Hey, hold your horses because today we're gonna power up this pro touring pony
today on horsepower TV. We'll finish the wiring and under hood plumbing before we fire up our pro touring pony.
We'll show you how the experts bath up a custom exhaust system before we vote on our one off glass hood with four inch cow
scoop
in our race of the week two lifelong prints off the track become fierce foes at the starting line in an I hr a cop sportsman shootout.
So hang on for horsepower TV.
Hi, welcome again to the horsepower shop where today we get back to work on my pro touring pony project.
It's a 1965 mustang fast back that's already been saddled up for the Ford Motor sports 351. Windsor
cranking out more than 400 horsepower.
Now, we backed it up with a trim
five speed overdrive and a nine inch rear end from DTs
with the drive train installed. We're ready to go ahead and wire the ignition plumb the fuel system and add the exhaust, plus all the other details that we need to take care of before we're ready to hit the road. Now, we're gonna start with our mallory ignition by first finding a good location to mount this control box.
I'll tell you, man, things are already pretty tight under here. For example, on the passenger side that's solenoid and relays are already taking up space. And on the driver's side, we've mounted this fuel regulator and the power steering reservoir. You're right. It is pretty fun under here. But check this out. I believe if we get rid of this washer bag right here, we can mount the box with a couple of hardware store L brackets. Now, by doing it that way, gets it away from the heat and from any moving parts. Let's get this thing out of the way.
But I'm using a couple of gussets here to strengthen those L brackets. So they'll hold the way to the box,
the brackets attached to the fender, well, with sheet metal screws
and then we can bolt down the box.
The wiring is next.
Now, the high fire system has a lot of optional switches and settings for things like high speed retard and even nitrous activation. We're not gonna use either one of them now. So we don't have to hook them up, but we do have to get power to the box and make distributor connections.
And since wiring procedures are different for various applications, make sure to check the directions for the one that's right for you.
Well, we've got some wiring to do over here too. In fact, I've already run the ground for the pump and the main power wire all the way from the pump up here where we're gonna hook it to a relay. Now, the reason that we use this relay is to supply a full 12 volts of power to the pump. So we don't have to tap into an existing circuit and possibly cause an overload. That's real simple to hook up too.
We've got this main red wire that goes to a 12 volt source, the green wire goes to the ignition
and the black wire goes to the ground. And of course, we just plug in the main wire that goes from the pump up here to the relay.
Well, now we can plumb the fuel system from the regulator to the car.
Now, at first we try to use this fuel inlet to feed the car. But,
well, as you can see here,
the hard line for the heater kind of gets in the way.
So we ordered this one from Earl's that gives us the clearance we need.
Plus it allows us to route the fuel line around the motor for a nice clean installation. Now, once I finish up here, we'll use some dash six braided line to finish the installation.
Hey, hey, those lines look killer. Yeah, and won't have to worry about any fuel leaks either. Well, here's something else. You won't have to worry about clean air into the engine. Now, I went ahead and ordered this 14 inch diameter canine filter charger with the optional extreme airflow lid. Now what it does it lets air straight into the carburetor to get less turbulence, more power.
Yeah. Well, all that power is bound to cause more chassis deflection, especially around the shock towers. Plus the suspension upgrades we've made with that pony are gonna cause a lot more movement every time we take a corner. That's why it's a good idea to install a shock tower brace like this one from total control, it stabilizes the front end by triangulating the shock towers with the front fenders
and with a firewall.
Um,
well, after you drill, if you hose the kid boats right in, well, by the way, all the mounting brackets and tubes are aircraft quality aluminum with spherical rod ends that are adjustable to make up for production tolerances. Well, no doubt about it. This is one solid set up now while we get set up for the rest of the project,
don't you get up because there's more horsepower TV? Right after this.
Later on, horsepower two buddies get set for the ultimate battle at an I hr A sportsman shootout
must learn some speed secrets of a champion in two classes of drag racing. Stay tuned,
master exhaust systems. The sound of performance. Flowmaster is race technology for the road inside. Patented deflectors, cancel sound frequencies and improve exhaust flow for more horsepower board torque better fuel economy. And that signature sound bolt on Flowmaster.
All right. Welcome back to the shop as we finish up our engine swap on the pro touring pony. Well, so far today we've installed our ignition, finished plumbing the fuel system and bolted up the shock tower brace. But before we fire this monster up, we got some unfinished business starting with our shifter.
Well, even though we installed a new shifter just a few months back in the Mustang, what you have to keep in mind is that we've also done a transmission swap and that new trim takes a totally different shifter than our ot five did. Now, even though they're both rail type shifters and as you can see, they both
install pretty much in the same way, the main difference is right here in the mounting base. But since they're both her,
well, we can take our old long style handle here and bolt it right up to the new shifter and that'll give us the right look and location that we need for the stock console.
Well, it's almost time for the big moment. That is after I get through dumping in this oil, since our engine is already broken in. We decided to go with some of this low friction synthetic oil from royal purple.
All right.
You ready to do the honors, man. You bet. Ok.
Yeah.
Sounds great.
Of course. It'll sound even better once we get our exhaust installed. Now, what we got here is an American thunder system from Flow Master. It's brand new for older mustangs. They use 2.5 inch mander
bit tubing. A pair of their delta flow mufflers, check this out. It's finished up with these cool polished state
tips. Now, that is a nice kit, but I'll tell you what's missing the connector pipes from our shorty headers down to the head pipes. So it looks like we're gonna have to pay a visit to the local muffler shop. Yeah, but I tell you since the cops around here don't like mustangs without mufflers, we better take the trailer. I agree. I'll go get it hooked up. All right,
we've taken the Mustang to the Meineke Muffler shop in Hermitage, Tennessee where owner Al Wagner and shop Foreman Lee Thorpe specialize in crafting custom exhaust for rods and street machines.
Ok. What do you guys say? Well,
this side is not too bad. Got a pretty straight shot on it. That side. It's gonna take some
pretty severe bending brain around that clutch linkage.
Ok. Well, Chuck and I will get out of your way and get to work. All right,
Lee starts by laying the flow master system in place supported by muffler stands that way he can determine where the bends need to be on the connector pipes.
He uses this hydraulic pipe bending machine to create all his curves.
It's like I nailed it the first try
now we can do the easy side.
After bending the passenger side pipe and lining everything up,
he's ready to weld the pieces together,
man. This is a great job.
You guys do some incredible work here. We appreciate y'all. Let us be a part of this project. Let's get it down and see what it sounds like. I'm ready for that.
Hey, what do you think?
This thing sounds great, huh? I tell you what, I'm gonna follow you back to the shop in the truck.
Hey, thanks again guys. We'll see you.
Keep coming.
Keep coming
looking good.
There it is.
Well, as you can see, we're still missing a major piece of our pro touring pony.
Now, the 351 Windsor that we just installed is considerably taller than the 302 that we took out. So we're gonna need a special hood to clear the air cleaner in the car.
I tell you, we looked high and low to find a hood that would give us the clearance we needed and came up empty handed until we called the guys at Glass tech who made this special one off fiberglass hood for us.
They started with a flat mustang hood and added a four inch cow scoop. Pretty slick. Huh?
Well, let me give you a hand with this. We'll get it mounted up. All right.
Well, not only does this hood look good, but it also takes the original latching hardware and bolts up. To the stock hood hinges. Now, the original springs were just a little too stiff for this fiberglass hood. So I swapped them out for these lightweight replacements that I got down at the local hardware store. Good. We don't have to use the product.
Now,
that is one wild mustang. And you've got enough gallop now to go along with the good looks. And, hey, I'm talking about the mustang here. Well, don't forget the bucks it took us to get here. Well, we finished this project just in time to take a break, but stay with us. We'll be right back with more
next up. It's big block versus high tech, small block in a, one of a kind. I hr a sportsman shootout in Shreveport, Louisiana
horsepower TV. S race of the week is brought to you by Wyotech. The nation's premier technical training school
one
this week, the I hr A World Nationals where as always, it seems like the pro cars get all the brakes, the most money, the best trailers, best parking here in the pits.
Well, like this top
Buer, they always have the big crews helping them get down the track.
What's more it seems every pro racer has a good looking girl or two around to help them in the pits or the staging lanes.
Well, this weekend, the sportsman guys get their moment in the spotlight during the Holly All Star shootout. Now on the line are piles of cash and perks ranging from go cards to prime parking spots,
they'll have to get their own girls.
These guys are, are, are privately funded themselves. They work hard, they build their engines, they use a lot of our products and, uh, we, we ha happy to be out here supporting them. It's a good race and a good event.
You gotta go out there on your game and, uh, do the best you can to win. You know, you can't cut them any slack. Um, it, it's gonna be really, really tough eight guys, $5000. I mean, the money speaks for itself.
The fastest class is top sportsman where Jeff Dobbins has led the pack most of the season in this 99 Firebird powered by a big block 632 Cube Chevy with two stages of Nitrous.
Jeff's already won a world championship of this class using a pretty simple plan for success. Just believe in your dreams, just keep trying. And, um,
one day it'll come, it'll come around for you,
but we always dreamed of doing something like this when we first started back in
the mid eighties and we just stuck with it and the doors open in the right places. This is all we know. This is all we've ever done and all the people we race with, that's our family. So when we're home, we're just bored. Jeff's crew chief is his wife Cindy who plays a big part in making the seven second car go fast and consistent. Jeff and I, um,
work on these a lot at home. We get to the racetrack. It, it's always been, um,
Jeff and I, so I've had to, um, go behind him and watch and listen and learn
it. Definitely dispels any, uh,
of myths or rumors that the women just come here and cook. Right.
I don't see a grill around here.
Well, as the competition starts cooking in this first highly sportsman shootout, it's no surprise that Jeff's heading for a spot in the finals.
What is a surprise is the fact he'll be up against his lifelong friend in their first match ever. We've raced together
for probably as many as 10 years. We have never raced each other
and then it just kind of fits to the world finals
for the first time, run each other in the final round of the Holly shootout.
Sandy's set up in his 99 Camaro is a small block with one of the most unusual engine combinations in the class. Nobody that I know of is running this in drag racing.
You've seen
their fuel injection in many different classes and they still run fuel injection in a lot of classes.
Uh, but not many that run fuel injection, alcohol, gasoline,
uh, and nitrous oxide.
Now, how does he feel about facing his buddy for the championship? Well, there's a lot of camaraderie between us. Uh,
his family does a lot for me and I try to do as much as I can for him. But, uh,
if I get a chance, I'm gonna put a whooping on him.
You know, uh, as the old saying goes to be the man, he's gonna have to beat the man.
Big block versus small block is
no substitute for cubic inches.
It's hard to beat that technology
that
we're looking forward to this. Definitely. It's gonna be a fun time for
a lot of bragging right here.
Finally under a big Louisiana moon. It's show time and time for the final race in the big sportsman shootout.
And as Jeff and Sandy burn out and stage up for a few seconds, these best of friends are about to become worst of enemies.
And what a race, it's Wilkins first off the line, but Jeff Dobbins runs his buddy down to win with a 765. Et actually, he had me three thousands on the tree and, uh, but he couldn't run his dial in, so I was able to
run closer to my dial in. So we got him.
You won't be too hard on him, will you?
Well, maybe for a little while,
it'll be tough at lunch on Monday. I can tell you that
next, there's still more from the track as we jump into the cockpit with a double champion in I hr a sportsman competition. So hang on.
Welcome back to Horsepower TV, and Red River Raceway. In Shreveport, Louisiana.
When it comes to racing, everybody wants to be a champion, right?
And in a series like the I hr a sportsman competition. Well, you got several classes to choose from but hey, why stop at one?
Get ready to be the double champ in two worlds of racing.
This is Anthony Bertozzi, champion, modified racer.
And this is Anthony Bertozzi champion superstock racer.
The Virginia based competitor enjoys the best of two worlds in I hr a competition winning titles in both two I run are, are real similar. I know one's a door car and one's a dragster,
but they both leave on the bottom ball, no electronics. You know, you see the last yell and you go
and we set the cars up.
So I hit the same spot in both cars on a tree
other than the similar setups, Anthony says the key to winning is simple. Just don't sweat the small stuff.
I think if you take a lot of time to think and you stand around, you take
out thank yourself.
You know, if you just go on instinct, you jump out of one car run over, jump in another. You don't have any time using your first instinct is your best.
Ebony's lovely wife, Melinda also races in the top dragster class
and she firmly believes the family that races together stays together even if I don't qualify or don't do well. You know, I still go up there with him and,
and support him and it's a team effort all the way around. He helps me and I help him.
Well, Anthony invited us inside his door slammer Superstock car to see how he runs those numbers,
the stage,
he's in the prestage
stage and you got to be real careful, stay
clean that highly carburetor
Bologna.
But in
first
he is into the lights and then I'm gonna have to take a little break so I can get
ok. He makes it sound easy.
But Anthony is quick to remind newcomers it's taken many years and a lot of mistakes to get to the top. If you listen to races, that
the main thing, they always, if he lost it was because of this guy and because of that and the tire was low and he was over the gay. I mean, it was seven excuses and I tell him all the time, 99% of the reason you lose can be found in the mirror. Just look at yourself.
The champ also reminds up and coming racers that getting to the top is one thing,
but staying there. Well, that's another story in itself.
I tell you them, number ones they say are a bull's eye and you can't keep them forever. And I've, I've won 10 championships in seven years. So
I guess I better ride that horseshoe I can, but I know it's gonna come to end one day.
Horsepower TV.
S hot parts a close up look at the latest in high performance hardware.
Hey, here's a new spin on getting more horsepower and mileage from your fuel injected engine.
It's the Helix Power Tower from street performance and it actually swirls the incoming air and fuel. Now, just bolts between your throttle body and your intake takes about 20 minutes to install and it'll only cost you about 75 bucks.
They say oam is where the heart is. But if they're the source of your ignition problems, this new tester for Mallory can help you track those problems down.
Now, it also is useful for checking your tack and shift lights and it works with most popular aftermarket systems. Now, how much would you have to work to get one? About $270 worth?
Well, dry starts can bring an early end to your fresh rebuild, but now you can prime your oil pump and pre lube your engine with his oil pump primer from a RP.
Now, it features a hardened steel driver and these anodized aluminum guides to keep it properly located
in your engine. Of course, they're available for most popular applications and to get one. Well, you're gonna have to pump your wallet for about 35 bucks. Well, we hope we can uh prime your pump with this. Look at our show next week
it's a street car rumble at Great Lakes Dragway. We'll take you to the track for the action and under the hood of a 2000 horse Pro street racer.
Plus Ford compacts are hot these days. We'll show you how to shop for a budget tuner car. All this and more on the next horsepower TV.
And remember high performance fun is what this show is all about.
And I've had fun on this project. Well, me too. But I can't wait till we get to work on one of my car. I know, but I tell you what, I owe you a steak for helping me on this pony. Well, I think I made a mistake, hooking up with you. But, hey,
this is gonna be your favorite kind of meal. A free one

a lot of bragging right here.
