Drones Will Now Be Shot Down At Texas NASCAR Events
With drones becoming increasingly popular as a way to get awesome images and video, there are new ways of protecting your events, property, and spectators being invented. One of the newest is a device looks like oversized cosplay weapons but which actually remotely disable UAVs from Droneshield.
Gizmodo reports that NASCAR has contracted with the company for races held at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, which hosts many of the racing league’s events like the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
Basically, the company is hired to prevent pilots from endangering audience members or drivers. The last thing you want is an illegal drone falling from the sky landing on a driver or person in the crowd. Aside from safety concerns, we imagine NASCAR is trying to keep the streaming and recorded video to a minimum for their paying platforms like cable tv networks.
In a press release from the company they explained how the system works:
“DroneSentinel, a static array of sensors that detects incoming drones; DroneSentry, which is similar but incorporates countermeasures; and DroneGun, the portable version that looks like a sci-fi rifle. Company CEO Oleg Vornik told TechCrunch in a statement that as far as he’s aware, it is the first “live operational use” by police of all three components of the system in the US.”
