Is Ford Developing a Corvette Stingray Competitor?

Well, this isn’t what we expected to see today. With so many major auto manufacturers opting to go electric, we figured the horsepower wars were transitioning in another direction. However, today, GM Authority revealed a story about the blue oval obtaining a Chevy C8 Corvette Stingray for benchmarking purposes. The car was a Coupe body style with Torch Red paintwork and the Z51 Performance Package.

Although the purpose of Ford benchmarking this C8 Corvette Stingray is still unknown, it raised some eyebrows. The blue oval currently offers two separate Mustang models – the Mach 1 and Shelby GT500, which could easily be considered C8 rivals. The pricing and performance are similar, but the GT500 produces much more power than the Stingray.

For Ford to make a model that competes with the Stingray would be to try something very different. For example, the C8 Corvette was a bold step into the future by moving the engine placement. Is this something that Ford would consider? Of course, this is merely speculation at this point, but Ford has several exceptional vehicles that run with Corvettes. The primary difference they must achieve is creating an “attainable” supercar, which is what the new Corvette has been deemed.

It’s unlikely these are the blue ovals plans, but seeing a benchmark car like this is sure to get the enthusiasts talking. There is one trait the C8 and Shelby GT500 have in common. They’re both equipped with dual-clutch automatic transmissions. That’s about it, and this could be something as simple as Ford dissecting the GM transmission to find ways to improve their own. However, that’s not something we’ll ever know.

Maybe it’s something, maybe it’s nothing, maybe it’s everything, but seeing an auto manufacturing benchmarking a vehicle is certainly worth noting. Ford has been busy lately testing the competition, evident by their benchmarking of a Jeep Gladiator.

We’ll continue to keep you posted as more information comes available, but seeing a new Ford muscle car that competes with the Corvette Stingray would be a welcomed addition.
