How To Diagnose and Repair a Gauge Cluster

Learning how to diagnose and repair a gauge cluster is a valuable skill for any car enthusiast experiencing electrical failures. With the engine running, you may notice that some components like the oil pressure and fuel level gauges work, while the TAC, voltmeter, and water temp gauges fail to move. These dead gauges and bulbs often trace back to simple electrical path issues behind your dashboard. By walking through a systematic test process, you can find the source of the failure and fix it yourself.

Voltmeter Voltage And Ground Diagnosis

To begin your troubleshooting, start with the voltmeter because it is the simplest to diagnose. As long as you have system voltage going into the voltmeter and a ground connection on the other side, it should function correctly. Grab your meter and test pin number eight, which is the green and yellow wire that acts as the battery or system voltage point. Your meter should read around 12.38 volts to confirm you are receiving power.

After checking the voltage, you must test the ground side. Switch your meter over to a continuity test. Attach the other lead to a good, known chassis ground and complete the test. If you have a good connection, the problem is officially isolated to the instrument cluster itself.

Circuit Board Trace Inspection

Now that you know the issue lies within the cluster, take a closer look at the back of the assembly. On the back of the instrument cluster is the printed circuit, which is the circuit board for the instrument cluster. You will see several squiggly lines on the back. These lines are called traces, and they are what carry the electrical current to your bulbs or gauges.

A good trace is supposed to look like a flattened copper wire laminated in plastic. When inspecting your board, you might notice some traces with visible problems. These damaged sections create a definite continuity issue. Look specifically for a damaged trace that acts as the main power supply, as this will prevent many of your bulbs from functioning.

Jumper Wire Trace Repair

To fix these traces, you have a few different options. None of them are that complicated. You are just trying to complete the circuit where it is partially damaged. If there is no continuity between two terminals, you have a dead spot in the trace. You can resolve this by installing a simple jumper wire.

Use a simple red jumper wire to connect the two terminals. This jumper wire provides an alternate current path across the dead spot. Once you install the wire, test it with your meter to check the resistance. A reading of 2 ohms is absolutely perfect.

Liquid Defroster Repair Kit Option

Another repair option is to use a rear window defroster repair kit. This kit contains a conductive liquid that brushes on and acts very similar to a wire when dry. Put down a little fine line tape before brushing. This tape will keep you from painting outside the lines.

If you have a spot that has continuity but is clearly damaged, you should reinforce it. First, remove the plastic laminate and get down to the copper. You want to isolate this trace from the others. While the other traces are laminated in plastic and somewhat protected, you must keep your repair confined to this specific area. Apply a few coats of the conductive liquid, and the repair should be good.

Repairing a burned-up spot is a much more aggressive process because it asks a lot of the liquid. Since the trace must carry current, you should apply a little extra material to ensure it can handle the load. The finished result may not be aesthetically pleasing. In this situation, you must choose function over form.

After the liquid dries, test the trace. If your meter reads less than 1 ohm of resistance, that is pretty good for a liquid. Apply a little bit of clear packing tape over the repair. Just like insulation protects a copper wire, a little bit of clear packing tape will help protect our repair and give us the best chance at success.

Although parts of the work might not look pretty, you will be highly pleased with the final results. You will now have bulbs lighting up and gauges working perfectly again. Taking the time to diagnose and fix these traces yourself sure beats forking over about 300 bucks for a remanufactured cluster. Enjoy your working gauges on your next drive.
