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE. I'VE MET A LOT OF GREAT PEOPLE HERE. IF I DO COME ACROSS PEOPLE THAT ACTUALLY WANT AUTOMOTIVE DIESEL EXPERIENCE, I WILL POINT THEM IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION OF UTI.

(BRIAN)>> TECHNOLOGY CHANGES, THE INDUSTRY CHANGES, VEHICLES CHANGE, AND SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE INSTRUCTORS ARE DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB IN THE CLASSROOM ENGAGING THE STUDENTS. THE STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO TAKE WHAT THEY'VE LEARNED HERE. MAYBE THEY'RE WORKING IN THE FIELD WHILE THEY GO SCHOOL, BUT THE NEXT GENERATION THAT'S GOING OUT AND THEY'RE WORKING ON CARS AND TRUCKS. WE'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THEM TO POINT "A", AND SO IT'S A HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY BUT I THINK WE DO IT BETTER THAN ANYBODY ELSE.

(MIKE)>> BOTH TEAMS RECEIVED A $7,000 DOLLAR PARTS BUDGET FROM SUMMIT RACING. NOW THEY HAD THE OPTION OF BUILDING EITHER A SMALL BLOCK FORD, SMALL BLOCK CHEVY, OR LATE MODEL LS ENGINE. NOW THE KICKER IS EVERYTHING FROM THE BLOCK TO THE FASTENERS ALL THE WAY UP TO THE CARBURETOR HAD TO BE PURCHASED AT SUMMIT AND NOT GO OVER BUDGET.

(PAT)>> ONE TEAM CHOSE A SMALL BLOCK CHEVY, THE OTHER A SMALL BLOCK FORD. NOW BY THE LOOKS OF ALL THESE PARTS ON THE TABLE THE COMPETITION IS GONNA GET TIGHT.

(MIKE)>> IT'S A CLASSIC FORD VERSUS CHEVY SHOWDOWN, WITH BOTH TEAMS RUNNING STROKER SMALL BLOCKS.

(DUSTIN)>> THE PISTONS WE HAVE IN THERE ARE JUST MAINLY THE FLAT PISTONS BUT THEY HAVE THE CUTOUTS FOR THE VALVES, IBEAM CONNECTING RODS, AND IT'S A STROKER MOTOR.

(KENT)>> WE'RE BUILDING A SMALL BLOCK FORD. IT'S A 347 BORED 40 OVER, WHICH TAKES IT OUT TO 349. IT HAS A SOLID ROLLER CAM IN IT. WE'RE LOOKING TO STOMP THE CHEVY. THEY HAVE TO PRODUCE MORE HORSEPOWER PER CUBIC INCH, AND I THINK WE HAVE THAT.

(MIKE)>> TEAM CHEVY CONSISTS OF STUDENTS DUSTIN ULRICH AND LANCE STANFIELD, ALONG WITH INSTRUCTOR STEPHEN LISS. AS FOR TEAM FORD WE'VE GOT INSTRUCTOR MIKE PAIR, AND STUDENTS SAM EDWARDS THE THIRD AND KENT EVANS. THE GUYS ARE GONNA START OUT WITH THE CAMS ON BOTH ENGINE.

(LANCE)>> FOR THE APPLICATION WITH THE COMPRESSION RATIO THAT WE'RE RUNNING AND IT'S GONNA BE A STREET ENGINE, AND IT'S NOT GONNA BE RUNNING SUPER HIGH RPM'S, WE NEEDED A CAM THAT COULD BE USED FOR DAY TO DAY USE INSTEAD OF HIGH LIFT FOR DRAG RACING.

(MIKE)>> ALL RIGHT, YOU GUYS JUST GOT THE CAM AND I SEE IT'S A SOLID ROLLER. TELL US WHY YOU CHOOSE IT AND SOME OF THE SPECS.

(KENT)>> WE PICKED THIS CAM BECAUSE IT HAS A 6.13 LIFT ON IT. WE WANTED MORE INTAKE ON FOR OUR LIFT, AND IT'S A BEEFIER CAM THAN THE HYDRAULIC CAM. SO YOU KNOW, ACTUALLY FOR THIS ENGINE IT WORKS BETTER TO PRODUCE MORE POWER.

(MIKE)>> GOOD DEAL, HOW MANY RPM'S YOU GONNA TURN ON THE DYNO?

(KENT)>> WE'RE LOOKING TO GET AROUND 7,000 RPM SO WE CAN PUSH IT TO ITS LIMIT.

(MIKE)>> THAT'S WHAT I LIKE TO SEE.

(MICHAEL)>> THEY HAVE MORE CUBIC INCHES THAN US BUT WE HAVE A SMALLER MAIN JOURNAL DIAMETER. IT ALLOWS THE ENGINE TO SPIN TO A LITTLE BIT HIGHER RPM.

(MIKE)>> THIS WHOLE COMPETITION WOULDN'T BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT HELP FROM PENNZOIL.

(JULIE)>> THE RELATIONSHIP WITH PENNZOIL HAS BEEN FANTASTIC. SOMETHING THAT THEY'VE DONE THAT IS VERY UNIQUE AND SPECIAL IS THEY REALLY TOOK THE TIME TO FIND OUT ABOUT WHO WE ARE. TO UNDERSTAND OUR MISSION AND OUR PURPOSE TO CHANGE LIVES, AND UNDERSTANDS OUR CORE VALUES, AND EVERYTHING THEY DO IS TO SUPPORT THAT.

(DON)>> WE'RE NOT HERE TO JUST THROW MONEY AT THE SCHOOL FOR BRANDING. THIS IS REALLY WORKING FOR THAT END VISION TO PUT THE STUDENTS AND TECHNICIANS BACK IN THE MARKET PLACE. THERE'S A BIT OF A CRISIS IN THE MARKET TODAY WITH THE LACK OF TRAINED TECHNICIANS. THAT'S WHAT THIS COMPANY, UTI, DOES IS PUT TRAINED TECHNICIANS IN THE WORK FORCE.

(TERRY)>> YOU KNOW THEY REALLY TOOK THE TIME TO SPEND TIME AT THE CAMPUSES, TO TALK TO INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS TO REALLY UNDERSTAND THE CULTURE OF UTI.

(DON)>> WHAT BETTER WAY TO INVEST IN OUR FUTURE BUT TO INVEST IN A SCHOOL OR INVEST IN WAYS THAT PUT TRAINED TECHNICIANS IN THE MARKET PLACE.

(MIKE)>> WELCOME BACK TO ENGINE POWER ON LOCATION. WE'RE IN LISLE, ILLINOIS, FOR THE SHELL UTI ENGINE BUILDING CHALLENGE. NOW IN THIS ROOM BEHIND ME THERE'S TWO TEAMS. ONE BUILDING A FORD, ONE BUILDING A CHEVY, AND THEY'RE GONNA GO FOR AN ALL OUT COMPETITION ON THE DYNO TO SEE WHO CAN CREATE THE MOST HORSEPOWER PER CUBIC INCH. NOW THEY SHOULD BE PREPPING THE ROTATING ASSEMBLIES RIGHT NOW TO GET THE SHORT BLOCKS TOGETHER. LET'S GET BACK INSIDE.

(MICHAEL)>> BEFORE WE INSTALL LET'S MAKE SURE WE GET A LITTLE BIT OF OIL ON THE JOURNALS. DON'T FORGET THE REAR SEAL.

(STEPHEN)>> JUST POUR A LITTLE ON THERE. TRY NOT TO GET IT TOO MUCH IN THE REAR SEAL AREA HERE. TRY TO STAY OUT OF THAT AREA. PUT IT STRAIGHT OVER AND LOWER IT STRAIGHT DOWN EVENLY. YOU'RE IN NOW.

(MICHAEL)>> MAKE SURE IT GOES IN NICE AND STRAIGHT.

(BRIAN)>> THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY THAT WAS PRESENTED TO ONE OF THE UTI CAMPUSES. WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE IT HERE IN LISLE, ILLINOIS. A COMPETITION BETWEEN TWO TEAMS TO BUILD AN ENGINE AND TEST IT OUT USING SOME GREAT PARTS FROM SHELL, FROM SUMMIT, SOME EXCELLENT INDUSTRY SUPPORT, AND IT'S AN EXCITING CONTEST. IT'S ONE OF THOSE THINGS THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN TO A CAMPUS VERY OFTEN, AND WE WERE PLEASED THAT WE WERE SELECTED AS ONE OF THOSE CAMPUSES.

(STEPHEN)>> THE TWO STUDENTS THAT I HAVE WERE CHOSEN BASED ON APPLICATIONS AND THE STUDENTS WOULD HAVE TO HAVE EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE IN THE CLASSES.

(MICHAEL)>> WELL I HAVE MISTER SAMUEL EDWARDS. HE BASICALLY WAS REALLY THRILLED ABOUT THE ACTUAL COMPETITION WHEN HE FIRST HEARD ABOUT IT. MISTER EVANS, KENT EVANS, WAS BASICALLY KIND OF WANTING TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS TOO. HE JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING KIND OF A CHALLENGE.

(MIKE)>> WHILE THEY WERE SELECTING THEIR PARTS FROM SUMMIT RACING EACH TEAM HAD A SUMMIT ADVISOR WHO HELPED THEM.

(STEPHEN)>> WHEN WE GOT THE CRITERIA, ONE OF THE BIGGEST CRITERIA WAS THEY HAVE TO BE A PUMP GAS MOTOR, 93 OCTANE MOTOR. ONCE YOU KNOW THAT THEN YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT KIND OF COMPRESSION RATIO IS REQUIRED, AND THERE'S USUALLY A MAX COMPRESSION RATIO OF AROUND 10.5 TO ONE RUNNING 93 OCTANE.

(TERRY)>> YOU KNOW THE QUALITY OF STUDENTS COMING OUT OF UTI IS EXTRAORDINARY, AND THEIR MARKETABILITY IS INCREDIBLE. THEY'RE HERE, THEY INVEST IN THEMSELVES TO GO THROUGH THESE TOUGHEST TRAINING PROGRAMS, I BELIEVE, IN THE COUNTRY WHEN IT COMES TO AUTOMOTIVE, DIESEL, COLLISION REPAIR, YOU KNOW, MOTORCYCLE/MARINE. I MEAN OBVIOUSLY WE'RE HERE AT AN AUTO CAMPUS BUT THE STUDENTS INVEST IN A YEAR PLUS OF EDUCATION WITH THE BEST MANUFACTURERS, WITH THE BEST AFTERMARKET COMPANIES, INVESTING IN THEMSELVES TO BECOME THE FUTURE TECHNICIANS OF OUR INDUSTRY. [ mallet tapping ]

(SAMUEL)>> WHEN I LEAVE UTI I HOPE TO BECOME THE BEST DIESEL TECHNICIAN I CAN BE. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN HORSEPOWER. MAKING THINGS GO FAST IS A PASSION. I JUST HOPE ONE DAY WITH MY SON TO BE ABLE TO BUILD A HOT ROD MACHINE.

(LANCE)>> EVER SINCE I WAS A KID I'VE ALWAYS BEEN MORE MECHANICALLY INCLINED. I'VE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED WITH DIESEL. I GREW UP ON A FARM. IT'S JUST WHAT WE ALWAYS HAD. I'M A CUMMINS GUY.

(DUSTIN)>> WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I STARTED WORKING ON FARMS, WORKING WITH THE MACHINERY. A LOT OF WHAT I'M WANTING TO DO WITH WHAT I'M LEARNING HERE IS GO BACK HOME AND WORK ON FARM MACHINERY, OR JUST OTHER MACHINERY AROUND THE AREA. HELP OTHER PEOPLE FIGURE OUT WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEIR MACHINERY. EXPLAIN TO THEM WHY, YOU KNOW, SOMETHING MAY HAVE HAPPENED.

(KENT)>> BEFORE I CAME TO UTI I WORKED IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS, AND THE STEEL INDUSTRY IS VOLATILE. IT GOES UP AND DOWN, AND I GOT LAID OFF ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, AND BEING A MINISTER AT MY CHURCH, EVERYTHING FOR ME IS ABOUT FAITH. I HELD ON TO WHAT I KNEW GOD WOULD ALLOW TO HAPPEN AND WHERE GOD WOULD LEAD ME, AND HE LED ME HERE. MY WIFE HAS TAKEN ON THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE HOUSEHOLD. SHE'S ALLOWED ME TO COME TO SCHOOL, STUDY. MY SON HAS CHALLENGED ME TO STUDY. MY DAUGHTER, SHE'S THERE. THEY'VE JUST BEEN PHENOMENAL.

(PAT)>> WE'RE BACK IN UTI'S ASSEMBLY ROOM AND READY FOR THE BUILD TO CONTINUE. NOW YESTERDAY BOTH TEAMS MADE EXCELLENT PROGRESS ON THEIR PROJECTS AND HAD NO CLEARANCE OR FITMENT ISSUES, AND IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THEY DID AN EXCELLENT JOB ON PART SELECTION.

(MIKE)>> THE SHORT BLOCKS ARE ALMOST COMPLETE BUT THERE'S STILL A LONG WAY TO GO. NOW THE TOP END SELECTION FOR BOTH ENGINES IS REALLY GOOD. ONE TEAM WITH A SOLID ROLLER VALVETRAIN, THE OTHER WITH A HYDRAULIC ROLLER. RIGHT NOW IT'S TIME FOR PAT AND I TO SHUT OUR TRAPS AND LET THESE GUYS DO THEIR MAGIC. WE'VE PROGRESSED TO THE TIMING SETS ON EACH OF THE SMALL BLOCKS, UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF BOTH INSTRUCTORS, AND SOON ENOUGH IT'S TIME FOR EACH TEAM TO START GETTING READY TO PUT THE HEADS ON. TEAM CHEVY IS GOING WITH LARGER INTAKE RUNNERS WHILE THE FORD GUYS ARE GOING FOR A NONCONVENTIONAL VALVE LAYOUT. ALL RIGHT SAM, YOU GUYS HAVE THE SHORT BLOCK PRETTY MUCH BUTTONED UP. NOW IT'S TIME TO MOVE UPSTAIRS TO THE TOP END. TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THESE CYLINDER HEADS YOU GUYS CHOSE.

(SAM)>> THE CYLINDER HEADS THAT WE DECIDED TO GO BACK WITH OUR 349 IS TRICK FLOW'S TWISTED WEDGE HEADS. THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS HAVE BEEN CNC'ED TO 58cc. OUR INTAKE IS TWOZERO-20, OUR EXHAUST IS AN INCH-600, AND OUR INTAKE RUNNERS ARE 170cc.

(DUSTIN)>> THESE ARE THE TRICK FLOW SUPER 23 DEGREE HEADS. THEY HAVE A 215cc INTAKE RUNNER, A 78cc EXHAUST RUNNER. THE INTAKE VALVE IS TWOZERO-80, THE EXHAUST VALVE IS ONE-600, AND IT'S GOT THESE 67cc COMBUSTION CHAMBER.

(PAT)>> VERY NICE FOR THE CHEVY. PUT THEM ON.

(MIKE)>> BOTH SETS OF HEADS ARE SECURED WITH ARP FASTENERS USING THEIR ULTRA TORQUE LUBE. THE 383 CHEVY COMBINATION IS GOING TO BE MAKING 10.13 TO ONE COMPRESSION, WHILE THE FORD WILL COME IN AT NINE POINT TWOFIVE TO ONE. WITH TIMING COVERS AND BALANCERS STARTING TO GO ON, BOTH OF THESE ARE LOOKING A WHOLE LOT MORE LIKE AN ENGINE.

AND NEXT UP ARE THE ROCKERS. BOTH TEAMS ARE RUNNING SUMMIT BRAND ALUMINUM BODIED ROLLER ROCKERS WITH THE CHEVY RUNNING A ONE POINT FIVE RATIO. NEXT UP IS GOING TO BE THE OILING SYSTEM WITH A HIGH VOLUME PUMP.

THE FORD ON THE OTHER HAND WILL CARRY A ONE POINT SIX RATIO ROCKER. PRETTY SOON THEY'VE GOT THEIR OIL PAN ON TOO, AND IT'S TIME FOR THE INTAKE. FOR THE CHEVY A HIGH RISE SINGLE PLANE AND A PAIR OF FABRICATED ALUMINUM VALVE COVERS. ON THE FORD IT'S ALSO A HIGH RISE SINGLE PLANE BUT THEY WENT WITH THE SHINY CAST ALUMINUM VALVE COVERS.

(MIKE)>> HEY EVERYBODY, WELCOME BACK. WE'RE OVER THE PENNZOIL UTI ENGINE CONTROL ROOM NOW. NOW BOTH TEAMS DID AN AWESOME JOB ASSEMBLING THEIR ENGINES. NOW COMES THE TIME FOR THE REAL COMPETITION. NOW NEITHER ONE OF THEM WANT TO GO FIRST. SO WE'RE GONNA DO A COIL TOSS. THE FORD TEAM GETS TO MAKE THE CALL. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GO, FIRST OR SECOND?

(KENT)>> SECOND.

(MIKE)>> ALL RIGHT.

(PAT)>> HEADS OR TAILS?

(KENT)>> HEADS.

(MIKE)>> LOOKS LIKE IT'S HEADS, WHICH MEANS THE CHEVY GUYS GOTTA GO FIRST. THE WINNING TEAM WILL BE THE PROUD RECIPIENT OF THIS SNAZZY TROPHY FABRICATED BY A UTI INSTRUCTOR. MAKING ALL THIS POSSIBLE IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PENNZOIL AND UTI. NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID, BOTH TEAMS HAVE TO RUN PENNZOIL ULTRA PLATINUM FULL SYNTHETIC ENGINE OIL, BUT THEY CAN CHOOSE THE WEIGHT OF THEIR CHOICE. NOW FOR FUEL SHELL VPOWER PUMP GAS IN 93 OCTANE HAS TO FEED BOTH ENGINES. NOW THIS OIL IS PRETTY IMPRESSIVE, ALL THE WAY FROM ITS DEVELOPMENT TO HOW WELL IT PROTECTS YOUR ENGINE. CHECK THIS OUT. PENNZOIL SYNTHETICS ARE MADE BY CONDENSING NATURAL GAS DOWN INTO A LIQUID, WHERE AS TRADITIONAL SYNTHETICS ARE REFINED FROM CRUDE OIL. WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT IT STARTS OUT WITH A MUCH CLEANER FOUNDATION, WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO HAVE A MUCH CLEANER END PRODUCT.

(MARK)>> 10 OR 15 YEARS AGO WE STARTED THINKING ABOUT BRAND NEW WAYS OF MAKING MOTOR OILS. THAT EXTRA PURITY THAT COMES OUT OF THAT PROCESS ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO WORK IN VERY DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE REGIMES, BUT IT ALSO HELPS TO MAKE THE ADDITIVES WE NORMALLY PUT INTO MOTOR OIL WORK EVEN BETTER, AND THAT'S A KEY PART OF WHY OEM'S COME TO US QUITE OFTEN TO LOOK AT THAT TECHNOLOGY.

(MIKE)>> WITH A LITTLE SHELL VPOWER NITRO PLUS GAS IN THE TANK, THEY CAN GET THAT CHEVY WHEELED INTO THE DYNO ROOM AND HOOK IT UP. BOTH TEAMS ALSO OPTED TO USE PENNZOIL ULTRA PLATINUM ZEROW-40 MOTOR OIL. A LITTLE PRIMING MAKES SURE THEY HAVE OIL ON ALL THE CRITICAL BEARING SURFACES, AND THEN IT'S TIME TO FIRE IT. [ engine starts and revs ]

(MIKE)>> SHE SOUNDS GREAT, AND THE FORD GUYS ARE LOOKING A LITTLE NERVOUS. THEY'LL GET IT UP TO TEMP AND CHECK THE TIMING. THEN SHUT HER DOWN AND RELASH THE VALVES, AND IT'S TIME FOR A PULL. [ engine revving ]

(MIKE)>> FIRST GO SHE MADE 442 HORSEPOWER.

(STEPHEN)>> GOT SOME CHECKING TO DO.

(MIKE)>> THEY'RE GONNA MAKE A TIMING ADJUSTMENT FIRST, ALONG WITH GIVING IT A LITTLE MORE FUEL. [ engine revving ]

(MIKE)>> THE CHEVY'S NOT MAKING THE POWER IT SHOULD BE, AND AFTER A GOOD AMOUNT OF DIGGING THEY DISCOVERED THAT THE THROTTLE WASN'T QUITE OPENING ALL THE WAY, WHICH IS A GAME CHANGER.

(PAT)>> MAKE HER COUNT ON THIS ONE, IT'S YOUR LAST ONE. [ engine revving ]

(MIKE)>> THAT MADE THE CHEVY COME TO LIFE AND CRANK OUT A RESPECTABLE 490 HORSE. THAT COMES OUT TO ONE POINT TWOEIGHT HORSEPOWER PER CUBE, BUT NOW IT'S TIME FOR THE FORD BOYS TO GET IN THE DYNO ROOM.

(PAT)>> ALL RIGHT, FORD TEAM'S READY TO MAKE A HIT. MIKE SAYS HE'S GOT 28 DEGREES OF TIMING IN IT. READY TO ROCK?

(MIKE)>> READY TO ROCK! [ engine revving ]

(PAT)>> LOOKS LIKE THE FORD MADE 459 HORSE ON ITS FIRST PULL, AND IF WE DO THE MATH AND DIVIDE 459 BY THE CUBIC INCHES, WHICH IS 349, WE GET ONE POINT THREEONEFIVE HORSEPOWER PER CUBIC INCH. SINCE THE CHEVY MADE ONE POINT TWOEIGHT, THAT MEANS THE FORD TEAM WINS. WELL IT WAS A HARD FOUGHT BATTLE AND BOTH TEAMS DID AWESOME, BUT NOW IT'S TIME TO HAND THE TROPHY PRESENTATION OVER TO TERRY FROM UTI.

(TERRY)>> WELL PAT I APPRECIATE THAT. IT'S BEEN A HARD FOUGHT CHALLENGE ALL WEEK LONG FOR THESE STUDENTS AND THESE INSTRUCTORS FROM UTI. IT WAS A BIT CHAOTIC FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, BUT MAN DID THEY ALL COME TOGETHER TO PUT TOGETHER SOME AMAZING ENGINES BUT IT'S TIME TO HAND OUT THE HARDWARE. SO AGAIN ON BEHALF OF SHELL, SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT, WE COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT THEM, AND OF COURSE OUR HOST CAMPUS, UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE RIGHT HERE IN LISLE, ILLINOIS. WE'VE GOT TO ANNOUNCE OUR WINNER AND THAT WINNER IS THE FORD TEAM. KENT EVANS, OBVIOUSLY SAMUEL EDWARDS THE THIRD. THESE ARE STUDENTS FROM UTI AND OF COURSE OUR INSTRUCTOR FROM UTI, MIKE PAIR. MIKE, CONGRATULATIONS, YOU GET THE HARDWARE, YOU GUYS GET TO CELEBRATE. ONCE AGAIN GOOD JOB FOR THE CHAMPIONS.

(MICHAEL)>> ALL RIGHT GUYS, GATHER IN THERE.

(PAT)>> IF YOU WERE GONNA DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT WHAT WOULD IT BE?

(MICHAEL)>> ABOUT THE ONLY THING I WOULD DO DIFFERENT WOULD BE MAYBE A LITTLE BIT BIGGER HEADS, A LITTLE HIGHER COMPRESSION, BUT OVERALL I'M PROUD OF WHAT THESE GUYS DID, HOW THEY DID IT, AND HOW IT ALL CAME TOGETHER.

HERE WE GO WITH ANOTHER ENGINE POWER TECH TIP, AND TODAY WE'RE GONNA BE DISCUSSING MORE CAM STUFF AND MIXING IN A LITTLE IGNITION TIMING. NOW LAST TIME WE WENT OVER THE CAM CARD WE DISCUSSED SOME BASICS OF LIFT AND DURATION. THIS TIME WE'RE GONNA BE DISCUSSING LOBE SEPARATION AND WHAT IT MEANS.

(MIKE)>> LOBE SEPARATION IS THE AMOUNT OF DEGREES BETWEEN THE INTAKE LOBE CENTER LINE AND THE EXHAUST LOBE CENTER LINE. NOW THIS IS THE ONLY MEASUREMENT ON THE CAM CARD THAT IS MEASURED IN CAM SHAFT DEGREES, NOT CRANK SHAFT DEGREES, AND WHY IS THAT? THE CAM SHAFT MOVES AT EXACTLY HALF THE SPEED OF THE CRANK SHAFT. FOR INSTANCE, IF I ROTATE THE CRANK SHAFT 360 DEGREES...

...THE CAM SHAFT ONLY MOVED 180.

(PAT)>> LIKE MIKE MENTIONED, THIS IS WHAT LOBE SEPARATION LOOKS LIKE. IT'S THE DISTANCE IN DEGREES FROM THE CENTER LINE OF THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST LOBES, AND IT'S AN IMPORTANT ASPECT OF CAM SHAFT DESIGN. LOBE SEPARATION DIRECTLY INFLUENCES OVERLAP, AND OVERLAP IS THE AMOUNT OF DEGREES BETWEEN THE EXHAUST VALVE CLOSING AND THE INTAKE VALVE OPENING, MEANING BOTH VALVES ARE SLIGHTLY OPEN AT THE SAME TIME. WELL WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AND WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT? WELL IT CREATES A SCAVENGING EFFECT ON NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINES, HELPING TO FILL THE CYLINDER ON THE UPCOMING INTAKE STROKE. THE SMALLER NUMBER, OR TIGHTER THE LOBE SEPARATION IS, THE MORE OVERLAP THE CAM SHAFT WILL, AND THAT IS USUALLY IN A RANGE OF 102 TO 110 DEGREES OF LOBE SEPARATION. ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE THE WIDER THE LOBE SEPARATION THE LESS OVERLAP THAT THE CAM SHAFT HAS, AND THAT IS IN A RANGE OF 111 TO OVER 120 DEGREES OF LOBE SEPARATION. NOW SOME CAM SHAFTS HAVE NO OVERLAP, BUT THOSE ARE USUALLY RESERVED FOR COMPUTER CONTROLLED VEHICLES, FORCED INDUCTION APPLICATIONS, AND HIGH END HIGH RPM RACE ENGINES.

(MIKE)>> THAT INFORMATION IS SUPPLIED BY SOME MANUFACTURERS AS A LOBE SEPARATION NUMBER. NOW OTHER MANUFACTURERS DON'T PUT IT ON THE CAM CARD AT ALL BUT THE INFORMATION IS STILL THERE. YOU JUST HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO DECIPHER IT. THEY PROVIDE THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST CENTER LINE AT THE LOBE'S MAXIMUM LIFT, WHICH ON THIS CAM SHAFT IS 110 ON THE INTAKE, 116 ON THE EXHAUST. YOU JUST ADD THESE TWO NUMBERS TOGETHER, WHICH IS 226. THEN DIVIDE THEM BY TWO. THIS PARTICULAR CAM SHAFT HAS A LOBE SEPARATION OF 113 DEGREES.

(PAT)>> WE HOPE THIS GETS YOU A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE AND A LITTLE MORE FAMILIAR WITH YOUR CAM CARD, AND WE MENTIONED MIXING IN SOME IGNITION TIMING. WELL WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH CAM SHAFTS? WELL EVERYTHING BECAUSE IT DETERMINES YOUR FIRING ORDER, AND IN THE FUTURE WE'LL DISCUSS STANDARD FIRING ORDERS VERSUS FIRING ORDER SWAPS FOR PERFORMANCE ENGINES, AND AS FOR TIME WELL WE'RE OUT OF IT. WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
