Some Of The Best Automotive Commercials From The Big Game

For some people, the commercials during the Big Game are just as (if not more) entertaining than the game itself. Every year there is speculation as to which company can come up with the funniest, coolest, or most heart-felt ad.

The spots during the game are so coveted that it cost up to $5.6 million for a 30-second slot in 2020. Needless to say automakers that shell out the coin are hoping for a big reaction, and sales to follow.

The pandemic has put a twist on things for 2021, however. There will be fewer big-brand commercials airing during the game and even fewer automotive spots.

In fact, only a few brands are actually running ads. GM will run a spot featuring Will Ferrel and Ford, although running an ad has focused its attention on COVID-19 and encouraging Americans to pull together to protect themselves. Other automakers such as Kia and Hyundai who normally have spots have pulled out.

The New York Times talked to Bill Oberlander, co-founder and executive creative of ad agency Oberland, who said, “There is trepidation around Super Bowl advertising this year. For the Super Bowl, you generally go big or go home. I think brands are going home rather than spending tens of millions of dollars and not getting it right. They’re saying, ‘Let’s wait until this s—storm clears.’”

Being that there are few to look forward to, we thought we’d take a look back at a few of the best over the years. In no particular order, here are our Top 10:

Almost as relatable in 2020 as it was in 2012, this Chevy commercial featuring the Silverado enduring the Apocalypse aired.

In 2019, Audi put out an ad we can sympathize with – who doesn’t daydream about a new car?

This one caused some controversy. Jeep faced some backlash after “Killing A Unicorn” in this 2019 Super Bowl Commercial promoting the Gladiator.

Chevy provided a good laugh with the “Happy Grad” commercial. Poor kid thought he got a Camaro, ended up with a mini fridge.

Just last year, Porsche put out “The Heist” which promoted the electric Taycan.

This more traditional, all-American spot featuring Bob Dylan and the Chrysler 200 aired in 2014.

Speaking of America and feel-good commercials, Dodge and it’s ad from 2013 pays respect to farmers everywhere.

Keeping with the patriotic theme, Clint Eastwood voiced a commercial for Chrysler in 2012 which could easily be applied to today’s America.

Switching over to humor, Kevin Hart speaks for dad’s everywhere during Hyundai’s 2016 “First Date” ad.

And last but not least, arguably one of the best commercials in general is the 2011 Volkswagen spot featuring a kid and his dad’s Passat.

Obviously, these are just a few great car commercials we’ve remembered over the years. Have a favorite? Link it in the comments!
