Today on horsepower, we're back on the case with our Turbo Mustang project. Everything from dropping the motor in up front to building a beefy rear end out back.
We started our turbo stang project with a 382 inch small block. And after we added the turbo kit, it made 1110 horsepower at the fly wheel.
Then we built a complete roll cage for safety, followed up with tin work to enclose the cockpit, reinforce the sub frames and replace the floorboards.
Today we're gonna get started up front with a proactive system from Q A one. Now it comes with a tubular K member control arms struts, springs, bump steer kit and castor camber plates. Now it's up to 30 pounds lighter than the factory set up and offers a lot more clearance. Plus the springs are specifically rated for the fox body Mustang. Now, if you're looking for better weight distribution, it gives you two locations to mount the engine stock and one inch to the rear.
First, we get the K member loosely bolted up,
then install the control arms
and the castor camera plates.
Next, the spindles
followed by the struts
spring adjuster and shim
next, the spring followed by the cap,
finally raise it into the strut tower
and install the adjuster knob.
Here's another way we're gonna lose a lot of weight off the front of our mustang. We're getting rid of all the power steering components like the rack, the pump and all the lines and we're replacing it with this one from Flaming River. Now, this thing has a chrome steel center tube with aluminum housings and we decided to get ours with the stock ratio.
The rack and pinion installs on the front of the K member.
Next, we can screw on the bump steer kit and attach it to the spindle.
Ok. The brakes are next and aerospace has a kit with guys like us in mind. Now, this pro street kit was specially designed for street strip driving
and stopping.
Now they come with 11 and three quarter inch vane rotors, front and rear,
the four piston calipers, the mounting brackets and the hub adapter are all made of build aluminum. And of course it comes with brake pads, dust caps and wheel bearings
with some lock tide on the bolts. We can mate up the rotor and the hat
grease, the wheel bearings,
install a caliper bracket,
then slide the hub and rotor onto the spindle,
install the supply dust cap.
And finally with the pads installed, we can put the caliber into place now that we have the front end tackled, let's get started on the rear. Now, this is a custom fab nine housing for Mosier engineering. It features three inch axle tubes and the housing is made out of eight inch mild steel that's been laser cut. Now, they also take the extra step to include a 38 inch face plate and we also had the four length brackets installed. Now over here is their aluminum case. We had stuffed with 411 gears, a Detroit locker and to handle the abuse. A 1350 P yoke. Now, last but not least are these massive 35 spline custom alloy axles.
The case goes into the housing first
followed by the axle seals with a little grease.
Now slide the axles in.
Next, we're using this plate that retains the axle and also doubles as a caliper bracket.
Now with the rotors and calipers on the rear end,
we can jack it into place and install the four length part
followed by the rear shocks
to finish up the rear. Is this diagonal bar?

it's re turned out really nice. Yeah, it sure did. And now we're ready to drop in our healthy little small block. Now we could go ahead and mount it right to the K member on conventional engine mounts, but we're not gonna take that route since we made so much power with it. Instead, we're gonna use an aluminum front engine plate from competition engineering. Now this thing goes in between the timing cover and the water pump and then secures to the frame rails here on the outside.
Now, for the back of the motor, we're gonna use this mid plate that goes in between the block and the transmission and it attaches to the frame rail. The same way
with the engine in the car, we can install the exhaust tubing for the turbo,
then drop the turbo onto the flange
and tighten it all down
with that. We're done with this car for at least today. Now, in case some of you were wondering where Joe was at. Well, he's got the luxury of being in sunny California for a celebration of hot rodding vintage drag racing and the whole heritage of horsepower. We're gonna check in with them right after the break.
Well, all I can say is I'm speechless but welcome to the hottest hot rod reunion of them all. Wow, that was amazing.
It's the ultimate high performance time travel back to one of the landmarks Southern California strips where every year the glory days of drag racing come alive.
The Bakersfield Bash has become the ultimate show and go vintage event of the world. It's the N hr A museum's way of keeping history alive
and fueling a timeless need for speed.
You can look at the economic climate we have right now. This says so much. I mean, no sponsorship here. This is all racing out of your back pocket and we've got the biggest field of race cars we've ever had 300 race cars. We've got 16 top fuelers and 24 funny cars. I mean,
you know, a Nitro is 50 bucks a gallon. And when you put it in perspective,
everybody here is doing it for fun.

You know, it's just, you think it's gonna wear off or something,
but it just keeps on getting bigger and bigger.
Mark. and Melissa G came all the way from England to live out their dream along with their prize 32 Ford pickup.
A lot of people have sort of said how nice the, the truck is. And then when we tell them it's come from England, it's, they can't believe it.
History comes alive at the Bakersfield reunion. Thanks in big part to the hot rod heroes who show up with their historic race cars. We like Al Burglar and his restored front engine fueler
that won races and the first Riddler award in 19
64. If you take the body off that car, it's just a dragster.
So if you put the band of body on it makes it a competition coup.
And I always like something a little different than everybody else had
where all the dragsters other than paint and lettering are pretty much the same.
Well, here's a Hall of Famer whose dragsters were never the same TV. Tommy Ivo was a true West coast top fuel pioneer
and
to balance an acting career with a passion for building and racing dragsters into the record books. First top you were in the sevens and then in the fines,
I had two trips to the wishing. Well, you know, most people get one exciting thing in their life. Well, I'm a lucky listen
of a gun
to do your hobby for a living. I mean, how much better does it get?
Tommy's restored? Barnstormer is a favorite among his many cars,
but his wildest ride is the legendary four engine four wheel drive show boat
out of the 36 cars that I had,
I hated that one the most because it was so heavy. It was like driving a 200 mile an hour Sherman Tank, you know,
but it ended up being my signature car. So I guess I can't look a gift arse in a mouse TV. Tommy's wildest ride as a racer came at 74 Winter nationals.
A famous crash that could have taken his life. That was the most exciting thing that ever happened to me in my life. The thing ran 240 miles an hour upside down and backwards
and disintegrated when it hit the guardrail
and I didn't get a scratch out of the deal. The only thing that made me mad, it scared me so bad. I closed my eyes and missed the whole show.
Meanwhile, the big show on Saturday is the famous Cackle Fest
and the first Australian to run 200 miles an hour. Brought his scorcher just for the sundown ritual. Last meeting up here in March. I got into it for the first time in all those years. And
I wanna tell you
it was a neat trick getting in and even a need a trick getting out
love horse power TV.
This Saturday night ritual brings over 50 finish race cars to the strip to light up the desert sky
and burnout of Nitro as the ultimate tribute to Hot rod heroes. Both here and love departed
an exciting first night finale,
but it's only the beginning here at the 17th annual Hot Rod reunion.
Well, it's even retro nostalgia here on the midway of the reunion but uh no time to stop. We got to get back to the track. The racing here is awesome.
The front top fuelers get top billing, of course,
along with the alcohol, funny cars.
But there are 16 categories within the four main groups. All true to the spirit of the old days. Still fast, really fast
in this qualifying round though. It seemed like for a while that taking out the foam timing boxes was part of the sport.
The track officials had a lot of this.
Now, this fuel altered expo racer missed the boxes by changing lanes.
It's inspiring though to see how gear heads of all generations are getting into this heritage racing thing.
More for the love than the long green and glory
like this lady who wanted to turn her 63 Nova into a real deal. A FX car.
A lot of times the wheelbase was moved up, our wheelbase was made a little wider here. Sometimes the engines were dropped back more into the middle. So that's where you kind of got an idea of it becoming the, the future funny Car. Sherry's just one story among many who have embraced this heritage style racing for its nod to the past
and for its fun factor in the present
and it's just not the veterans who come here to compete. You see guys like Brett Harris
front engine top fueler who during Sunday's eliminations runs a 569 making him one of three
in the Fables 560 club.
I
finally did it. Brett's a second generation
nostalgic racer who offered this comparison
to driving a contemporary rear engine, top fuel car.
The main thing is you're just looking at the back of the motor sitting over the top of the rear
and that's about it getting oil in the face on every run
and just,
it's all by the drivers. See the pants.
Well, no wonder it's so appealing to a lot of young racers like this young lady who races in the alcohol funny car glass.
It's something about the cars looking like how they should and they're going fast but still in nostalgic terms and rules. It just, I don't know, it appealed to me a lot and appealed to my family. And so it's just a way for us to still really have a good time.
A
lot of younger
people out here such as myself that are 20
that are really into it. So I want to see vintage cars stay alive.
Bucky Austin won a series title and the event with this 574 at 244 miles an hour in the finals.
Harris broken the line giving the top fuel win to Rick White
to rent a 581 at 255 miles an hour.

and how cool it is to witness this display of new and old hot rod passion.
One that transcends generations brings history alive and fortifies the future of heritage high performers
