(TOMMY)>> THAT'S RIGHT, WE'VE GOT OURSELVES A BRAND NEW 2017 FORD MUSTANG GT. NOW IT'S GOT THE PERFORMANCE PACK OPTION ON IT AND IT'S GOT THAT COYOTE UNDER THE HOOD, AND IT MAKES RIGHT AT 435 HORSE. SO THIS THING AIN'T NO JOKE.

(MARC)>> ALL RIGHT VAUGHN, LET'S START WITH THE SUSPENSION. WE'VE GOT A PERFORMANCE PACK CAR. SO IT'S ALREADY GOT THE STIFFER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS, BUT WHERE DO WE GO FROM THERE?
(VAUGHN)>> WELL TO SET THE BASE CHASSIS BALANCE WE'RE GONNA GO WITH THESE RTR TACTICAL PERFORMANCE ADJUSTABLE SWAY BARS. THESE BARS HAVE THREE WAY ADJUSTMENT FRONT AND REAR, AND DEPENDING UPON THE HOLES THAT YOU PUT THE END LINKS IN THAT WILL DEFINE WHETHER WE HAVE AN UNDERSTEER BALANCE, A NEUTRAL BALANCE, OR AN OVERSTEER BALANCE, AND THAT WILL BE CHOSEN BY WHATEVER KIND OF FUN THAT WE'RE TRYING TO HAVE. WE'VE ALSO CHOSEN TO GO WITH A SET OF BC RACING BR SERIES COIL OVERS. THE THINGS I REALLY LIKE ABOUT THESE COIL OVERS IS THEY'RE RIDE HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE, THEY COME WITH CAMBER PLATES, AND HAVE 30 CLICKS OF DAMPENING ADJUSTMENT FOR THAT FINE TUNING TO REALLY CONTROL THE BALANCE, AND THE SIDE TO SIDE, AND THE FORWARD TO BACK MOTIONS OF THE CAR. THE THING I LOVE ABOUT BC RACING COIL OVERS IS THAT THEY MAKE AN AMAZING KIT OFF THE SHELF FOR ANYONE, BUT IF YOU'RE PICKY AND YOU WANT TO FINE TUNE THEY WILL MAKE YOU CUSTOM SPRING RATES AND CUSTOM VALVING. WELL THIS SETUP ACTUALLY HAS TO BE CUSTOM. THIS IS A PROTOTYPE SET WITH OUR PROPRIETARY RTR VALVING AND OUR PROPRIETARY SPRING RATES. SO THIS CAR IS GONNA BE A BLAST. (MARC)>> WELCOME BACK. WE'RE TEAMING UP WITH POWERSTOP BRAKES TO BUILD THE ULTIMATE FORD MUSTANG, AND WE RECRUITED NONE OTHER THAN VAUGHN GITTIN JUNIOR TO GIVE US A HAND WITH SOME OF THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE ASPECTS OF THIS BUILD THAT WILL MAKE IT ROCK OUT ON THE STREET AND TRACK.
STARTING UP FRONT WE'LL REMOVE THE WHEEL AND TIRE, AND WE CAN WORK ON GETTING THIS CALIPER UNBOLTED AND TIED UP OUT OF THE WAY. THEN WE'LL GET RID OF THE ROTOR TOO.
THE SWAY BAR LINK CAN UNBOLT FROM THE STRUT, AND THE STRUT FROM THE SPINDLE. THESE BOLTS ARE SPLINED, SO THEY'LL NEED TO BE DRIVEN OUT WITH A PIN.
THE UPPER STRUT MOUNT CAN BE DETACHED FROM THE TOWER, AND THE ENTIRE STRUT ASSEMBLY CAN GO AWAY. THE SWAY BAR LINK NEEDS TO BE REMOVED COMPLETELY, AND ONCE IT'S OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN GET TO THE SWAY BAR MOUNTING BRACKETS AND THE BAR CAN BE FISHED OUT.
(TOMMY)>> THESE SWAY BARS COME WITH NEW URETHANE BUSHINGS THAT NEED TO BE LUBED UP BEFORE INSTALLATION. WITH THOSE ON WE CAN FISH THE NEW BAR IN THE SAME WAY THE OLD ONE CAME OUT.

THOSE TWO SPLINED BOLTS GET REUSED AND ATTACH THE STRUT TO THE SPINDLE. THE SWAY BAR LINK GETS ATTACHED AND TIGHTENED DOWN. WE'RE READY TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE BRAKES THAT WE'RE GONNA INSTALL ON OUR ULTIMATE MUSTANG. WE'VE GOT KRIS HERE FROM POWERSTOP BRAKES. WHAT ARE WE GONNA BE USING?
(KRIS)>> WELL SINCE THE GOALS FOR THIS CAR ARE FOR IT TO NOT ONLY BE HIGHLY DRIVABLE ON THE STREET BUT TO ALSO BE CAPABLE OF SOME SERIOUS PERFORMANCE DRIVING THIS IS THE KIT WE BROUGHT TODAY. IT'S OUR 2015-2017 MUSTANG TRACK DAY KIT FOR CARS WITH THE SIX PISTON CALIPERS. THIS CAR ALREADY HAS PERFORMANCE BRAKES ON IT FROM THE FACTORY, AND WE'RE JUST GONNA REPLACE THE CONSUMABLES TODAY. THE KIT COMES WITH THESE CARBON FIBER METALLIC TRACK DAY PADS, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO HAVE MORE BITE THAN THE OE PADS, AND THEY WON'T FADE EVEN UP TO 1,300 DEGREES. THE KIT ALSO COMES WITH THESE HIGH QUALITY OE SPEC ROTORS.
(VAUGHN)>> OF COURSE OUR MUSTANG CAME WITH BRAND NEW BRAKES, BUT THOSE ARE DEVELOPED FOR EVERYDAY USE. THIS TRACK DAY KIT IS GONNA HANDLE THE CRAZY ABUSE THAT I PLAN ON PUTTING THIS THING THROUGH, AND THESE ARE THE EXACT SAME PADS THAT I USE ON ALL OF MY TRACK CARS.
(KRIS)>> SINCE WE WANT TO GIVE THIS CAR AWAY IN THE END, AND THEY'RE PROBABLY GOING TO DRIVE IT LIKE A NORMAL HUMAN BEING, WE'RE GONNA INCLUDE ONE OF OUR Z-26 BRAKE KITS AS WELL, WHICH FEATURE OUR CARBON FIBER CERAMIC DUST FREE PERFORMANCE STREET BRAKE PADS, AND A SET OF OUR DRILLED, SLOTTED, AND ZINC COATED ROTORS, AND DON'T FORGET, ALL POWERSTOP KITS COME WITH BRAND NEW HARDWARE.
(MARC)>> THESE ROTORS ARE A DIRECT REPLACEMENT. SO THEY JUST SLIDE RIGHT ON, FOLLOWED BY THE STOCK CALIPER. WE'RE APPLYING A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE LUBE THAT CAME IN THE KIT TO THE BACK OF THESE PADS RIGHT WHERE THEY RIDE ON THE PISTONS. THEN THEY CAN JUST SLIDE RIGHT INTO THE CALIPER IN PLACE OF THE STOCK ONES, AND ATTACH USING THE FACTORY HARDWARE WITH A LITTLE MORE OF THAT BRAKE LUBE.
WELL THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL WE NEEDED TO DO TO THE FRONT. WE GOT THE SWAY BAR IN THERE, UPGRADED TO THE COIL OVERS, AND SWAPPED OUT THE PADS AND ROTORS FOR THAT POWERSTOP STUFF. NOW THE REAR ON THE OTHER HAND, THAT'S GONNA BE THAT STUFF AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. IT'S GONNA TAKE A LITTLE BIT MORE WORK. WE'RE GONNA TACKLE THAT NEXT, SO DON'T GO ANYWHERE.
(MARC)>> HEY EVERYBODY, WELCOME BACK. WE'RE BUSY WORKING ON OUR NEW 2017 MUSTANG GT THAT WE'RE BUILDING WITH POWERSTOP BRAKES AND VAUGHN GITTIN JUNIOR. WE JUST WRAPPED UP THE FRONT SUSPENSION AND WE MOVED ON TO THE REAR. NOW LIKE I SAID EARLIER, THIS REAR'S GONNA BE A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED, TAKE A FEW EXTRA PARTS THAN WE DID UP FRONT. THE REASON FOR THAT, IT HAS AN INDEPENDENT REAR SUSPENSION KNOWN AS AN IRS. THAT MEANS THIS REAR CENTER SECTION HERE IS MOUNTED TO A BIG CRADLE THAT HOLDS ALL OF THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS, AND THAT CRADLE IS MOUNTED TO THE BODY. NOW THERE ARE SOME RUBBER ISOLATORS IN THERE, AND THEY FLEX A LITTLE BIT, WHICH WE'RE GONNA ADDRESS WHILE WE'RE HERE, AND WE ALSO WANT TO UPGRADE THE SPRINGS, AND THE SHOCKS THAT WE SHOWED YOU EARLIER AS WELL AS THE SWAY BAR. WE'RE GONNA ATTACK THE AXLES AS WELL. WE'VE GOT SOME OF THOSE COMING, BUT IN ORDER TO GET ALL OF THAT DONE WE NEED TO DROP EVERYTHING OUT. THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO MOVE WILL BE THIS EXHAUST. WE'RE JUST REMOVING THE WHOLE EXHAUST ASSEMBLY HERE BEHIND THE RESONATOR, AND WE'LL SET IT ASIDE FOR NOW. THE DRIVESHAFT NEEDS TO COME OUT, AND THAT GEAR OIL NEEDS TO BE DRAINED FROM THE REAR DIFF.
THE REAR BRAKES HAVE TO BE DISASSEMBLED AND REMOVED, ALONG WITH THE BACKING PLATE.
THE SHOCK BOLTS CAN BE REMOVED AS WELL, AND THE SHOCK CAN GO AWAY. WE'LL SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A SCREW JACK AND BEGIN REMOVING SOME OF THE HARDWARE HOLDING THE SPINDLE IN PLACE, INCLUDING THE AXLE NUT.
WITH THE SPINDLE OUT AND THE SCREW JACK OUT OF THE WAY, THE AXLE WILL BE NEXT WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM A PRY BAR. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLTS HAVE GOT TO GO, AND THE SPRING FOLLOWS PRETTY EASILY. THAT LAST LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLT GETS REMOVED, ALONG WITH THE ARM AND THE TOE LINK. THE SWAY BAR NEEDS TO GO AS WELL, AND JUST DETACHES WITH THESE FOUR BOLTS. WITH A CART UNDER THE REAR CROSS MEMBER WE CAN REMOVE THE BOLTS ATTACHING IT TO THE UNIBODY, THE CAR CAN GO UP WITH THE LIFT, AND WE CAN WHEEL IT AWAY. WELL LIKE I SAID EARLIER, IT'S A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO WORK ON THIS THING WITH IT OUT OF THE CAR, AND WE'RE FINALLY AT THE POINT NOW WHERE WE CAN START PUTTING SOME OF THOSE NEW PARTS ON. TOMMY'S GONNA TELL YOU ABOUT THOSE. I'M GONNA GO GET SOME TOOLS.
(TOMMY)>> FIRST THING WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING ARE THESE SOLID BUSHINGS. NOW IT'S GONNA REPLACE THESE RUBBER ONES RIGHT UP THROUGH HERE, AND THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY MOUNT THE DIFF TO THE SUBSTRUCTURE. WE'RE ALSO GONNA BE INSTALLING A SET OF THESE UPGRADED AXLES FROM FORD PERFORMANCE. NOW THEY HAVE A LARGER DIAMETER OF THE AXLE SHAFT, SEVERE DUTY JOINTS, AND THESE BILLET STUB ENDS. NOW WE AIN'T READY TO PUT THEM IN, BUT WE ARE READY TO MAKE SOME NOISE. A SAW'S A MUST HAVE WHEN DOING THIS JOB, AND WITH THE CENTER CUT OUT WE CAN START WHITTLING AWAY AT THE OUTER PIECE. THE AIR CHISEL HANDLES THIS JOB WITH RELATIVE EASE. WE'RE USING SOME PERMATEX SLEEVE RETAINER ON OUR NEW SOLID BUSHINGS, AND GET'EM HAMMERED INTO PLACE. [ hammer tapping ]
(TOMMY)>> WITH ALL OF OUR BUSHINGS INSTALLED WE CAN LOWER THE CAR BACK ONTO THE CRADLE AND BOLT IT IN. WE'RE REINSTALLING EVERYTHING IN THE REVERSE ORDER IN WHICH IT WAS REMOVED, STARTING WITH THE LOWER CONTROL ARM.
THE AXLE CAN GO IN NEXT, FOLLOWED BY OUR SPRING THAT CAME WITH OUR SUSPENSION KIT.
WITH THE CONTROL ARM SUPPORTED, THE SPINDLE CAN GO IN, FOLLOWED BY THE SHOCK, WHICH GETS ATTACHED USING STOCK HARDWARE AND TORQUED TO SPEC. NOW WE CAN SLIDE IN THAT RTR SWAY BAR AND TORQUE IT.
IT ATTACHES TO THE SPINDLE USING THE STOCK LINK AND HARDWARE.
THE POWERSTOP ROTOR SLIPS INTO PLACE ALONG WITH THE CALIPER BRACKET. SOME OF THE POWERSTOP BRAKE LUBE GETS APPLIED AND THE PADS SLIP RIGHT IN.
THE CALIPER GOES ON NEXT AND CAN BE TIGHTENED ALONG WITH THE BRAKE HOSE BRACKET.
WE'RE TOPPING OFF THE REAR END WITH SOME ROYAL PURPLE GEAR OIL, AND WE'RE GOOD TO GO. HEY GUYS, WE DEFINITELY WANT TO SAY THANKS FOR LENDING A HAND ON OUR PROJECT HERE, BUT WE'VE STILL GOT A GOOD BIT OF WORK TO DO.

WE PUT IT UP HERE IN THE FRONT LOBBY OF OUR BUILDING. LATER JEREMY AND TRUCK TECH, HE BUILT US A SOFA TO MATCH OUT OF AN OLD '40'S ERA CADILLAC SEAT. SINCE THEN SOMEBODY ADDED AN END TABLE WITH AN OLD DRAG SLICK AND A PIECE OF GLASS. LOOKS PRETTY COOL, BUT IT STILL LOOKS A LITTLE DARK OVER THERE WE'VE GOT JUST THE THING FOR THAT, AND THE WAY WE'RE GONNA DO THAT IS WITH A LAMP. NOW TO MAKE THAT WE'RE GONNA USE AN OLD CAM SHAFT. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE ONE THAT CAME OUT OF THAT SMALL BLOCK CHEVY THAT WE USED TO MAKE THAT COFFEE TABLE A WHILE BACK. FIRST THINGS WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THIS THING STAND UP. NOW THE QUICKEST AND EASIEST WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS JUST BY USING THIS CAM GEAR THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BOLTED RIGHT HERE TO THIS CAM SHAFT, PART OF THE TIMING SET. I'LL JUST GET THE BOLTS BACK IN IT, AND THAT TAKES CARE OF THAT. NOW IT'S A LITTLE TOP HEAVY, BUT CONSIDERING THIS IS GONNA BE IN OUR LOBBY AND THERE'S NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC UP THERE, AND THERE'S NO KIDS AROUND TO KNOCK IT OVER, THIS'LL BE SUFFICIENT. SO WE WENT TO OUR LOCAL HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE AND THERE WE GOT THIS LAMP KIT. NOW IT COMES WITH THE WIRE, A SOCKET, SOME HARDWARE HERE, AND EVEN THIS BRACKET FOR THE LAMP SHADE, BUT WE'RE ONLY GONNA USE THE WIRE AND THE SOCKET. NOW TO HIDE THAT WIRE WE'VE GOT SOME DEI SPARK PLUG WIRE PROTECTION IN SILVER, AND I'LL DRESS IT UP A BIT. PROBABLY THE HARDEST PART ABOUT THIS ENTIRE PROJECT IS FIGURING OUT HOW TO MOUNT THIS SOCKET TO THE CAM SHAFT WHILE STILL ALLOWING SPACE FOR THE WIRE, WHICH IS GONNA COME OUT OF HERE, TO TRAVEL TO A LOCAL POWER SOURCE. NOW THIS LAMP KIT DOES COME WITH THIS LITTLE FITTING HERE, WHICH WE COULD SCREW IN HERE. I FOUND THIS LITTLE FITTING LAYING AROUND THE SHOP, AND IT'S KIND OF UGLY BUT I CAN GET IT CLEANED UP, AND IT'S FERROUS. SO I CAN WELD IT TO THE CAM SHAFT. WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS PIECE IS THAT FITTING AT THE TOP, WELL, IT'LL SCREW RIGHT INTO WHERE THIS FITTING WOULD NORMALLY SCREW INTO ON THE SOCKET, AND THIS HOLE WILL ALLOW OUR WIRE TO COME RIGHT OUT THE SIDE AND DOWN THE SHAFT, WHICH IS GONNA SAVE US A LOT OF WORK INSTEAD OF DRILLING THROUGH THE CAM SHAFT. WE'LL JUST GET THAT FITTING WELDED TO THE TOP, FOLLOWED BY SOME OF THESE SHORT PIECES OF TUBING THAT WE CUT. [ welder crackling ]
(MARC)>> WE'LL CLEAN UP THE WELDS WITH A WIRE WHEEL AND START FISHING THE POWER CORD THROUGH THAT DEI WIRE PROTECTOR. WE'LL CUT OFF THE EXCESS AND HEAT SHRINK IT TO THE END OF THE CORD.
THEN WE'LL FEED THAT WIRE ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH THOSE PIECES OF TUBING AND THROUGH THAT FITTING AT THE TOP. THE BASE TO OUR SOCKET SCREWS ON AND THE WIRES CAN BE ATTACHED TO THE SOCKET.
NOW WE JUST HAVE A REGULAR LAMP SHADE HERE, AND INSTALL THE BULB IN IT.
WELL OUR LOBBY'S FINISHED. WE'VE GOT AN ENGINE COFFEE TABLE, COOL SOFA, AND AN END TABLE WITH A LIGHT, AND IT SETS THE AMBIENCE, OR IS IT, THAT'S NOT IT, FENG SHUI. THAT'S THE WORD, WE'LL GO WITH THAT. IT SOUNDS CLASSY.
NOW A LOT OF YOU AT HOME, THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU BUY YOUR OLD MUSCLE CAR IS SWAP OUT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS FOR A SET OF HEADERS. WELL WHY? THESE ARE FACTORY EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY'RE PRETTY UGLY. THEY'RE HARD TO KEEP LOOKING NICE BECAUSE THEY ARE A CAST IRON, AND IF YOU WANT TO RAISE THE COOL FACTOR A LITTLE BIT YOU CAN GO WITH A SET OF THESE SHORTY HEADERS. THEY'RE PRETTY EASY TO INSTALL AND THEY'RE NOT REAL EXPENSIVE. YOU CAN JUST BOLT THEM RIGHT INTO PLACE OF YOUR FACTORY MANIFOLDS, AND TYPICALLY THE REST OF YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM WILL CONNECT RIGHT HERE TO THE COLLECTOR. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO MODIFY THAT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO REALLY RAISE THE COOL FACTORY YOU NEED TO GO WITH A SET OF LONG TUBE HEADERS LIKE THESE. THESE ARE ACTUALLY CERAMIC COATED AND A SET LIKE THIS ISN'T CHEAP. THEY'RE A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO INSTALL BECAUSE OF THE SHEER SIZE, AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE NEW LOCATION OF THE COLLECTOR YOU HAVE TO MODIFY THE REST OF YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM TO FIT THEM. WELL NOT ONLY DO THEY LOOK COOL AND SOUND COOL, BUT THEY'RE ALSO GONNA MAKE MORE POWER, BUT A LOT OF YOU AT HOME MIGHT NOT KNOW WHY.
(TOMMY)>> ON A FACTORY STYLE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THE PASSAGEWAYS ARE TYPICALLY A RUDIMENTARY DESIGN AND ARE SIMPLY THERE TO PROVIDE A ROUTE FOR THE EXHAUST GASES TO EXIT TOWARD THE TAIL PIPE. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT DUE TO THE TIMING OF THE EXHAUST PULSES THE COLLECTOR ON THE MANIFOLD CAN FORM A BOTTLENECK AND MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR YOUR ENGINE TO PUSH EXHAUST GASES THROUGH THE SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'VE MADE MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENGINE.
(MARC)>> A GOOD SET OF HEADERS ARE DESIGNED AROUND THE TIMING OF THE PULSES. NOT ONLY ARE THE PRIMARY TUBES MUCH LARGER, BUT EACH TUBE IS CALIBRATED WITH THE FIRING ORDER OF THE ENGINE ACCOUNTED FOR. THEY ALLOW THE PULSES TO PASS THROUGH THE COLLECTOR WITHOUT CREATING A BOTTLENECK, AND CAN EVEN PROVIDE THE ADDED BENEFIT OF A SMALL SCAVENGING EFFECT, WHICH PULLS THE SUCCEEDING PULSE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AFTER IT. TOGETHER THESE DIFFERENCE FREE UP THE EXHAUST FLOW, WHICH FREES UP MORE POWER. WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THAT SCAVENGING EFFECT IS THAT IT NOT ONLY APPLIES TO THE LONG TUBE HEADERS BUT IT ALSO APPLIES TO THESE SHORTIES. NOW IT'S JUST A LITTLE MORE PRONOUNCED ON THE LONG TUBES. NOW TYPICAL PRIMARY TUBE DIAMETER IS GONNA RANGE BETWEEN AN INCH AND THREE QUARTER AND TWO INCHES, AND THAT'S ON YOUR OUT OF THE BOX HEADERS, BUT IF YOU NEED SOMETHING BIGGER THAN THAT YOU CAN STEP UP TO A SET OF RACING HEADERS LIKE THESE. THESE ACTUALLY HAVE TWO AND THREEEIGHTHS INCH PRIMARY TUBES, AND THESE ARE WHAT YOU CALL A STEPPED HEADER, AND THEY STEP ALL THE WAY UP TO TWO AND A HALF INCHES, AND THIS COLLECTOR IS FOUR AND A HALF INCHES. (VAUGHN)>> WELL TO SET THE BASE CHASSIS BALANCE WE'RE GONNA GO WITH THESE RTR TACTICAL PERFORMANCE ADJUSTABLE SWAY BARS. THESE BARS HAVE THREE WAY ADJUSTMENT FRONT AND REAR, AND DEPENDING UPON THE HOLES THAT YOU PUT THE END LINKS IN THAT WILL DEFINE WHETHER WE HAVE AN UNDERSTEER BALANCE, A NEUTRAL BALANCE, OR AN OVERSTEER BALANCE, AND THAT WILL BE CHOSEN BY WHATEVER KIND OF FUN THAT WE'RE TRYING TO HAVE. WE'VE ALSO CHOSEN TO GO WITH A SET OF BC RACING BR SERIES COIL OVERS. THE THINGS I REALLY LIKE ABOUT THESE COIL OVERS IS THEY'RE RIDE HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE, THEY COME WITH CAMBER PLATES, AND HAVE 30 CLICKS OF DAMPENING ADJUSTMENT FOR THAT FINE TUNING TO REALLY CONTROL THE BALANCE, AND THE SIDE TO SIDE, AND THE FORWARD TO BACK MOTIONS OF THE CAR. STARTING UP FRONT WE'LL REMOVE THE WHEEL AND TIRE, AND WE CAN WORK ON GETTING THIS CALIPER UNBOLTED AND TIED UP OUT OF THE WAY. THEN WE'LL GET RID OF THE ROTOR TOO.
THE SWAY BAR LINK CAN UNBOLT FROM THE STRUT, AND THE STRUT FROM THE SPINDLE. THESE BOLTS ARE SPLINED, SO THEY'LL NEED TO BE DRIVEN OUT WITH A PIN.
THE UPPER STRUT MOUNT CAN BE DETACHED FROM THE TOWER, AND THE ENTIRE STRUT ASSEMBLY CAN GO AWAY. THE SWAY BAR LINK NEEDS TO BE REMOVED COMPLETELY, AND ONCE IT'S OUT OF THE WAY WE CAN GET TO THE SWAY BAR MOUNTING BRACKETS AND THE BAR CAN BE FISHED OUT.

THE KIT COMES WITH THESE CARBON FIBER METALLIC TRACK DAY PADS, WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO HAVE MORE BITE THAN THE OE PADS, AND THEY WON'T FADE EVEN UP TO 1,300 DEGREES. WE'RE APPLYING A SMALL AMOUNT OF BRAKE LUBE THAT CAME IN THE KIT TO THE BACK OF THESE PADS RIGHT WHERE THEY RIDE ON THE PISTONS. THEN THEY CAN JUST SLIDE RIGHT INTO THE CALIPER IN PLACE OF THE STOCK ONES, AND ATTACH USING THE FACTORY HARDWARE WITH A LITTLE MORE OF THAT BRAKE LUBE.
WELL THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL WE NEEDED TO DO TO THE FRONT. WE GOT THE SWAY BAR IN THERE, UPGRADED TO THE COIL OVERS, AND SWAPPED OUT THE PADS AND ROTORS FOR THAT POWERSTOP STUFF. NOW THE REAR ON THE OTHER HAND, THAT'S GONNA BE THAT STUFF AND A WHOLE LOT MORE. IT'S GONNA TAKE A LITTLE BIT MORE WORK. WE'RE GONNA TACKLE THAT NEXT, SO DON'T GO ANYWHERE.
(MARC)>> HEY EVERYBODY, WELCOME BACK. WE'RE BUSY WORKING ON OUR NEW 2017 MUSTANG GT THAT WE'RE BUILDING WITH POWERSTOP BRAKES AND VAUGHN GITTIN JUNIOR. WE JUST WRAPPED UP THE FRONT SUSPENSION AND WE MOVED ON TO THE REAR. NOW LIKE I SAID EARLIER, THIS REAR'S GONNA BE A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED, TAKE A FEW EXTRA PARTS THAN WE DID UP FRONT. THE REASON FOR THAT, IT HAS AN INDEPENDENT REAR SUSPENSION KNOWN AS AN IRS. THAT MEANS THIS REAR CENTER SECTION HERE IS MOUNTED TO A BIG CRADLE THAT HOLDS ALL OF THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS, AND THAT CRADLE IS MOUNTED TO THE BODY. NOW THERE ARE SOME RUBBER ISOLATORS IN THERE, AND THEY FLEX A LITTLE BIT, WHICH WE'RE GONNA ADDRESS WHILE WE'RE HERE, AND WE ALSO WANT TO UPGRADE THE SPRINGS, AND THE SHOCKS THAT WE SHOWED YOU EARLIER AS WELL AS THE SWAY BAR. WE'RE GONNA ATTACK THE AXLES AS WELL. WE'VE GOT SOME OF THOSE COMING, BUT IN ORDER TO GET ALL OF THAT DONE WE NEED TO DROP EVERYTHING OUT. THE FIRST THING WE NEED TO MOVE WILL BE THIS EXHAUST. WE'RE JUST REMOVING THE WHOLE EXHAUST ASSEMBLY HERE BEHIND THE RESONATOR, AND WE'LL SET IT ASIDE FOR NOW. THE DRIVESHAFT NEEDS TO COME OUT, AND THAT GEAR OIL NEEDS TO BE DRAINED FROM THE REAR DIFF.
THE REAR BRAKES HAVE TO BE DISASSEMBLED AND REMOVED, ALONG WITH THE BACKING PLATE.
THE SHOCK BOLTS CAN BE REMOVED AS WELL, AND THE SHOCK CAN GO AWAY. WE'LL SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A SCREW JACK AND BEGIN REMOVING SOME OF THE HARDWARE HOLDING THE SPINDLE IN PLACE, INCLUDING THE AXLE NUT.
WITH THE SPINDLE OUT AND THE SCREW JACK OUT OF THE WAY, THE AXLE WILL BE NEXT WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM A PRY BAR. THE LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLTS HAVE GOT TO GO, AND THE SPRING FOLLOWS PRETTY EASILY. THAT LAST LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLT GETS REMOVED, ALONG WITH THE ARM AND THE TOE LINK. THE SWAY BAR NEEDS TO GO AS WELL, AND JUST DETACHES WITH THESE FOUR BOLTS. WITH A CART UNDER THE REAR CROSS MEMBER WE CAN REMOVE THE BOLTS ATTACHING IT TO THE UNIBODY, THE CAR CAN GO UP WITH THE LIFT, AND WE CAN WHEEL IT AWAY. WELL LIKE I SAID EARLIER, IT'S A WHOLE LOT EASIER TO WORK ON THIS THING WITH IT OUT OF THE CAR, AND WE'RE FINALLY AT THE POINT NOW WHERE WE CAN START PUTTING SOME OF THOSE NEW PARTS ON. TOMMY'S GONNA TELL YOU ABOUT THOSE. I'M GONNA GO GET SOME TOOLS.

NOW IT'S GONNA REPLACE THESE RUBBER ONES RIGHT UP THROUGH HERE, AND THE ONES THAT ACTUALLY MOUNT THE DIFF TO THE SUBSTRUCTURE. WE'RE ALSO GONNA BE INSTALLING A SET OF THESE UPGRADED AXLES FROM FORD PERFORMANCE. NOW THEY HAVE A LARGER DIAMETER OF THE AXLE SHAFT, SEVERE DUTY JOINTS, AND THESE BILLET STUB ENDS. NOW WE AIN'T READY TO PUT THEM IN, BUT WE ARE READY TO MAKE SOME NOISE. A SAW'S A MUST HAVE WHEN DOING THIS JOB, AND WITH THE CENTER CUT OUT WE CAN START WHITTLING AWAY AT THE OUTER PIECE. (TOMMY)>> WITH ALL OF OUR BUSHINGS INSTALLED WE CAN LOWER THE CAR BACK ONTO THE CRADLE AND BOLT IT IN. WE'RE REINSTALLING EVERYTHING IN THE REVERSE ORDER IN WHICH IT WAS REMOVED, STARTING WITH THE LOWER CONTROL ARM.
THE AXLE CAN GO IN NEXT, FOLLOWED BY OUR SPRING THAT CAME WITH OUR SUSPENSION KIT.
WITH THE CONTROL ARM SUPPORTED, THE SPINDLE CAN GO IN, FOLLOWED BY THE SHOCK, WHICH GETS ATTACHED USING STOCK HARDWARE AND TORQUED TO SPEC. NOW WE CAN SLIDE IN THAT RTR SWAY BAR AND TORQUE IT.
IT ATTACHES TO THE SPINDLE USING THE STOCK LINK AND HARDWARE.
THE POWERSTOP ROTOR SLIPS INTO PLACE ALONG WITH THE CALIPER BRACKET. SOME OF THE POWERSTOP BRAKE LUBE GETS APPLIED AND THE PADS SLIP RIGHT IN.
THE CALIPER GOES ON NEXT AND CAN BE TIGHTENED ALONG WITH THE BRAKE HOSE BRACKET.
WE'RE TOPPING OFF THE REAR END WITH SOME ROYAL PURPLE GEAR OIL, AND WE'RE GOOD TO GO. HEY GUYS, WE DEFINITELY WANT TO SAY THANKS FOR LENDING A HAND ON OUR PROJECT HERE, BUT WE'VE STILL GOT A GOOD BIT OF WORK TO DO.

WE PUT IT UP HERE IN THE FRONT LOBBY OF OUR BUILDING. LATER JEREMY AND TRUCK TECH, HE BUILT US A SOFA TO MATCH OUT OF AN OLD '40'S ERA CADILLAC SEAT. SINCE THEN SOMEBODY ADDED AN END TABLE WITH AN OLD DRAG SLICK AND A PIECE OF GLASS. LOOKS PRETTY COOL, BUT IT STILL LOOKS A LITTLE DARK OVER THERE WE'VE GOT JUST THE THING FOR THAT, AND THE WAY WE'RE GONNA DO THAT IS WITH A LAMP. NOW TO MAKE THAT WE'RE GONNA USE AN OLD CAM SHAFT. THIS IS ACTUALLY THE ONE THAT CAME OUT OF THAT SMALL BLOCK CHEVY THAT WE USED TO MAKE THAT COFFEE TABLE A WHILE BACK. FIRST THINGS WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THIS THING STAND UP. NOW THE QUICKEST AND EASIEST WAY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS JUST BY USING THIS CAM GEAR THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN BOLTED RIGHT HERE TO THIS CAM SHAFT, PART OF THE TIMING SET. I'LL JUST GET THE BOLTS BACK IN IT, AND THAT TAKES CARE OF THAT. NOW IT'S A LITTLE TOP HEAVY, BUT CONSIDERING THIS IS GONNA BE IN OUR LOBBY AND THERE'S NOT A LOT OF TRAFFIC UP THERE, AND THERE'S NO KIDS AROUND TO KNOCK IT OVER, THIS'LL BE SUFFICIENT. SO WE WENT TO OUR LOCAL HOME IMPROVEMENT STORE AND THERE WE GOT THIS LAMP KIT. NOW IT COMES WITH THE WIRE, A SOCKET, SOME HARDWARE HERE, AND EVEN THIS BRACKET FOR THE LAMP SHADE, BUT WE'RE ONLY GONNA USE THE WIRE AND THE SOCKET. NOW TO HIDE THAT WIRE WE'VE GOT SOME DEI SPARK PLUG WIRE PROTECTION IN SILVER, AND I'LL DRESS IT UP A BIT. PROBABLY THE HARDEST PART ABOUT THIS ENTIRE PROJECT IS FIGURING OUT HOW TO MOUNT THIS SOCKET TO THE CAM SHAFT WHILE STILL ALLOWING SPACE FOR THE WIRE, WHICH IS GONNA COME OUT OF HERE, TO TRAVEL TO A LOCAL POWER SOURCE. NOW THIS LAMP KIT DOES COME WITH THIS LITTLE FITTING HERE, WHICH WE COULD SCREW IN HERE. I FOUND THIS LITTLE FITTING LAYING AROUND THE SHOP, AND IT'S KIND OF UGLY BUT I CAN GET IT CLEANED UP, AND IT'S FERROUS. SO I CAN WELD IT TO THE CAM SHAFT. WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THIS PIECE IS THAT FITTING AT THE TOP, WELL, IT'LL SCREW RIGHT INTO WHERE THIS FITTING WOULD NORMALLY SCREW INTO ON THE SOCKET, AND THIS HOLE WILL ALLOW OUR WIRE TO COME RIGHT OUT THE SIDE AND DOWN THE SHAFT, WHICH IS GONNA SAVE US A LOT OF WORK INSTEAD OF DRILLING THROUGH THE CAM SHAFT. WE'LL JUST GET THAT FITTING WELDED TO THE TOP, FOLLOWED BY SOME OF THESE SHORT PIECES OF TUBING THAT WE CUT. [ welder crackling ]
(MARC)>> WE'LL CLEAN UP THE WELDS WITH A WIRE WHEEL AND START FISHING THE POWER CORD THROUGH THAT DEI WIRE PROTECTOR. WE'LL CUT OFF THE EXCESS AND HEAT SHRINK IT TO THE END OF THE CORD.
THEN WE'LL FEED THAT WIRE ALL THE WAY UP THROUGH THOSE PIECES OF TUBING AND THROUGH THAT FITTING AT THE TOP. THE BASE TO OUR SOCKET SCREWS ON AND THE WIRES CAN BE ATTACHED TO THE SOCKET.
NOW WE JUST HAVE A REGULAR LAMP SHADE HERE, AND INSTALL THE BULB IN IT.
WELL OUR LOBBY'S FINISHED. WE'VE GOT AN ENGINE COFFEE TABLE, COOL SOFA, AND AN END TABLE WITH A LIGHT, AND IT SETS THE AMBIENCE, OR IS IT, THAT'S NOT IT, FENG SHUI. THAT'S THE WORD, WE'LL GO WITH THAT. IT SOUNDS CLASSY.
NOW A LOT OF YOU AT HOME, THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU BUY YOUR OLD MUSCLE CAR IS SWAP OUT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS FOR A SET OF HEADERS. WELL WHY? THESE ARE FACTORY EXHAUST MANIFOLDS, AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THEY'RE PRETTY UGLY. THEY'RE HARD TO KEEP LOOKING NICE BECAUSE THEY ARE A CAST IRON, AND IF YOU WANT TO RAISE THE COOL FACTOR A LITTLE BIT YOU CAN GO WITH A SET OF THESE SHORTY HEADERS. THEY'RE PRETTY EASY TO INSTALL AND THEY'RE NOT REAL EXPENSIVE. YOU CAN JUST BOLT THEM RIGHT INTO PLACE OF YOUR FACTORY MANIFOLDS, AND TYPICALLY THE REST OF YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM WILL CONNECT RIGHT HERE TO THE COLLECTOR. SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO MODIFY THAT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO REALLY RAISE THE COOL FACTORY YOU NEED TO GO WITH A SET OF LONG TUBE HEADERS LIKE THESE. THESE ARE ACTUALLY CERAMIC COATED AND A SET LIKE THIS ISN'T CHEAP. THEY'RE A LOT MORE DIFFICULT TO INSTALL BECAUSE OF THE SHEER SIZE, AND ALSO BECAUSE OF THE NEW LOCATION OF THE COLLECTOR YOU HAVE TO MODIFY THE REST OF YOUR EXHAUST SYSTEM TO FIT THEM. WELL NOT ONLY DO THEY LOOK COOL AND SOUND COOL, BUT THEY'RE ALSO GONNA MAKE MORE POWER, BUT A LOT OF YOU AT HOME MIGHT NOT KNOW WHY.
(TOMMY)>> ON A FACTORY STYLE EXHAUST MANIFOLD THE PASSAGEWAYS ARE TYPICALLY A RUDIMENTARY DESIGN AND ARE SIMPLY THERE TO PROVIDE A ROUTE FOR THE EXHAUST GASES TO EXIT TOWARD THE TAIL PIPE. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT DUE TO THE TIMING OF THE EXHAUST PULSES THE COLLECTOR ON THE MANIFOLD CAN FORM A BOTTLENECK AND MAKE IT MORE DIFFICULT FOR YOUR ENGINE TO PUSH EXHAUST GASES THROUGH THE SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU'VE MADE MODIFICATIONS TO THE ENGINE.
(MARC)>> A GOOD SET OF HEADERS ARE DESIGNED AROUND THE TIMING OF THE PULSES. NOT ONLY ARE THE PRIMARY TUBES MUCH LARGER, BUT EACH TUBE IS CALIBRATED WITH THE FIRING ORDER OF THE ENGINE ACCOUNTED FOR. THEY ALLOW THE PULSES TO PASS THROUGH THE COLLECTOR WITHOUT CREATING A BOTTLENECK, AND CAN EVEN PROVIDE THE ADDED BENEFIT OF A SMALL SCAVENGING EFFECT, WHICH PULLS THE SUCCEEDING PULSE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AFTER IT. TOGETHER THESE DIFFERENCE FREE UP THE EXHAUST FLOW, WHICH FREES UP MORE POWER. WHAT'S GREAT ABOUT THAT SCAVENGING EFFECT IS THAT IT NOT ONLY APPLIES TO THE LONG TUBE HEADERS BUT IT ALSO APPLIES TO THESE SHORTIES. NOW IT'S JUST A LITTLE MORE PRONOUNCED ON THE LONG TUBES. NOW TYPICAL PRIMARY TUBE DIAMETER IS GONNA RANGE BETWEEN AN INCH AND THREE QUARTER AND TWO INCHES, AND THAT'S ON YOUR OUT OF THE BOX HEADERS, BUT IF YOU NEED SOMETHING BIGGER THAN THAT YOU CAN STEP UP TO A SET OF RACING HEADERS LIKE THESE. THESE ACTUALLY HAVE TWO AND THREEEIGHTHS INCH PRIMARY TUBES, AND THESE ARE WHAT YOU CALL A STEPPED HEADER, AND THEY STEP ALL THE WAY UP TO TWO AND A HALF INCHES, AND THIS COLLECTOR IS FOUR AND A HALF INCHES. WAY BIGGER THAN MOST OF US NEED ON OUR STREET CARS, BUT IF YOU NEED THEM MAKE THEM THAT BIG.
