(ANNOUNCER)>> THERE'S NOTHING
LIKE A FRESHLY MACHINED AND UPGRADED SET OF PERFORMANCE
CYLINDER HEADS, AND NOTHING LIKE DOING IT YOURSELF IF YOU
WANT TO SAVE A BUNCH OF MONEY. TODAY ON HORSEPOWER YOU'LL
DISCOVER THE RIGHT WAY TO
DO IT WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR GARAGE.
(JOE)>> WHETHER IT'S A STREET ENGINE OR AN ENGINE YOU USE FOR SOME SERIOUS WEEKEND RACING, FRESHENING UP THE CYLINDER HEADS WILL IMPROVE PERFORMANCE, FUEL ECONOMY, AND RELIABILITY. WELL IF YOU'RE A DO IT YOURSELFER, YOU CAN ACTUALLY FRESHEN YOUR HEADS AT HOME. ALL IT TAKES IS AN INVESTMENT IN SOME SIMPLE TOOLS, A LITTLE BIT OF OUTSIDE HELP, BUT MOSTLY IT'S ALL YOU. THIS ENGINE WE BUILT LAST YEAR FOR BRACKET RACING IS A GOOD CANDIDATE.
SO AFTER REMOVING BOTH HEADS, DON'T FORGET TO COVER THE EXPOSED ENGINE. A PLASTIC BAG'S CHEAP INSURANCE AGAINST DIRT.
(JOHN)>> BEFORE WE GET TOO CARRIED AWAY ON TEAR DOWN WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA STOP AND TAKE A LOOK AT HOW THIS THING WAS RUNNING. THIS THING'S GONNA WANT TO TELL US A STORY IF WE'LL STOP AND LISTEN. NOW THIS BARE SPOT AROUND THE INTAKE VALVE IS TELLING US RIGHT NOW THAT WE DON'T HAVE A COMPLETE BURN. NOW LOOKING AT THE UNEVEN BURN ON OUR PISTON JUST CONFIRMS THAT WE COULD USE A LITTLE BIT OF CYLINDER HEAD WORK. A LITTLE LATER WE'RE ACTUALLY GONNA SHOW YOU HOW TO
DESHROUD THIS COMBUSTION CHAMBER, GET A LITTLE BIT MORE AIR FLOW AROUND THAT VALVE. FOR THE TEAR DOWN THE SPRINGS AND RETAINERS COME OUT. THEN THE VALVES, AND FINALLY THE SEALS AND LOCATORS.
(JOE)>> ON OUR LAST BUILD WITH THIS ENGINE WE DIDN'T REPLACE
THE VALVES, AND THEY'VE HAD QUITE A BIT OF ABUSE SINCE THEN. SO WE'LL SWAP THEM OUT LATER. YOU SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE YOURS REFACED. A LOCAL SHOP CAN DO IT FOR ABOUT TWO BUCKS A VALVE. WITH THE GASKETS AND GASKET MATERIAL REMOVED, THE HEADS ARE GOING INTO OUR SONIC CLEANER.
YOU CAN TAKE YOURS TO A CAR WASH FOR CLEANING, OR JUST SEND THEM OUT TO A MACHINE SHOP FOR ABOUT $20 BUCKS. WE'RE ALSO CLEANING THE OIL OFF OUR SPRINGS AND OTHER VALVE TRAIN PARTS WITH SOLVENT. AFTER DRYING IT'S OFF TO THE BEAD BLASTER. GO OVER THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST RUNNERS, AND COMBUSTION CHAMBERS. AFTER THIS DON'T FORGET TO CLEAN THEM AGAIN TO GET RID OF ALL THAT SAND.
(JOHN)>> NOW HERE'S WHY WE'RE REPLACING THE VALVES, 3.41 ON THE TOP, 3.40 ON THE BOTTOM. NOW THAT'S OVER ONE THOUSANDTHS TAPER TOO MUCH. IN FACT THERE'S WAY TOO MUCH ROOM FOR MOVEMENT IN THESE GUIDES. NOW ALL THAT SLOP IS WORKING A NUMBER ON THESE GUIDES. NOW THAT'S GONNA BE AN EASY FIX BY JUST SIMPLY INSTALLING A LINER. NOW THAT'S A LOT CHEAPER THAN REPLACING THE WHOLE GUIDE AND IT WORKS JUST AS GOOD, ESPECIALLY WHEN ANYBODY CAN DO IT WITH A KIT FROM GOODSON AT THEIR HOUSE.
SPRAY ALL THE GUIDES WITH WD 40 BECAUSE WE'RE ABOUT TO SHOVE THIS WICKED REAMER RIGHT DOWN ITS THROAT. USE AN ALIGNMENT CONE AND AN AIR DRILL, INSERT THE REAMER INTO THE FIRST GUIDE. BORE IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH. THE KIT INCLUDES A TWO PIECE AUTO DRIVER FOR YOUR BRONZE LINERS.
USING A SHORT STROKE PNEUMATIC HAMMER, IT ONLY TAKES A FEW SECONDS TO DRIVE IN EACH LINER. NOW WE USE THE KITS TRIMMING TOOL AND AN AIR DRILL TO QUICKLY TRIM THE LINER FLUSH TO THE SURFACE. I LIKE TO FOLLOW UP WITH A CHAMFERING TOOL AND BEVEL THE EDGES. THE NEXT STEP IS SIZING WITH A BALL TOOL, AGAIN USING THE PNEUMATIC HAMMER. THE BALL SHOULD BE ONE THOUSANDTHS LARGER THAN THE VALVE ITSELF. NOW THIS MAY REQUIRE SEVERAL PASSES BEFORE IT'S COMPLETELY
SIZED TO THE VALVE STEM.
THE BALL ALSO STRETCHES THE BRONZE LINER MATERIAL. WE CAN JUST TRIM AWAY THE EXCESS. FINALLY THAT'S THE FEEL OF A GOOD FIT, AND THE
SOUND OF ONE TOO.
(JOE)>> HEY WELCOME BACK TO OUR HOME SHOP CYLINDER HEAD REFRESHING PROJECT. NEXT UP WE'RE GONNA SHOW YOU HOW TO DO A VALVE JOB AT HOME THE OLD SCHOOL WAY USING A DIE GRINDER AND A COUPLE OF ATTACHMENTS. NOW THIS IS THE SAME PROCEDURE THAT TOP FUEL RACE TEAMS DO BETWEEN ROUNDS AT THE TRACK, AND SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO
DO ANY TIME YOU REPLACE YOUR VALVE GUIDES. WE FIRST COAT THE INTAKE VALVE SEATS WITH BLUE DYE CHEM. WITH THE PILOT IN PLACE, WE DROP IN THE FIRST STONE
FOR A 45 DEGREE SEAT CUT. ATTACH A DIE GRINDER WITH A SPECIAL ADAPTER AND GRIND UNTIL ALL THE BLUE IS REMOVED FROM THE AREA. THE SECOND STONE IS FOR A 35 DEGREE TOP CUT. AFTER THE GRINDING, REMOVE THE PILOT, AND THERE'S OUR 45 DEGREE CUT, THERE'S OUT 35 DEGREE CUT. NOW WE'RE GONNA LAP THE VALVE FOR THIS SEAT BY APPLYING MORE BLUE TO THE SEAT AND LAPPING COMPOUND AROUND THE EDGE OF THE VALVE FACE. ROLL IT BACK AND FORTH SEVERAL TIMES, WIPE CLEAN, AND CHECK THE RESULTS.
(JOHN)>> NICE, SHINY, PRETTY SEAT AREA. NOW ON THE VALVE YOU SEE HOW WE'VE GOT A SHINY SPOT ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM WITH OUR SEAT AREA RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE, THAT'S PERFECT! AFTER GRINDING AND LAPPING THE REST OF THE INTAKE SEATS AND VALVES, WE SWITCHED TO SMALLER STONES FOR THE EXHAUST SEATS. ALL OF THESE STONES ARE GENERALLY GOOD FOR ONE COMPLETE VALVE JOB BEFORE THEY NEED TO BE REDRESSED. GOODSON ALSO MAKES A UNIVERSAL DRESSING STAND JUST FOR THAT. NOW TO DESHROUD THIS INTAKE VALVE LIKE WE MENTIONED EARLIER, WE'RE FIRST GONNA NEED TO SAND THE DECK SO WE'VE GOT A NICE CLEAN SURFACE TO SCRIBE A LINE ON.
NOW A LOT OF GUYS WILL USE AN AIR TOOL AND A SCOTCH BRITE PAD TO GO AHEAD AND SAND THAT DOWN. WELL WHAT THAT CAN DO IS CAUSE WAVES AND UNEVEN SPOTS IN THE DECK SURFACE AND HEAD GASKET SEAL. NOW WHAT I LIKE TO USE IS JUST A FLAT BAR AND SOME SAND PAPER. IF THE HEADS ARE ALUMINUM LIKE OURS, FIRST WE NEED TO SPRAY
THE SURFACE WITH WD 40.
THEN USING ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE BAR, SAND DIAGONALLY AND HORIZONTALLY. CLEAN THE SURFACE WITH SOME MORE WD 40, ADD A COUPLE OF
DOWEL PINS, BRUSH ON SOME DYE CHEM AROUND THE AREA YOU'LL BE WORKING, AND DROP ON THE HEAD GASKETS. SCRIBE AROUND THE INSIDE EDGE OF THE GASKET, WHICH WILL TELL YOU HOW MUCH METAL YOU CAN TAKE AWAY. DROP IN AN OLD INTAKE VALVE WRAPPED IN SOME ELECTRICAL TAPE TO PREVENT IT FROM SPINNING, AND USE NONFERROUS CARBIDE BIT TO GRIND THE CHAMBER WALL UP TO THE SCRIBE MARKS. FOLLOW THAT WITH A CARTRIDGE ROLL TO SMOOTH OUT THE SURFACE, AND ONCE YOU'VE GOT SOME PRACTICE UNDER YOUR BELT, YOU CAN REMOVE THE VALVE AND GET A LITTLE CLOSER TO THE SEAT.
AFTER YOUR FINISHED, USING A PIECE OF LIGHTER GRIT PAPER, RESAND THE DECK AS WELL AS INTAKE TIDES.
(JOE)>> AFTER FINAL CLEANING, GET READY TO REASSEMBLE YOUR HEADS. THE TOOLS AND MATERIALS USED COST A FEW HUNDRED BUCKS, BUT YOU'LL GET YOUR MONEY BACK AFTER YOU DO A
COUPLE OF SETS OF HEADS. PLUS THINK OF ALL THE CASH YOU CAN MAKE ON THE SIDE BY FRESHENING HEADS FOR FRIENDS.
(JOHN)>> WELL THAT'S IT FOR OUR HEADS. NOW IF YOU GUYS WERE THINKING ABOUT DOING A CAM SWAP, NOW WOULD BE THE TIME. AND THAT'S OUR PLAN, AND IT'LL BE EASIER THANKS TO THE THIS TWO PIECE TIMING COVER. THAT ALLOWS US TO MAKE THE SWAP WITHOUT REMOVING THE OIL PAN. IF YOUR ENGINE'S IN THE CAR, THINK OF HOW CONVENIENT THAT WOULD BE.
(JOE)>> THE CAM THAT'S COMING OUT IS A COMP BIG MOTHER THUMPER ROLLER THAT HELPED THIS ENGINE MAKE 470
HORSEPOWER ON THE DYNO LAST TIME. WITH THE WORK WE'VE DONE, THIS COMP MAGNUM SERIES SHOULD BE AN IMPROVEMENT WITH A LITTLE MORE LIFT AND DURATION. LOBE SEPARATION IS 110 COMPARED TO THE OTHER CAM'S 107, WHICH MEANS LESS OVERLAP. WE'RE GONNA REINSTALL THE TIMING SET BUT NOT THE COVER FOR NOW. THAT'S BECAUSE WITH ABOUT 50 THOUSANDTHS MORE LIFT WE NEED TO CHECK PISTON TO VALVE CLEARANCE. THE GOOD OLE FASHIONED WAY IS TO CLEAN ONE
OF THE PISTON FACES.
THEN PUT CLAY INTO THE PISTON'S VALVE POCKETS AND A LITTLE OIL TO KEEP THE CLAY FROM STICKING TO THE VALVES. AND WITH THE GASKETS ON SNUG DOWN THE HEAD.
(JOHN)>> WITH EVERY CAM SWAP CHECK YOUR LIFTERS. THESE ORIGINALS WOULD BIND AT FULL LIFT WITH FATAL RESULTS. A QUICK FIX, A SET OF COMP'S OE STYLE. NEXT A PAIR OF PUSH RODS, AND ROCKER ARMS SET TO ZERO LASH. AFTER TURNING THE ENGINE OVER SEVERAL TIMES, WE CAN
NOW REMOVE THE HEADS. CUT AWAY A SMALL PIECE OF CLAY NEAR THE AREA YOU WANT TO CHECK. USING A SET OF DIAL CALIPERS, WE FIRST CHECKED THE DEPTH OF THE VALVE DROP, WHICH IS WELL WITHIN THE SAFE ZONE. THEN CHECK THE RADIAL, AND AT 170 THOUSANDTHS, WE'RE WELL
WITHIN THE SAFE RANGE. ANOTHER DETAIL WE DON'T WANT TO OVER LOOK. SINCE WE USED SEALER LAST TIME, WE HAVE TO CLEAN OUT THESE BOLT HOLES OT GET AN ACCURATE TORQUE READING. WITH THE TIMING COVERED BACK IN PLACE, I'M GONNA CHECK THE NEW CAM'S END PLAY. FIRST ZERO THE DIAL INDICATOR, MOVE THE CAM, AND AT 18 THOUSANDTHS WE'RE WITHIN THE 10 TO 20 THOUSANDTHS RANGE. WE'RE USING A SET OF FEL PRO'S PERMATOR GASKETS. NOW THESE WERE DESIGNED FOR CYLINDER HEAD SWAPS TO CORRECT MINOR IRREGULARITIES. WE'RE USING THE FRESHLY CLEANED ARP BOLTS COATED WITH LOCTITE'S HEAD BOLT AND WATER JACKET SEALANT. AFTER LASHING THE VALVES, EVERYTHING WE TOOK OFF GOES BACK ON, EXCEPT FOR THIS NEW 750 CARB FROM SUMMIT.
ALRIGHT WE'RE BACK AT 36 DEGREES JUST LIKE THE LAST TIME WE RAN THIS MOTOR. NOW WE'RE GONNA RUN IT TODAY FOR TWO REASONS.
ONE, TO SHOW YOU THAT AN AT HOME VALVE JOB WILL WORK. AND TWO, SEE IF THAT CAM DOES WHAT WE WANT IT TO. [ engine revving ] AFTER SEVERAL PULLS AND A FEW MORE JUST BECAUSE, 458 AT 5,800 AND 447 AT 4,000. NOW THE HEAD JOB WE DID, WELL IT'S WORKING GREAT. THE PEAK NUMBERS WERE DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT BUT THAT WAS TO BE EXPECTED. WE KNEW THAT WAS GONNA HAPPEN WITH THE CAM SWAP. BUT WHERE WE DID PICK UP WAS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE RPM
RANGE, AND THE MOTOR ACTUALLY RUNS A LOT BETTER. NOW TO BEST PART ABOUT ALL THIS IS YOU CAN DO IT YOURSELF AT YOUR HOUSE.
(ANNOUNCER)>> WHEN THE GOOD GUYS COME TO TOWN, THE COOLEST HOT RODS COME TOO. NEXT WE'LL VISIT A SHOW IN THE HEARTLAND WHERE 1,500 REMARKABLE RIDES AND THEIR OWNERS CELEBRATE THE HIGH PERFORMANCE LIFESTYLE.
(JOE)>> WE'VE LEFT THE HORSEPOWER SHOP FOR DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE AND WHY NOT? THE GOOD GUYS ARE IN TOWN WITH OVER 2,000 VEHICLES, INCLUDING
JUST ABOUT ANY AMERICAN RIDE IMAGINABLE AS LONG
AS IT'S '72 OR OLDER. ( )>> NOTHING BAD AT ALL HERE, EVERYTHING'S GOOD.
(JOE)>> AMERICA'S PREMIER CAR CLUB HOLDS 20 NATIONAL SUMMER EVENTS LIKE THIS ONE EVERY YEAR. WHILE IT'S MOSTLY SHOW, THERE'S PLENTY OF GO IF YOU WANT TO ZIP AROUND THE AUTO CROSS. WHILE GOOD GUYS EVENTS ATTRACT SERIOUS SHOW CAR COMPETITORS, IT'S ALSO JUST THE ULTIMATE CELEBRATION OF CAR LOVING CAMARADERIE.
(HARRY)>> IT'S A TAILGATE PICNIC ATMOSPHERE. THEY CAN REALLY GO ANY WHERE THEY WANT, PARK WITH THEIR EASY UP AND GET UNDER THE SHADE, AND BE WITH THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND HAVE A GOOD TIME.
(JOE)>> AND THIS IS THE BUILDER'S CHOICE AREA, THE VERY BEST CARS BY THE BEST BUILDERS ALL COURTESY OF THE BEST BANK ACCOUNTS. RIGHT AWAY, THIS '65 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE GOT MY ATTENTION, LIKE A KICK BACK TO A POLITICIAN. THE OWNER ENTRUSTED THE TALENTS OF SOME NEW GENERATION CAR BUILDERS.
(DUSTIN)>> WE WANTED IT TO LOOK LIKE A MUSTANG WHEN IT WAS DONE, BUT YET WE WANTED TO REFINE THE ORIGINAL LOOK OF IT. SO YOU KNOW, WE DID A LOT OF SHEET METAL FABRICATION, ADDED A REAR SPOILER TO IT, WE GOT RID OF THE POT METAL PIECES THAT'S ON THE FRONT AND REAR, KINDA OPENED THE GRILL UP, GAVE IT A LITTLE MORE OF A NEWER SHELBY GRILL LOOK. IT'S A FORD RACING BOSS 347 CRATE ENGINE. IT'S RATED AT 450 HORSE, 450 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE. THE CAR'S DONE WELL EVERY SHOW IT'S WENT TO. IT'S WON AN AWARD AT EVERY ONE. SO HOPEFULLY WE TAKE HOME ANOTHER ONE TODAY.
(JOE)>> THIS CHEVY MAKES A MORE RADICAL STATEMENT WITH OFF THE HOOK GRAPHICS ON THE SIDE AND A TWIN TURBO 502 UNDER THE HOOD.
(RICH)>> OH I BASICALLY SAID TO HIM, HE KNEW IT BETTER THAN ME AND TO BUILD WHAT HE LIKED.
AND I'M IN LOVE WITH IT, SO YOU KNOW, HE'S DONE A GREAT JOB.
JUST TO SEE PEOPLE'S FACES AND GET THAT GRATITUDE OR PAT ON THE BACK, THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS TO ME.
(JOE)>> YOU HATE TO LET THEM GO SOMETIMES WHEN THEY TURN OUT THIS GOOD?
(BILL)>> YEAH!
(JOE)>> BUT HE'S WRITING THE CHECK.
(BILL)>> THAT'S IT.
(JOE)>> THE HANDS DOWN ATTENTION GRABBER THOUGH WAS THIS '55 TBIRD, WINNER OF THE PRESTIGIOUS RIDLER AWARD. IT'S LIKE THE PULITZER PRIZE OF SHOW CAR COMPETITION.
(DWAYNE)>> MY HEART STOPPED FOR A COUPLE OF BEATS AND IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE.
(JOE)>> DWAYNE ENLISTED THE HANDY WORK OF CRAFTSMEN FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING HIS SONS WHO CAME UP WITH THE DESIGN.
(DWAYNE)>> IT'S STILL A CAR BUT IT IS A MASTERPIECE. WE WANT IT OUT HERE SO THAT EVERYBODY CAN ENJOY IT, AND LOOK AT IT, AND MAYBE INSPIRE SOME MORE YOUNG GUYS.
(JOE)>> YOU'D BE SURPRISED HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS DRIVE THEIR MACHINES TO GOOD GUYS SHOWS, OFTEN MANY HUNDREDS OF MILES. WHATEVER THEY DRIVE, THERE'S USUALLY A SPECIAL CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CAR AND DRIVER, ONE THAT'S ROOTED IN THEIR PAST.
(HARRY)>> WHAT DID I DRIVE MY FIRST GIRLFRIEND, MY NOW CURRENT WIFE, TO HIGH SCHOOL AND HAVING FUN WITH IT.
(JOE)>> SOMETIMES THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON TOO.
(HARRY)>> I HOPE THEY ARE, IN MY CASE THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY.
(JOE)>> SOME OF THE BEST CARS HERE ARE THE RESULTS OF HARD WORKING HOME BUILDERS.
WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE WHAT THEY BROUGHT TO SHOW OFF.
(JOE)>> IT ALL STARTED WITH A SIMPLE ONE DAY SHOW IN PLEASANTON, CALIFORNIA, BACK IN THE EARLY '80'S. NOW EVERY GOOD GUYS EVENT IS A WEEKEND SPECTACLE IN 20 CITIES EVERY YEAR ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THIS YEAR THEY'RE CELEBRATING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEUCE COUPE, STILL REVERED BY MANY AS THE CONSUMMATE HOT ROD. JUST ABOUT ALL THE CARS HERE ARE COOL, BUT SO ARE THE STORIES THAT CONNECT THEM TO THEIR OWNERS. WELL HERE'S ONE. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU'VE GOT A RARE ZL ONE ENGINE YOU WANT TO SHOW OFF.
(JOHNNY)>> WE BUILT THE CAR AROUND IT MOSTLY. CALLED IT ZL 55 BECAUSE IT'S A ZL ONE MOTOR.
(JOE)>> WITH SO MANY PROFESSIONALLY BUILT HIGH END RODS TO SHOW OFF, COMPETITION FOR TROPHIES IS INTENSE, ESPECIALLY IF WINNING IS YOUR MAIN MOTIVE.
(HARRY)>> THERE ARE GUYS THAT COME JUST FOR THAT, BUT
THERE'S GUYS THAT COME TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. IF THEY GET A PICK THEY'RE HAPPY, IT'S ICING ON THE CAKE. IF THEY DON'T, NO BIG DEAL.
(JOE)>> NOW THIS AREA'S CALLED HOME BUILT HEAVEN.
TRANSLATIONAL, DO MOST OF YOUR OWN WORK AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RESULTS DON'T BLAME THE BUILDER CAUSE YOU'RE IT. MIKE EKSTRUM BUILT THIS SHOW QUALITY CHEVELLE HIMSELF, AND DROPPED IN A BLOWN 396 THAT EVERYONE THINKS IS CARBURETED. (MIKE E.)>> OH THERE'S NO CARBURETORS UNDERNEATH IT. IT'S ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION INSIDE THAT HATCH.
(JOE)>> THAT FOOLS A LOT OF PEOPLE DOESN'T IT. (MIKE E.)>> IT DOES, IT DOES!
(JOE)>> HERE'S A TIP, IF YOUR '59 CHEVY DOESN'T GET ENOUGH ATTENTION, WELL JUST MODIFY YOUR BOAT TO MATCH IT.
(DONNIE)>> WELL ONE EVENING WE WERE GETTING READY TO PAINT IT. HE WAS SCUFFING IT DOWN AND I WAS WATCHING HIM DO IT.
(HAPPIE)>> HE SAYS, HOW COOL WOULD IT BE IF THE BACK OF THAT BOAT LOOKED LIKE THE CAR? AND I SAID, WELL.
(DONNIE)>> ARE YOU CRAZY, AND SAID WELL YEAH, PROBABLY.
(HAPPIE)>> I THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A MINUTE AND I CALLED HIM A FEW CHOICE WORDS, AND I SAID, ALRIGHT, YOU KNOW, I'LL DO HER. SO WHAT DO Y'ALL THINK OF IT, IS IT DIFFERENT? ( )>> OH YEAH!
(JOE)>> I'VE GOT TO SAY, MY FAVORITE IN HOME BUILT HEAVEN IS THIS 1970 CADILLAC HYBRID. BUILT BY A RETIRED PHYSICIAN, THE PROJECT STARTED WITH A PHONE CALL FROM A FRIEND.
(WES)>> AND I SAID WHAT IS IT? HE SAID IT'S THE BIGGEST CADILLAC ENGINE EVER BUILT, ITS' FREE, ALL YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS COME AND GET IT.
(JOE)>> USING PARTS FROM SEVEN DIFFERENT VEHICLES, DOCTOR WES
WENT TO WORK BUILDING HIS ONE OF A KIND TWO SEATER ELDORADO.
(WES)>> WHEN YOU GET OVER 80, TWO SEATS IS ALL YOU NEED ANYWAY. AND MOST OF THE TIME THE RIGHT ONE'S EMPTY.
(JOE)>> A GOOD GUYS SHOW IS FULL OF GOOD GEARHEAD INGENUITY, FULL OF TRIBUTES TO THE HERITAGE AND PASSION
OF AMERICAN CAR CULTURE. AND THE GUYS WHO RUN IT WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT PASSION IS PASSED DOWN TO FUTURE GENERATIONS.
(HARRY)>> NOT ONLY ARE THE OLDER GUYS STILL INTO IT UP TO THEIR EYEBALLS, BUT THEY'RE STARTING TO SPREAD THE LOVE TO THEIR KIDS AND THEIR GRAND KIDS. WE'RE HOPING TO CONTINUE THIS FOR, YOU KNOW, HOPEFULLY ANOTHER 30 YEARS, OR 50 YEARS, OR 100 YEARS.
(JOE)>> WELL IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S TIME FOR THE GOOD GUYS GOOD BYE CRUISE, AND WELL WE'VE GOT TO GO ANYWAY. WE'LL SEE YOU NEXT TIME! COOL STREET ROD!

THE BALL ALSO STRETCHES THE BRONZE LINER MATERIAL. WE CAN JUST TRIM AWAY THE EXCESS. FINALLY THAT'S THE FEEL OF A GOOD FIT, AND THE
