This Couple Moved From New Zealand to The U.K. With Only Their Toyota Land Cruiser

Talk about packing lightly and efficiently! A British accountant decided to return home to the U.K. after living in New Zealand for several years. And he decided he just couldn’t leave without his girlfriend and his Toyota Land Cruiser.

So Joss Quilty and Romy Romagnoli spent the next 10 months traveling the 25,000 (ish) miles across Oceana, Asia, and Europe.

There were already plenty of miles on the 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser but the SUV is legendarily reliable and easy to maintain. So Quilty outfitted it for adventure, with all-terrain tires, off-road auxiliary lighting, an air intake snorkel, and winch and headed out on the road.

Of course, they couldn’t drive the ENTIRE trip so when they got to port, the car was shipped to Malaysia where the road trip really began. They passed through Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Iran before crossing into Europe.

Once in Europe, they passed through Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Italy, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, France and across the water once more to reach their final destination of Thornbury, U.K.

Not only did they save money on airfare, but the couple was budget-conscious the whole trip.

“Our budget was very tight for the whole trip. We tried to sleep in the vehicle the whole way, with mattresses in the back,” Quilty said.

They ended the trip by getting engaged! While this may have been their biggest journey, they hope to be on the road again soon.
