Which U.S. State Has The Most Irresponsible Drivers in 2022?

In a report by SmartAsset, traffic fatalities have been on the rise in recent years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 42,915 traffic-related deaths in 2021, reaching 10.5%. This was a surge in comparison to the previous year in which there were 38,824 traffic deaths, despite fewer people driving due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the wake of this increase in motor vehicle fatalities, SmartAsset analyzed data to determine which of the 50 U.S. states have the most irresponsible drivers. The rankings are based on four metrics:

  • Percentage of uninsured drivers
  • Number of driving under the influence (DUI) arrests per 1,000 drivers
  • Number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven
  • How often residents Google terms like “traffic ticket” or “speeding ticket.”

According to the findings, the top 10 states with the most irresponsible drivers are:

  1. Mississippi
  2. Tennessee
  3. California
  4. South Carolina
  5. Arkansas
  6. Missouri
  7. Nevada
  8. Kentucky
  9. Arizona
  10. Colorado & Florida (Tie)
