Only One Pickup Truck Has Increased In Sales Since 2021, and It Isn’t Ford or Chevy

Who doesn’t love a pickup truck? They are some of the most popular vehicles for the biggest automakers in the world like Ford, Chevrolet, and Ram. In 2021 almost 1.5 million pickup trucks were sold, but these three automakers have started to see declines in pickup truck sales in 2022. The only one to see an increase in sales since 2021 belongs to Toyota’s new Tundra.

Why is this? The new Tundra is the first of a new generation as Toyota had stayed with the previous generation truck for 14 years with a few minor tweaks. As soon as Toyota debuted its new Tundra, many loyal fans got in line to take home the new pickup.

Another reason could be due to the fact that the 2023 Tundra offers the 437 hp i-Force Max hybrid engine. According to Toyota, the hybrid version took up approximately 20 percent of all Tundra sales in July 2022.

A third reason may also be due to many automakers still being plagued by supply chain problems. Truck production has definitely suffered for many of the major automakers, as the Ram 1500 has been down 18 percent, the GMC Sierra has been down 15 percent, 11 percent for the Chevy Silverado, and 10 percent for Ford F-150s.

From January through August of 2022, Toyota has sold over 64,000 Tundras, which is a 15 percent increase compared to its sales in 2021. Although the Toyota Tundra’s sales have certainly seen an increase, it is still a few slots behind some of the other major truck producers. Nonetheless, it is a step in the right direction for the Tundra.
