(JOEL)>> I KNEW AT A VERY YOUNG AGE THAT RACING WAS SOMETHING I'VE GROWN UP AROUND THAT I'VE LOVED THAT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A PART OF, AND HONESTLY WANTED TO HAVE A CAREER IN.
(PAT)>> LIKE JOEL AND KAYLEN, UNOH GIVES THE CAREER TOOLS FOR SUCCESS.
ALL THE LEARNING STARTS HERE, WHERE INSTRUCTORS WORK WITH SMALL GROUPS, NO MORE THAN 20 STUDENTS, TEACHING MACHINING PROCEDURES AND USING THE LATEST EQUIPMENT. IT'S ALL ABOUT HOW TO SETUP AND RUN BORING BARS, HOW TO CLEARANCE CYLINDERS, RESIZE CONNECTING RODS, ALIGN HONE BLOCKS, AND MACHINE AND REBUILD CYLINDER HEADS. AND PERFORMANCE ENGINES INCLUDE HOW TO BALANCE ROTATING ASSEMBLIES, CC COMBUSTION CHAMBERS, DEGREE CAM SHAFTS, AND FINAL ENGINE ASSEMBLY. STUDENTS THEN TUNE THOSE ENGINES IN THE
CAMPUS DYNO COMPLEX. A FIRST CLASS FACILITY THAT HAS HOSTED THE PRESTIGIOUS ENGINE MASTERS CHALLENGE FOR THE PAST NINE YEARS. WHILE STUDENTS LEARN THEORY IN CLASSROOMS, 70 PERCENT IS HANDS ON IN THE SHOPS DEDICATED TO EVERYTHING FROM ADVANCE WELDING TECHNIQUES ON EXOTIC MATERIALS, TO WORKING WITH FULLY EQUIPPED CHASSIS FAB SHOPS.
ANOTHER REALLY COOL SHOP IS THE 8,000 SQUARE FOOT ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION CENTER. HERE FUTURE TECHNICIANS LEARN HOW TO CUSTOMIZE, MAINTAIN, AND REPAIR ROBOTS, PREPARING THEMSELVES TO PROVIDE EXPERT
SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE LIFT OF A ROBOT, INCREASING ITS EFFICIENCY AND PROLONGING ITS USE IN THE AUTOMATED WORK PLACE. IN FACT, NOW UNOH EVEN OFFERS AN ASSOCIATES DEGREE IN ROBOTICS.
(JOSEPH)>> ORIGINALLY I WANTED TO BE AN ENGINEER AND THEN I JUST KINDA BACK TRACKED FROM THAT A LITTLE BIT AND DECIDED JUST WORK IN THE TECHNICAL FIELD, MORE THAN ENGINEERING.
AND YEAH, IT'S JUST THE FUTURE. SO THE JOB SECURITY IS THERE, AND THE DEMAND FOR ROBOTS IS

IN PROFESSIONAL RACING.

WE'VE GOT GUYS IN INDY CAR, DIRT RACING, YOU NAME IT WE'VE GOT UNOH GRADUATES AND ALUMNI ALL OVER THE PLACE, ITS' GREAT.
(PAT)>> ONE SPORT GRADUATES ARE FINDING A LIFE IN THE FAST LANE IS THE NHRA DRAG RACING. EVEN THOUGH THESE TOP FUEL MONSTERS MAKE OVER 10,000
HORSEPOWER, THE BASIC AUTOMOTIVE PRINCIPALS LEARNED AT THE SCHOOL ARE IN USE HERE. SO THESE GRADS ARE FITTING IN RIGHT AWAY WITH HIGHLY TRAINED
VETERANS OF THE SPORT.

THAT WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING IS ABSOLUTELY THE

(PAT)>> TODAY HE AND HIS TEAMMATES GIVE THEIR SHORT TRACK CARS FINAL PREP BEFORE LOADING THEM INTO THE TEAM'S FOUR RACE HAULERS TO COMPETE AT A PREMIERE LOCAL DIRT TRACK OWNED BY UNOH. FOR 82 YEARS LIMALAND MOTORSPORTS PARK HAS BEEN ONE OF THE COUNTRY'S TOP QUARTER MILE DIRT OVALS AND A FAN FAVORITE NASCAR HOME TRACK FOR THE WHELEN ALL AMERICAN SERIES. IN THE PITS, IT'S ALL BUSINESS AS THESE CARS GET UNLOADED AND READY TO RACE. ( )>> HE'S A RACING FAN.

BUMP THEM IN FOR POSITION AND CHARGING OUT IN EIGHT LAP HEATS, FOLLOWED BY THE FASTER MODIFIEDS, WITH DRIVERS TAKING EACH OTHER TO SCHOOL AND BUZZING THEIR SMALL BLOCKS TO 8,000, AND CLOCKING 15 SECOND LAP TIMES AT SPEEDS APPROACHING 100 MILES PER HOUR, A TRUE TEST BED
FOR THE STUDENT RACING.

(MIKE)>> GRAY HAIR, WHITE KNUCKLE HAS COME A LONG WAY FROM STOCK STATUS. NOW JUST LIKE ANY PROJECT, WE STILL HAVE A HANDFUL OF THE LITTLE THINGS TO GET WRAPPED UP. IN CASE YOU'RE JUST SEEING THIS BUILD FOR THE FIRST TIME. HERE'S A QUICK LOOK AT WHAT GOT IT TO THIS POINT. WE STARTED OUT BY BUILDING A GM LSA ENGINE, WHICH IS FOUND IN CADILLAC CTSV'S AND CAMARO'S. IT NOW PACKS 427 CUBIC INCHES AND HAD PORT WORK DONE TO THE STOCK HEADS AND SUPERCHARGER AT SAM TECH. IT IS A PUMP GAS ENGINE AND MAKES 15 POUNDS OF BOOST. IT CRANKED OUT 816 HORSEPOWER, AND 797 POUND FEET OF TORQUE ON A CONSERVATIVE TUNE.
(PAT)>> THEN WE DROPPED IT IN THE CAR, HOOKED UP A SIX SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, DID SOME SUSPENSION UPGRADES, AND INSTALLED A UNIQUE WHEEL AND TIRE CHOICE. FINALLY WE FIRED IT UP AND HEARD THE NOISE WE ALL LIKE TO HEAR.

(PAT)>> FINISHING IT WILL HAPPEN NOW, AND WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY, WEIGHT SAVINGS, AND QUALITY, QA ONE IS LEADING THE PACK IN THE DRIVESHAFT DEPARTMENT HANDS DOWN. THEY BUILT THIS BEAUTIFUL CUSTOM CARBON SHAFT FOR US THAT IS MUCH SAFER TO RUN THAN A STEEL OR AN ALUMINUM ONE, AND THESE ARE BUILT IN HOUSE USING STATE OF THE ART MACHINERY LIKE A FILAMENT WINDER, TENSILE TESTER, TORSIONAL DYNO, AMONG OTHER THINGS, AND THAT ALLOWS THEM TO CONTROL THE QUALITY AND MATERIALS THAT GO INTO THIS SHAFT.
(MIKE)>> A QA ONE EXCLUSIVE THREEM MATRIX RESIN IS USED TO PROVIDE INCREASED TORQUE CAPACITY AND LONGEVITY. NOW YOU WANT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE YOKES COMING LOOSE FROM THE SHAFT AT ALL. THEY DEVELOPED A PROPRIETARY 11 STEP PROCEDURE THAT UTILIZES HIGH STRENGTH STRUCTURAL ADHESIVE. TO FIND OUT MORE VISIT QA ONE'S WEBSITE. NOW WE NEED TO FIX A LITTLE ISSUE WE HAVE OUT BACK. NOW DUE TO THE CAR'S RIDE HEIGHT, AS WELL AS A UNIVERSAL
BRAKE KIT, THE INSIDE OF THE CALIPER IS
TOUCHING THE FRAME RAIL. SO TO FIX IT WE'RE GONNA RECLOCK THE ACTUAL CALIPER BRACKET, WHICH WILL MOVE THE CALIPER DOWN. WITH EVERYTHING OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN REMOVE THE BRACKET FROM THE HOUSING FLANGE. NOW SIMPLY REPOSITION THE FASTENERS IN THE OTHER SET OF HOLES. NOTICE HOW MUCH LOWER THE CALIPER MOUNTING TABS ARE NOW. NOW JUST PUT EVERYTHING BACK IN THE ORDER IT WAS REMOVED. INSTALL THE ROTOR...
...AND FINALLY THE CALIPER IN ITS NEW PLACE.
(PAT)>> WITH THE SPRINGS BACK IN, WE'LL USE SCREW JACKS TO RAISE THE REAR END TO RIDE HEIGHT SO WE CAN SET THE PINION ANGLE. PINION ANGLE IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ANGLE OF THE YOKE COMING OUT OF THE REAR END VERSUS THE DRIVESHAFT GOING TO THE TRANSMISSION. SO WHY IS PINION ANGLE IMPORTANT? WELL IF YOU HAVE DIFFERENT POWER LEVELS THEY REQUIRE DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF PINION ANGLE. THE LESS POWER THE ENGINE MAKES THE LESS IT TRIES TO ROTATE THIS DRIVELINE UP TOWARDS THE CENTER OF THE CAR. SO CARS LIKE THIS CAPRICE THAT HAVE 797 POUND FEET OF TORQUE REQUIRE MORE PINION ANGLE. SO WE'RE GONNA SET IT ACCORDINGLY. FIRST WE'LL MEASURE THE ANGLE OF THE YOKE, AND IT LOOKS LIKE
IT'S AROUND ZERO. SO WE'LL GO OVER HERE TO THE SHAFT, AND ONCE IT STABILIZES
IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S AROUND THREE DEGREES.
SO THAT MEANS WE HAVE THREE DEGREES OF DOWN ANGLE. NOW WE WANT TO INCREASE THAT TO AROUND FIVE OR SIX. SO WE HAVE TO DO SOME WORK ON THE UPPER AARMS. ADJUSTABLE UPPER CONTROL ARMS MAKE IT EASY FOR US TO ADJUST THE ANGLE. SIMPLY TURN THE ADJUSTOR IN EVEN INCREMENTS SO THE PINION
MOVES TOWARDS THE GROUND. THEN WE WILL CHECK THE ANGLE WITH THE ANGLE FINDER AGAIN. DO THIS UNTIL THE TARGETED ANGLE IS REACHED. ADDING THE TWO OPPOSING ANGLES TOGETHER READS FIVE AND A HALF DEGREES, AND THAT PUTS A FINAL TOUCH ON OUR DRIVELINE. WE'LL BE RIGHT BACK.
(MIKE)>> WE'RE BACK AND ONE MORE SMALL THING NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. IT'S SIMPLE AND JUST EXTRA INSURANCE WE DON'T RUN INTO ANY FUTURE PROBLEMS. WE'RE GONNA GO AHEAD AND WRAP THE POWER STEERING LINE WITH DEI'S REFLECTAGOLD. NOW THIS STUFF REFLECTS TEMPERATURES UP TO 850 DEGREES. IT'S SELF ADHESIVE, SIMPLY REMOVE THE BACKING AND WRAP IT AROUND THE LINE.

SO THAT MEANS WE HAVE THREE DEGREES OF DOWN ANGLE. NOW WE WANT TO INCREASE THAT TO AROUND FIVE OR SIX. SO WE HAVE TO DO SOME WORK ON THE UPPER AARMS. ADJUSTABLE UPPER CONTROL ARMS MAKE IT EASY FOR US TO ADJUST THE ANGLE. SIMPLY TURN THE ADJUSTOR IN EVEN INCREMENTS SO THE PINION
