Toyota Recalls 2023-2024 Sequoia Hybrid Models Over Tow Hitch Cover Hazard
Table of Contents
Toyota has announced a recall for 43,395 Sequoia Hybrid vehicles from the 2023-2024 model years in the United States due to a potential issue with the tow hitch cover. The recall affects models manufactured between August 31, 2022, and July 23, 2024, with changes made to the tow hitch covers after this date ensuring newer vehicles are not impacted.
The Problem
The issue arises from the resin tow hitch cover, which is attached to the rear bumper of the Sequoia Hybrid using molded clips. Toyota discovered that the design of these clips and their attachment points may not be robust enough to securely hold the cover in place. As a result, the cover could detach while driving, creating a potential road hazard that could lead to accidents.
Toyota’s Investigation and Response
The investigation revealed that multiple clip locations were not engaging properly due to incorrect holes in the bumper, leading to the cover’s detachment. As of August 20, 2024, Toyota had received 1,024 warranty claims related to this issue in the United States.
To address the problem, the manufacturer improved the design of the tow hitch cover between August 2023 and June 2024, with the updated cover going into production in early July 2024. Vehicles manufactured after July 23, 2024, are not affected by this recall.
Recall Details
Owners of the affected Sequoia Hybrid models will begin receiving notifications about the recall starting October 5, 2024. Toyota dealers have been instructed to replace the faulty tow hitch cover with the improved version and to make necessary modifications to the rear bumper to ensure a secure fit. This service will be provided free of charge to the vehicle owners.
What Owners Should Do
In the meantime, Sequoia Hybrid owners can check whether their vehicle is involved in the recall by visiting Toyota’s recall website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. By entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or license plate information, owners can quickly determine if their vehicle needs the repair.
