THEN SPREAD SOME OF THIS ROYAL PURPLE ALL PURPOSE GREASE AROUND THE EDGES AND DROP ON A PLATE. NEXT WE ADD A SPARK PLUG THAT'S THE SAME LENGTH AS WE'LL BE RUNNING. THEN CENTER BURETTE OVER THE HOLE IN THE PLATE, FILL UP THE CHAMBER, AND STOP WHEN ALL THE AIR IS OUT. LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE A 116cc HEAD. NOW I'LL GIVE YOU ONE MORE PIECE OF ADVICE, YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND CHECK THE OTHER HEAD BECAUSE IT MAY HAVE BEEN MILLED DIFFERENTLY AT THE MACHINE SHOP. NOW IF YOU'RE BUILDING A RACE MOTOR YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND CHECK ALL FOUR CORNERS. IF IT WAS MILLED INACCURATELY AT THE MACHINE SHOP, THIS ONE COULD BE LESS AND THIS ONE COULD BE MORE. YOU'RE GONNA NEED TO HAVE THAT CORRECTED.
(JOE)>> NOW THE NEXT NUMBER WE NEED TO PUT IN OUR CALCULATOR IS EFFECTIVE DOME VOLUME, WHICH IS SIMPLY THE AMOUNT THAT EACH PISTON WILL ADD OR TAKE AWAY FROM

PISTON TO DECK CLEARANCE. NOW WHAT THAT IS IS WHEN THE PISTON IS AT THE TOP OF ITS STROKE, HOW FAR IT IS IN RELATIONSHIP TO THE DECK SURFACE.
NOW WE NEED TO KNOW THIS FOR TWO DIFFERENT REASONS, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE MINIMUM GASKET THICKNESS
THAT WE CAN RUN. ON A STEEL ROD LIKE WE'RE USING WE NEED AT LEAST 45 THOUSANDTHS CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE PISTON AND THE BOTTOM OF THE DECK SURFACE ON THE CYLINDER HEAD. IF YOU'RE RUNNING AN ALUMINUM ROD YOU'RE GONNA NEED AT LEAST TWICE AS MUCH.
THEY STRETCH A LOT MORE UNDER HEAT THAN A STEEL ROD WILL. NOW THE SECOND REASON WE NEED TO KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE BASICALLY THE LOWER THE PISTON IS IN THE CYLINDER WALL, THE LESS COMPRESSION WE'RE GONNA MAKE. NOW TO CHECK THIS ALL WE NEED IS OUR DECK BRIDGE AND BRING IT UP TO TOP DEAD CENTER.
(JOE)>> LOOKS LIKE FIVE THOUSANDTHS PISTON TO DECK, AND WE'RE STARTING WITH A 39 THOUSANDTHS THICK GASKET BECAUSE THAT'S THE MINIMUM WE CAN RUN. NOW THAT PUTS US AT 10.78 TO ONE COMPRESSION RATIO, AND WE TOLD YOU EARLIER THAT 10.5 TO ONE WAS THE LIMIT. OH AND REMEMBER, IRON HEADS DON'T DISSIPATE HEAT LIKE ALUMINUM HEADS DO. SO WHAT DO WE DO? QUITE SIMPLY WE CHANGE OUR GASKET THICKNESS TO 51 THOUSANDTHS, AND THAT WOULD GET OUR COMPRESSION RATIO TO 10.5 TO ONE, AND THAT'S A LOT MORE LIKE IT.
(JOHN)>> SO BY SIMPLY CHANGING FROM A 39 THOUSANDTHS THICK HEAD GASKET TO A 51 THOUSANDTHS, WE WERE ABLE TO TAKE OUR COMPRESSION RATIO FROM THE DANGER ZONE BACK DOWN TO A SAFE ZONE. AND NOW THAT YOU GUYS KNOW HOW TO SET YOUR COMPRESSION RATIO EXACTLY AND WHAT HEAD GASKETS YOU MIGHT NEED, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON? GET BACK OUT IN THE GARAGE AND WORK ON SOMETHING.

WELL TODAY WE'RE GONNA GO OVER A COUPLE DIFFERENT OPTIONS YOU'VE GOT ON HOW TO FIX IT. ONE IS WHAT'S CALLED A THREAD INSERT. NOW IT'S A PIECE OF STEEL WITH THREADS ON THE OUTSIDE AS WELL AS THREADS ON THE INSIDE. NOW THE BENEFIT TO USING ONE OF THESE IS IN AN APPLICATION WITH EXTREME CYLINDER PRESSURE. SOMETHING WITH A LOT OF BOOST, KINDA LIKE A DIESEL. NOW SECOND IS WHAT THEY CALL A HELICOIL KIT. THIS IS A PRECISION FORMED SCREW THREAD COIL THAT'S MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL AND HAS A DIAMOND CROSS SECTION. NOW THE FIRST THING I'M GONNA DO IS GO AHEAD AND LAY DOWN SOME TAPE. THIS WILL INSURE I WON'T GET ANY SHAVINGS DOWN IN MY CYLINDERS. NOW BEFORE WE GET STARTED DRILLING, I'VE GOT A LITTLE
TIP TO KEEPING THESE THINGS STRAIGHT AND TRUE THAT I WANT TO SHOW YOU GUYS. NOW I STARTED OUT BY CUTTING A PIECE OF PLATE METAL BIG ENOUGH TO COVER UP A CYLINDER AND I WENT AHEAD
AND PUT IN AN INDEXING HOLE IN THE CORNER. THEN WE'LL JUST TAKE OUR GASKET, LINE IT UP WITH THAT HOLE, AND USE ANOTHER BOLT HOLE SO WE GET OUR PATTERN AND BOLT IT TO THE DECK. I START BY USING A CENTER PUNCH SO I CAN DRILL MY PILOT HOLE. THEN I'LL STEP UP TO THE SIZE I NEED.
NOW THE REASON WE'RE GOING THROUGH ALL THIS TROUBLE IS BECAUSE WE WANT TO DRILL THAT HOLE AS STRAIGHT AS POSSIBLE. NOW YES, YOU CAN JUST EYEBALL IT. SOMETIMES IT WORKS OUT FINE, BUT THOSE OF YOU GUYS THAT WHO HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF THESE ALREADY KNOW THAT THE STRAIGHTER AND TRUER TO THE ORIGINAL HOLE AS POSSIBLE, THE BETTER THE HEAD WILL TORQUE DOWN. SO WHAT I'VE DONE IS ORDER A PIECE OF ROUND STOCK FROM THE LOCAL INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY STORE WITH A BORE THROUGH IT THE SIZE OF THE DRILL BIT WE'LL BE USING TO INSTALL THAT HELICOIL. SO WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS TAKE A DRILL BIT THAT'S TWO SIZES SMALLER THAN WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA USE. THEN WE CAN DROP OUR GUIDE IN PLACE AND LINE IT UP. NOW I'M GOING TO GET MIKE TO WELD THE PLATE TO THE GUIDE. THEN WE CAN TIGHTEN IT DOWN TO THE DECK.
NOW IF WE'VE DONE IT RIGHT OUR DRILL BIT SHOULD GO IN AND OUT OF THE DAMAGED THREADS AND GUIDE FAIRLY EASY. NOW THAT WE KNOW WE'RE CENTERED AND STRAIGHT, WE
CAN USE THE DRILL BIT THAT THE KIT SUGGEST TO DRILL OUT OUR HOLE FOR THAT HELICOIL. NOW ONCE WE'VE DRILLED THROUGH, WE CAN VACUUM OUT ANY SHAVINGS. NOW WE KNOW WE'VE DRILLED OUT OUR HOLD STRAIGHT AND CENTERED TO WHAT IT USED TO BE. NOW THE BEST PART ABOUT USING A JIG LIKE THIS IS IT DOESN'T COST A LOT OF MONEY TO MAKE ONE.
YOU CAN ACTUALLY PUT IT UP, SAVE IT FOR JUST THESE TYPE OF MOTORS, OR YOU CAN PUT DIFFERENT BOLT HOLES IN IT USING IT FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOTORS. NOW SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT YOU MADE YOURSELF, AND YOU CAN REST EASY KNOWING THAT YOU
DRILLED A STRAIGHT AND CENTERED HOLE EVERY TIME. NOW WE'RE READY TO TAP OUR HOLE WITH THE SUPPLIED TAP FOR OUR COIL SIZE. AND SINCE THE TAP IS TAPERED IT'S A LOT EASIER TO START.
BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO RUN THE TAP IN ANY MORE THAN THREE QUARTERS OF THE THREAD LENGTH. THEN REMOVE, VACUUM IT OUT AGAIN. WITH A LITTLE RED LOCTITE ON THE HELICOIL, GO AHEAD AND
THREAD IT IN UNTIL IT'S JUST BELOW FLUSH. DON'T FORGET BREAK OFF THE TANK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE INSERTS. AND YES, I'LL BE SPENDING SOME TIME LATER TAKING OUT A FREEZE PLUG TO FISH THAT THING OUT. SO THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE TORQUING YOUR HEAD BOLTS DOWN AND YOU HEAR THAT FATAL POP OF THE THREAD LETTING GO, DON'T FREAK OUT. YOUR LOCAL PARTS STORE'S GOT A HELICOIL KIT THAT'LL GET YOU BACK OUT ON THE ROAD. AND NOW'S THE TIME FOR THE MOMENT OF TRUTH, SWEET!

THEN SPREAD SOME OF THIS ROYAL PURPLE ALL PURPOSE GREASE AROUND THE EDGES AND DROP ON A PLATE. NEXT WE ADD A SPARK PLUG THAT'S THE SAME LENGTH AS WE'LL BE RUNNING. THEN CENTER BURETTE OVER THE HOLE IN THE PLATE, FILL UP THE CHAMBER, AND STOP WHEN ALL THE AIR IS OUT. LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE A 116cc HEAD. NOW I'LL GIVE YOU ONE MORE PIECE OF ADVICE, YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND CHECK THE OTHER HEAD BECAUSE IT MAY HAVE BEEN MILLED DIFFERENTLY AT THE MACHINE SHOP. NOW IF YOU'RE BUILDING A RACE MOTOR YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND CHECK ALL FOUR CORNERS. IF IT WAS MILLED INACCURATELY AT THE MACHINE SHOP, THIS ONE COULD BE LESS AND THIS ONE COULD BE MORE. NOW WE NEED TO KNOW THIS FOR TWO DIFFERENT REASONS, AND THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THE MINIMUM GASKET THICKNESS
THAT WE CAN RUN. ON A STEEL ROD LIKE WE'RE USING WE NEED AT LEAST 45 THOUSANDTHS CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE PISTON AND THE BOTTOM OF THE DECK SURFACE ON THE CYLINDER HEAD. IF YOU'RE RUNNING AN ALUMINUM ROD YOU'RE GONNA NEED AT LEAST TWICE AS MUCH.
THEY STRETCH A LOT MORE UNDER HEAT THAN A STEEL ROD WILL. NOW THE SECOND REASON WE NEED TO KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE BASICALLY THE LOWER THE PISTON IS IN THE CYLINDER WALL, THE LESS COMPRESSION WE'RE GONNA MAKE. NOW TO CHECK THIS ALL WE NEED IS OUR DECK BRIDGE AND BRING IT UP TO TOP DEAD CENTER.

QUITE SIMPLY WE CHANGE OUR GASKET THICKNESS TO 51 THOUSANDTHS, AND THAT WOULD GET OUR COMPRESSION RATIO TO 10.5 TO ONE, AND THAT'S A LOT MORE LIKE IT.

WELL TODAY WE'RE GONNA GO OVER A COUPLE DIFFERENT OPTIONS YOU'VE GOT ON HOW TO FIX IT. ONE IS WHAT'S CALLED A THREAD INSERT. NOW IT'S A PIECE OF STEEL WITH THREADS ON THE OUTSIDE AS WELL AS THREADS ON THE INSIDE. NOW THE BENEFIT TO USING ONE OF THESE IS IN AN APPLICATION WITH EXTREME CYLINDER PRESSURE. SOMETHING WITH A LOT OF BOOST, KINDA LIKE A DIESEL. NOW SECOND IS WHAT THEY CALL A HELICOIL KIT. THIS IS A PRECISION FORMED SCREW THREAD COIL THAT'S MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL AND HAS A DIAMOND CROSS SECTION. NOW IT'S THE MOST COMMON REPAIR FOR VEHICLES TODAY BECAUSE OF ITS COSTS AND EASE TO PUT IN. SO SINCE WE'RE WORKING ON A DAILY DRIVER, THIS WILL BE THE ROUTE WE'RE TAKING. NOW I DIDN'T RUN INTO THIS LITTLE HEADACHE UNTIL I ACTUALLY TRIED TO TORQUE THE HEAD ON THIS SIDE. NOW EVEN THOUGH I RAN A TAP THROUGH ALL THE THREADS, WHEN I WENT TO TORQUE THE HEAD DOWN I RIPPED THE THREADS RIGHT OUT OF THE BLOCK. NOW IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU, DON'T WORRY. NOW THE FIRST THING I'M GONNA DO IS GO AHEAD AND LAY DOWN SOME TAPE. THIS WILL INSURE I WON'T GET ANY SHAVINGS DOWN IN MY CYLINDERS. NOW BEFORE WE GET STARTED DRILLING, I'VE GOT A LITTLE
TIP TO KEEPING THESE THINGS STRAIGHT AND TRUE THAT I WANT TO SHOW YOU GUYS. NOW I STARTED OUT BY CUTTING A PIECE OF PLATE METAL BIG ENOUGH TO COVER UP A CYLINDER AND I WENT AHEAD
AND PUT IN AN INDEXING HOLE IN THE CORNER. THEN WE'LL JUST TAKE OUR GASKET, LINE IT UP WITH THAT HOLE, AND USE ANOTHER BOLT HOLE SO WE GET OUR PATTERN AND BOLT IT TO THE DECK. I START BY USING A CENTER PUNCH SO I CAN DRILL MY PILOT HOLE. THEN I'LL STEP UP TO THE SIZE I NEED.
NOW THE REASON WE'RE GOING THROUGH ALL THIS TROUBLE IS BECAUSE WE WANT TO DRILL THAT HOLE AS STRAIGHT AS POSSIBLE. NOW YES, YOU CAN JUST EYEBALL IT. SOMETIMES IT WORKS OUT FINE, BUT THOSE OF YOU GUYS THAT WHO HAVE DONE A COUPLE OF THESE ALREADY KNOW THAT THE STRAIGHTER AND TRUER TO THE ORIGINAL HOLE AS POSSIBLE, THE BETTER THE HEAD WILL TORQUE DOWN. SO WHAT I'VE DONE IS ORDER A PIECE OF ROUND STOCK FROM THE LOCAL INDUSTRIAL SUPPLY STORE WITH A BORE THROUGH IT THE SIZE OF THE DRILL BIT WE'LL BE USING TO INSTALL THAT HELICOIL. SO WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS TAKE A DRILL BIT THAT'S TWO SIZES SMALLER THAN WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA USE. THEN WE CAN DROP OUR GUIDE IN PLACE AND LINE IT UP. NOW I'M GOING TO GET MIKE TO WELD THE PLATE TO THE GUIDE. THEN WE CAN TIGHTEN IT DOWN TO THE DECK.
NOW IF WE'VE DONE IT RIGHT OUR DRILL BIT SHOULD GO IN AND OUT OF THE DAMAGED THREADS AND GUIDE FAIRLY EASY. NOW THAT WE KNOW WE'RE CENTERED AND STRAIGHT, WE
CAN USE THE DRILL BIT THAT THE KIT SUGGEST TO DRILL OUT OUR HOLE FOR THAT HELICOIL. NOW ONCE WE'VE DRILLED THROUGH, WE CAN VACUUM OUT ANY SHAVINGS. NOW WE KNOW WE'VE DRILLED OUT OUR HOLD STRAIGHT AND CENTERED TO WHAT IT USED TO BE. NOW THE BEST PART ABOUT USING A JIG LIKE THIS IS IT DOESN'T COST A LOT OF MONEY TO MAKE ONE.
YOU CAN ACTUALLY PUT IT UP, SAVE IT FOR JUST THESE TYPE OF MOTORS, OR YOU CAN PUT DIFFERENT BOLT HOLES IN IT USING IT FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF MOTORS. NOW SOMETHING YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT YOU MADE YOURSELF, AND YOU CAN REST EASY KNOWING THAT YOU
DRILLED A STRAIGHT AND CENTERED HOLE EVERY TIME. NOW WE'RE READY TO TAP OUR HOLE WITH THE SUPPLIED TAP FOR OUR COIL SIZE. AND SINCE THE TAP IS TAPERED IT'S A LOT EASIER TO START.
BUT YOU DON'T NEED TO RUN THE TAP IN ANY MORE THAN THREE QUARTERS OF THE THREAD LENGTH. THEN REMOVE, VACUUM IT OUT AGAIN. WITH A LITTLE RED LOCTITE ON THE HELICOIL, GO AHEAD AND
THREAD IT IN UNTIL IT'S JUST BELOW FLUSH. DON'T FORGET BREAK OFF THE TANK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE INSERTS. AND YES, I'LL BE SPENDING SOME TIME LATER TAKING OUT A FREEZE PLUG TO FISH THAT THING OUT. SO THE NEXT TIME YOU'RE TORQUING YOUR HEAD BOLTS DOWN AND YOU HEAR THAT FATAL POP OF THE THREAD LETTING GO, DON'T FREAK OUT. HEY YOU COULD EVEN USE THIS ON A POINTS STYLE DISTRIBUTOR AND HIDE THE BOX FOR THAT FACTORY LOOK WITH THAT NEW STYLE PERFORMANCE. NOW ONE THING I LIKE TO DO IS GO AHEAD AND REMOVE THE TERMINALS FROM THE PLASTIC CLIP, SLIDE ON SOME HEAT SHRINK. THEN USE A LITTLE BIT OF LOCTITE DIELECTRIC GREASE TO PREVENT FORMING CORROSION. ONCE THEY'RE SNAPPED IN PLACE, A LITTLE BIT OF HEAT WILL SEAL THEM UP FOREVER. THESE PROVIDED CLAMPS WILL KEEP THE WIRES FROM GETTING RIPPED APART BY THE ROTOR BUTTON, AND THEY JUST GO RIGHT BACK INTO PLACE WHERE THE OLD MODULE WAS. AND NOW YOU CAN PUT THE REST BACK TOGETHER.
NOW THE WAY YOU WIRE ONE OF THESE SYSTEMS UP IS JUST AS EASY AS A CONVERSION. HEAVY RED AND BLACK GOES STRAIGHT TO THE BATTERY. NOW THE LITTLE RED WIRE IS LABELED 12 VOLT SWITCH. IT GOES RIGHT TO WHAT USED TO RUN YOUR HEI IGNITION. THE GRAY WIRE'S FOR A TACH OUTPUT, ORANGE AND BLACK ARE FOR YOUR COIL POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE, AND OBVIOUSLY THE GREEN AND PURPLE GO TO WHAT WE JUST INSTALLED IN THE DISTRIBUTOR.
