Ford’s $3B Expansion in Canada: Plant to Boost F-Series Super Duty Pickup Production Amid EV

2024 Ford Super Duty | Car and Driver

Ford Motor Company is taking significant steps to meet the high demand for its F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks by announcing a major investment in its Oakville, Ontario, assembly plant in Canada. This strategic move comes amidst delays in the planned production of electric vehicles (EVs) at the site, originally set to commence in 2025 but now pushed back to 2027.

Expanding Production Capacity

Starting in 2026, Ford will begin assembling the F-Series Super Duty pickups at the Oakville plant, adding capacity for up to 100,000 additional units annually. This expansion is expected to create 1,800 jobs, supported by Unifor, the union representing the workers. This is a substantial increase from the 1,400 jobs initially projected for the production of three-row electric vehicles following the plant’s overhaul.

Investment Details

Ford’s investment in the Oakville site is approximately $3 billion, which includes $2.3 billion allocated for installing assembly and integrated stamping operations. This investment also extends to the Windsor Engine Complex, which will see an addition of around 150 jobs to support the increased production of V8 engines for the Super Duty trucks.

Addressing Workforce and Market Concerns

The delay in EV production has raised concerns among employees and the union, primarily due to the potential for layoffs during the plant’s transformation. However, the shift to producing Super Duty trucks offers a reprieve, allowing some workers to return to work a year earlier than anticipated. Unifor national president Lana Payne highlighted that the new retooling plan addresses the union’s concerns, ensuring job security for its members well into the future.

Market Dynamics and Future Plans

The decision to delay EV production is influenced by the need to allow the consumer market more time to develop and to advance EV battery technology. Despite the shift in plans, the company remains committed to its long-term electric vehicle goals. Ford President and CEO Jim Farley emphasized the company’s intent to introduce three-row electric utility vehicles, leveraging their experience as America’s No. 2 electric vehicle brand.

Sam Fiorani, Vice-President of Global Vehicle Forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, pointed out that while the demand for EVs is growing, the market is currently oversupplied, leading to stiff competition and lower profits for automakers. However, he predicts a significant increase in EV demand over the next five to ten years.

Other North American Ford Plant Expansions

Ford is also expanding its production capacity at several other plants in North America to meet increasing vehicle demand:

  • Kentucky Truck Plant (Louisville, Kentucky): Enhancing production of F-Series Super Duty trucks, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator.
  • Ohio Assembly Plant (Avon Lake, Ohio): Boosting capacity for F-Series Super Duty trucks.
  • Rouge Electric Vehicle Center (Dearborn, Michigan): Ramping up production of electric vehicles, including the Ford F-150 Lightning.
  • Kansas City Assembly Plant (Claycomo, Missouri): Increasing production of the Ford Transit van and Ford F-150.
  • Chicago Assembly Plant (Chicago, Illinois): Enhancing capacity for Ford Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Police Interceptor Utility vehicles.

Government Support and Economic Impact

The investment was initially announced in 2020 as part of union negotiations, with both the Ontario and federal governments each committing $295 million to secure the deal. Ontario Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli praised the announcement, citing it as a demonstration of Ford’s confidence in Ontario’s automotive supply chain and manufacturing talent.

Ensuring Future Growth

Ford’s $3 billion investment in the Oakville plant is a crucial move to enhance production capacity for its popular F-Series Super Duty trucks, addressing both market demand and workforce concerns. While the delay in EV production poses challenges, the strategic shift ensures job security and positions Ford to continue its leadership in the evolving automotive market. As the company gears up for the future, the Oakville plant stands as a testament to the their commitment to innovation and growth.
