Feel the roar of the 502. When our over the top S 10 truckie hits the trail, Ian does some mountain climbing and Chris little tree trimming.
Uh Let's see that one again.
Xtreme 4x4 starts now.
All right guys, this is it. It's the end of our over the top S 10 trie
project. We are so excited about getting this thing out of the shop and onto the trails. Honestly, I might wet myself a little bit. But seriously, this thing is a one of a kind truck. We have pushed the limits with this like we haven't done with any other project. This thing truly is half show car and half off Roader and to give you an example of taking care of the details. The first thing we're gonna install today is this switch panel that we got from 12 volt guy. We had them go ahead and load it up with green led s
and then painted the rocker covers to match the truck just to give this thing one more custom touch
hit the far left. That should be the spot. All right.
Yeah. And then the one right beside it's the two floods.
Oh,
and then the one over is the rock lights
nice.
All of our instrumentation is in one spot, the race pack UDX dash.
So give us everything we need to know what's going on under the hood so we can keep tabs on our 502.
And the Rockwell axle is incredibly strong if it has one drawback it, that it is also very, very heavy when you get them all built up with tires and wheels and all the after market goodies that we've put in ours, they can weigh in between 900
1000 pounds. Now, the downfall of that weight is when this axle comes off a ledge and droops out or worse comes out from underneath the truck and a roll over, all that weight is transferred into the shock. Now that 900 pound load on the shock shaft and the lower shock bolt can actually cause them to break and we don't want that to happen. So to keep that from happening, we're going to be installing these Mastercraft quad wrap limit straps. So these are four layers thick and they're fully sewn. Once we have these bolted up to the frame, when that suspension droops out, the weight will be taken by the strap, not by the shock.
Our upper mount will bolt right through our two by three frame.
Then the bottom will attach with a double sheer tab,
a high end rig like this needs some high end shafts.
We sent our measurements to the guys at high angle drive line service.
They specialize in off road shafts and suggested we run their 1410 series.
The larger 1410 U joint gives the shaft more strength
and can help prevent binding during axle articulation.
All of the fluid lines for our trie
came from crown performance and we had them do our steering lines as well as our brake lines. Now, we're gonna be running a complete braided brake line system on our truck and the Teflon inner core will help the pedal stay nice and stiff. One issue that people find when they run full braided brake system is the pedal can actually get a little bit spongy. But because the design of the crown lines that actually eliminates that from happening, you have no fear of running a full braided kit on
project. And the nice thing is they have these nice outer shields here that protect the line and they're available in a bunch of different colors. Now, our steering lines, the same thing, we got a straight up braided set from crown and these are all a dash six. Now, the reason we stepped up to the braided hose for this project is it looks good, but more importantly, it holds a lot more pressure since we're running the fluid all the way from the front of the truck to the back for the rear steer. It's just a good upgrade. For this project. Now, there's a bunch of different fittings that you're
to deal with when you're doing this type of installation and you really need to keep an eye on what needs thread ceiling and what doesn't a fitting that has a tapered nose for a brake line for a dash line to fit on. You don't need any ceiling on here. It'll actually leak if you put ceiling on there. Anytime you see an O ring, once again, you don't need sealant on that either because the O ring does the seal. And if you look inside the fitting that goes into your master cylinder and you see a taper on it, that taper is what actually seals the fitting, not thread seal, so you can leave it bare. But if you have a fitting with a tapered pipe thread on it and you'll actually see it get skinnier near the end, this needs thread ceiling or it will leak. Now, a lot of guys will go ahead and just reach for the lock tight white thread ceiling, which does work, but it's actually more designed for engine coolant and pipe ceiling. A better choice is to get the lock tight red thread ceiling. It's specifically designed for hydraulic fittings like a brake line set up in that way, it won't leak.
There's just two more things we have to take care of before we can call this truck done. And that is a front and rear windshield Now, we pulled the glass pieces out because we wanted to replace them with Lexan units and we picked up this front and rear window from Percy's high performance. Now, this is more than just regular Lexan.
This is what they call
speed glass. It's Lexan with a coating on it. So if you run windshield wipers on your project, it won't leave scratch marks on the window. And once we have these installed, this truck is gonna tear it up. Head out there. Conquer some hills, scare some trees. It's gonna be exciting.

when you're building a truck like our S 10 druggie. Occasionally there's going to be parts that you forget to have painted. Perfect example of that is the horn button for our steering wheel. We really wanted this to match the body color on our S 10. 1 option would be to carry this out to a body shop and have them apply the green color that's going to cost a lot of money. If you're working on a budget, believe it or not, you can do the same thing at home. You just have to pick up one of these universal spray gun kits you can get from any hardware store. It uses standard automotive paint and we had them mix this up a small court and then you just reduce it down in this small glass jar. You screw on the aerosol top and it works just like a regular can of spray paint.
Now, once it dries, you will want to apply a clear coat, but you can just pick that up in an aerosol can.
And when you're done, you have a quality automotive finish without the trip to the body shop.

Not bad considering all we started with was a wrecked cab rescued from the scrap yard
with images captured for our scrap book.
It was time to load it on the hauler.
We headed to Cookeville Tennessee where some of our wheeling buddies were green with envy.

This is the first time I've ever hooked up. All the hydraulic hoses jumped behind the wheel turned to the left and it went the right way
for a cab truck best I've seen in a long time. High horsepower rig just seems like it'll be a tear up any hill climb it gets up to.
I'm really looking forward to riding with it all day. I think it'll be fine. It's got that big black motor and the Rockwell axle.
It's gonna be a beast.
Let's go. Four wheeling. Yeah.
Golden Mountain. Ohb Park is a 500 acre property that was once a motor sports Mecca in East Tennessee.
It reopened this year and features 40 off road trails from mild
to wild.
The wheeling over here is, is second to none. The rock content, stuff like that.
You've got just rock after rock after rock,
uh, which makes great, you know, technical rock crawling.
Uh And anywhere you go, once you get past the soil, you're on the rocks.
The wheel base is just under 140 inches. And honestly, we were concerned getting through the trails would be tough,
but with the rear steering axle, if things start to get tight, you just have to steer out of it.
Now, a Rockwell axle is big
actually scratch that they're huge.
They're almost 80 inches wide on a track with and weigh in at just under 1000 pounds. But with that weight, we get strength. Now add to that the upgraded shafts that we put in these axles and we know whether we're crawling on rocks like this or hitting some serious hill climbs. We don't have to worry about any breakage.
The digressive valving in our bill Stein coil overs is specifically designed for trail riding and rock crawling.
They slowly eat up the rocks when crawling. But when they get a hard hit during a hill climb, the valving gets stronger to keep the shock from bottoming out
after the break. We'll hit the rev limiter.

Nothing bad is being spilled here
when four wheeling overheating is, are your worst enemy. And one of the first things that happen when
you're dealing with a big block and rock crawler. It's
in custom rig. It just, it's,
it's one of the first problems to conquer.
They think it's the radiator. I think it's out of batteries.
I need a cameraman humor.
Now, aside from the minor overheating issue, the truck worked really good, which we're really happy with because when you build a project like this from scratch to only have one problem on its debut run means a lot and it's an easy problem to fix. As you can see, we have the radiator package way in close to the cap and we think it's just reason
circulating the same hot air from the front side to the back side around the fuel cell. Now to diagnose this, we're going to unbolt the fuel cell and move it back up on the cage and just lean the radiator back and then just idle it right there and see if it keeps a common temperature. If it does. We'll build some new mounds for the radiator and get this thing back on the trail.
So we've had it running for over 30 minutes and we've got nowhere near 200 degrees. So we're pretty confident that our diagnosis was correct. It was all an airflow issue. So now what we have to do is build some new mounds for this fuel cell to keep it in this position as well as new mounds for the radiator to keep it lean back. Once we get that done, this truck will be back on the trail in no time.
This trail is called elevator.
It's the elevator to hell,
large slabs like this can be found all over Golden Mountain.
The key is to have lots of wheel spin and keep the motor rolling.

It's a long way up,
loose gravel at the bottom with serious power to climb it,
ending with the massive slab come off this obstacle rung and it's 100 ft to the bottom.
