This Is What The New USPS Mail Delivery Trucks Will Look Like

The United States Postal Service (USPS) will be receiving a new line of mail delivery trucks in 2023 and you’ve probably noticed that they look rather… different.

Designed by Oshkosh Defense, which specializes in producing vehicles for military purposes such as Light Tactical Vehicles, Heavy Tactical Vehicles, MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected), and ARFF (Air Rescue Fire Fighting), the NGDV (Next Generation Delivery Vehicle) will be the main mode of transportation for the USPS next year. Available as both ICE and EV, the automaker received strict design constraints from the US government in order to meet requirements for step-in height, glass height, vision angles, internal height, and max roof height.

These constraints were also designed around the mail carrier’s ability to reach a mailbox while seated inside the vehicle, as well as their ability to see the ground around it. Nir Kahn, Plasan design director shared some of his early drafts of the vehicle online back in 2021.

“We’re incredibly proud to build the USPS NGDV. It is designed to be the modern, safe, dependable vehicle the carriers have been waiting for,” says John Bryant, Executive Vice President, Oshkosh Corporation, and President, Oshkosh Defense. “Facility preparations in South Carolina are well underway and hiring of team members has already begun.”

The initial order is for 50,000 NGDVs and has an estimated value of $2.98 Billion
