Hey, we're gonna show you a better way to bang gears on your F body and how to firm up the frame on your pony. So hang with us
today on horsepower TV.
We'll show you how to bang gears better with a high performance shifter and how to stiffen your chassis by installing a Subra
connector.
And we'll offer tips on how to make more power with your headers. Plus a car event for blue oval buffs when we head South and West Palm Beach for the annual All Ford Show.
So hang on for horsepower TV.
Hi, welcome to the horsepower shop. Today. We got something for both you Ford fans and you bow tie guys. You know, we're always on the hunt for more horsepower, but today we're gonna show you some quick, easy and inexpensive ways to help you plant that power.
Well, chances are you've seen us do some power upgrades to my 94 Z 28 before. Hey, it's a great car for the money. It's got plenty of power and the good looks to match. But I've noticed one of the shortcomings is this factory six speed shifter here. It's got throws that are longer than a country mile and well, sometimes finding the gears is harder than, well, finding Joe when it's time to go to work. Hey, I've been at work finding you a replacement for that factory stick. Come check this out.
Obviously, swabbing your shifter won't give you more horsepower, but it will allow you to use everything you've got. You'll be getting down the track quicker by hitting every gear every time. Now, this is the shifter we're gonna install in Chuck's Camaro. It's a sports shifter by B and M
and it uses AC NC machine aluminum base with a stainless steel stick.
That's a nice piece. Now, the stock shifter is mounted in rubber bushings to help isolate road noise and well, that's what contributes significantly to all that extra slop. Now, this B and M piece uses a special bearing mounted right here in the base and that eliminates all the extra movement. Plus the pivot point has been relocated upward to give you a shorter throw.
Now, the first step is to get this console out of the way so we can get to that factory shifter
to do that. We gotta remove the shifter knob which we'll reuse later or the new shifter.
Then this console trim plate and boot should snap right out.
Then with the parking brake all the way up,
remove the handle.
But next, we remove the screws, holding the console in place
and it'll come right out after we disconnect the console wiring harness.
All right, with the console out of the way, we can go ahead and remove the stock shifter handle.
And by the way,
here's a look at the bottom of that rubber bushing. Chuck was telling you about earlier.
Now we can remove the rubber boot that's attached to the floor pan
and Chuck can get to those shifter mounting boats.
Ok. Your turn.
Yeah. Clear out of their Ford Boy. Let the Chevy man in there. When's he coming?
Now, the shifter is held in place to the transmission by these four bolts right here.
Once you get them out of the way,
you may have to pry on the top of the shifter base a little bit because it's factory sealed with silicone.
This little bushing fits right on the ball end of the shifter. Now, once it's cleaned, go ahead and put a little grease inside of it
and reinstall it in the transmission.
Now, before we install the new shifter, we're gonna go ahead and apply a
thin beat of silicone
right along the transmission mounting flange here
to seal everything up.
The kit includes four longer bolts and these oval washers
that allow you to position the shifter forward or back according to your own personal driving style. Now, I'm a pretty big guy and I drive with my seat all the way back. So guess where my shifter is gonna go
once the shift in place,
torque the bolts down to 15 ft pounds
and check the shifter for proper operation.
Next, install a boot that's supplied with the kit.
Then the factory booth that attaches to the floor pan,
then
reinstall the console.
Of
course, the final piece is to get installed are the parking brake handle, the shift or boot and the trim plate and of course, can't forget the knob.
Well, now I'd say that we're just about ready to go and bang some gears, right? You are. Now, you might be wondering why we're not setting the shift stops like we have with previous applications. And, well, the reason is
the Borg Warner T
series transmissions have internal stops, but if you feel like you just must set them well, B and M has machine the shift or base and included the hardware you need. Well, hey, I think that we need to take a little bit of a break, but we're gonna be back to attack Joe's traction problems with his mustang right after this. How's that thing feel not bad
later on horsepower. A hot time in Florida as we head to a blue oval bash full of cool boards for show and go
and on
deck. A
heads up on headers
of getting the right seal to getting maximum flow. Don't go anywhere.
Hey, welcome back to the shop.
You know, this week's show is all about the transfer of power and I'm not talking about from Clinton to Bush what I'm talking about is from the engine to the asphalt. Now, Joe and I just finished installing a B and M ripper shifter in my Camaro here. And, well, now it's time to turn our attention to his mustang.
That's right. A few weeks ago, we dropped a 400 plus horsepower 351 Windsor in this pro touring pony. And, well, I love having all that power, but now the unibody on this mustang flexes, well,
as much as Arnold Schwarzenegger at the gym. However, we got a fix for that flex.
We're gonna let my pony pump some iron and strengthen the sub frame with a set of bolt in connectors. We got from competition engineering.
Now, they're made from thick wall, rectangular tubing that's been fully mig welded and even gusted for extra strength. Plus, they're engineered to tuck tight up against that Mustang's body.
We're gonna get started out back here by first supporting the car on jack stands, then lowering the rear end till the suspension hangs free.
Well, now we can test fit the
Subra connectors and well on some early model mustangs, there's a triangular piece of metal right here that you'll need to trim so the Subra connector can fit up into place.
There we go. Now, this one doesn't have it so we can skip that step.
Well, next, we need to remove this eye boat from the front of the leaf spring. That way
we could slip this into the connector into place and replace that original boat with this longer one that came with our kit.
We now need to thread this 38 boats up through the connector and into the threaded hole of the rear Subra.
Now, once everything's tight, we can jack up the rear end so we can position the front of this connector to the front Subra.
Now on the front part of this Subra connector, we're gonna use these holes right here so we can drill all the way through the sub frame.
Then we're gonna install these bolts that come with a kit.
Now with the bolts in place, we can go ahead and tighten them up with a 916 inch wrench.
Oh Hey, Joe. Bring me a 916.
You don't have it.
No, you had it last.
Oh
I thought you had it. No,
you had it last. Go get it. Stand by
do,
do,
do,
do,
do,
do
nothing like having neighbors when you need a tool.
Hey, Mark, what's happening?
Good to see you
mel. How's it going,
man, Barry?
Hey, Joe, how you doing Stacy? Listen,
you gonna be using this for a while.
You're kidding.
I'll bring it back.
All right. Go ahead.
Oh, by the way you guys show. Really? Got pop. I got you, man. You'll think pop. You don't bring that wrench back.
Was it?
Mhm.
Hey, thank you very much. Hey, wait a minute. This is my ranch. There's my initials right there.
Hey, this is my ranch. I've been looking for this thing for months.
Of course, you just follow the same procedure for bolting up the Subra connector on the other side.
And now that old Mustang's chassis ought to be tighter than Joe's Wallet when it comes time to pay for lunch. I heard that. But speaking of money,
we told you these projects would be inexpensive as well as quick and easy. Now, the shifter for Chuck's Camaro set us back about 100 60 bucks. The Subra connectors for my car about 90
and now to install that shifter, uh it's gonna take you about an hour out in the driveway and
well, you need to allocate about two or three hours to install the Subra connectors all time well spent.
But now we gotta give some time to our sponsors, but we got a lot more show to go. So stay with us
next high times in the Sunshine State as action heats up at the annual Fords only show. Stay tuned.
Horsepower happenings is brought to you by Wyotech, the nation's premier technical training school.
Hi, welcome back. Let me ask you something. Do you flip out when you see a vintage Fairlane like this?
That's the side of a 59 galaxy. Send you in orbit.
Are you mad about all kinds of mustangs? Well, you've come to the right place here in West Palm Beach. It's an all for
show.
Where the blue oval boys and girls have their own fun and fast ties
with other Fords are people, I guess that can relate to their own, you know, Ford fantasy, a
fantasy of history and horse power where you'll find a fair amount of fairlanes, several low flying falcons, even a couple of pool Cougars. But mostly it's Mustang,
the favorite among Ford fans who want the most practical platform,
high performance and low ETS.
It's a fast car. It's a easy car, cheaper car to buy. And uh I think a lot of guys like to build up just because of that purpose and expensively, I've got six of them and that's, it's all around Mustang.
Well, that's all I got. Ford is the first car I ever bought. This is the original car I actually bought when I was 17. It's a uh boss 302308 cubic inch. It's 40 over.
Um, we're using a four speed, a top loader with Liberty Pro
shift gears in it.
583 rear end.
And uh so far my best time, not today, but my best time is 1009 at 100 and 38 miles an hour. Mike Ardito and his childhood friend, his 69 Boss 302 recently got back into drag racing after a 20 year hiatus.
Now he and his famous
Ford are hitting the tracks and while breaking no records, grabbing lots of attention and good times.
Meanwhile, ke au
sport of choice is the 67 fast back with the original 289. Now running in the upper nines, thanks to some serious hot riding.
It weighs 2050 pounds and made 485 horsepower.
Um It's got a 586 gear with a Chevrolet power glide transmission. Most people swear it's a small block Chevrolet, but
you know, we got to lift the hood and show them once in a while. It still is a little tiny 289.
This annual Ford Classic is quite a carnival with everything from jet cars to the super wedge thunderbird wheel stand,
but mostly it's a blue oval bash where Mustangs are matched up in both bracket and heads up quarter mile flash.
Now, some of the hottest races are in the outlaw 50 competition. It's a heads up type event and it's run what you brought. Hope you brought enough nitrous looks like this race will brought more than enough
Grace Cooker and Larry Albright brought their ponies to race in the outlaw event proving that the couple that runs together stays together.
It does good things for a relationship.
I'm not nagging at him to come home or get out of the garage because we're both underneath the car together working on it. Who is the best branch of among the two of you?
He is,
I am
who's the best racer
about
him?
That would be me, he's probably better driver.
Well, neither trace nor Larry made it to the finals. But Michael Lickliter
did and surprised himself by winning the outlaw shootout with a 929 at 100 and 45 miles an hour. Did you think you'd take this thing?
Uh,
not really. I just want, came to race but I did. So
it's over now
until next year. That is when more of these Ford freaks come back to the Rosso Motorsports Park
to celebrate the power and beauty of the cars. They love and love to race. A lot of people uh come out are really, really serious. I'm serious, but I'm serious to have fun
next. It's never the same old grind on Quick Tech. We'll show you how to get more out of your headers. So stay with us.
Oh,
today on Quick Tech, we're gonna give you horsepower heads a little heads up on something you probably don't think a whole lot about
as you know, an engine's power is directly related to how efficiently you can move air in and out of it.
Now, a lot of you guys have already swapped camshafts and intake manifolds, even poured and polished your heads in the quest for more power. But
what happens to the exhaust once it leaves the engine,
chances are you've already upgraded your engine's exhaust system with a set of headers similar to these,
but getting the most out of your headers and
loves a lot more than just buying them and bolting them on. For example, a header leak can rob you of 10 to 15 horsepower by causing turbulence downstream from the exhaust port. Plus the noise is a real pain in the gas. Well, here are a couple of tips to help you get the most out of your headers.
Paper gaskets are popular because they're inexpensive, but they're the most likely to cause a header leak. Uh By the way, they're not really paper, they're made from a high temperature organic material. Now, if you use these, try soaking your set for an hour in water before the installation,
that way, they'll conform to any surface irregularities on the head or flange or the head.
Of course, if your bucks up a set of these copper gaskets will solve all your problems,
they've got old rings around each port that allow them to crush and give you a superior seal. Plus the copper material itself can withstand extreme heat and pressure.
You can also improve the possibility of a good seal by
chewing up your head or phalanges with a flat file.
Now, it's also a good idea to apply a thin bead of high temp R TV around each one of the ports before you torque them down. Now, speaking of torque don't over tighten your header bolts or that could warp the fans and of course, that'll cause a header leak as well. Now, while you're filing around the ports, go ahead and look down in there. Chances are you're gonna see some welding slag and some sloppy welds that could cause turbulence and cost you some horsepower.
Now to improve the flow,
you can touch up those areas with a dye grinder but don't get too carried away or you could grind right through the pipe.
Of course, coated headers like these from jet hot can help generate more horsepower by
holding in the heat and improving combustion efficiency. Good tip. Now, since all that exhaust heat is gonna go out the tail
pipes, well, you're gonna notice cooler under hood temperatures as well. And who can argue with the cool look of coated headers
me. But here's one final tip to help your headers hold their torque. You might wanna try some of these locking safety boats from stage eight. Once the boat is tight, you slip on this locking tab, the E clip, it's gonna look like this and I'll tell you what these boats are gonna stay put. Well, we hope you stay put because hot parts is next
horsepower TV
S hot parts. A close up. Look at the latest in high performance hardware
racers were quick to realize the performance potential of G MS LS one small block and so was A T I.
They've developed a pair of under driven super dampers for the LS one. This one's 10% for your street machine.
This one here is 60 for all out racing. Now, each feature serpentine accessory drives and fully degreed timing rings plus their sf I certified and prices start at about $200.
They say a slammed ride is a cool ride and it is right up until you hit that first pothole. And that's where these rod ride plus bumpers from Eaton Spring come in.
Now, they're a rubber helper spring designed to compress under load and keep your frame from bottoming out.
And depending on what size you get,
they'll support up to 1000 additional pounds without compromising comfort. Now, they've got them for most applications and most budgets prices start at about 40 bucks.
If you've got an OGM muscle car in your life, you can update your old flame. Now, with this, he I distributor from Protonic,
it's called the flame thrower for good reason.
That's because the module here and coil are designed to work together producing 67% more energy than stock with no misfires up to 7500 RPM.
Now it features brass terminals for maximum voltage transfer and adjustable advance for fine tuning your performance. Of course, you'll have to advance about $230 to get one.
Well, how about an advanced peak at next week's show?
Here's a look.
It's a cool chassis build up for a classic Chevelle with new tubular control arms springs,
brake rotors and calipers,
a quick ratio of steering box and even a 12 bolt rear end.
We'll go drag racing at the hub city shootout in Mississippi
must offer some hot tips on welding, both stick and,
and remember. High performance fun is what this show is all about.
You're gonna help me get this car off the lift now. No, I've worked on Fords enough this week. Let's take the Camaro for a ride.
This new shifter,
right? It has been a long day. Let's go.
Where are you gonna take us
wherever you want to buy lunch. How about that?
Oh, there you go again.
