Ford Patents Bolt-On Dual Axle Suspension Mod To Transform a 4×4 into a Dually
The 2024 Ford F-150 brought with it a refreshing new look for the next model year. It has a newer front fascia, more high-tech gadgetry as standard equipment, as well as a reworked tailgate. While it fundamentally remains the same truck that has been the best-selling pickup in America for decades, there is a possibility that a new suspension patent could change the game for future pickups.

Specifically, Ford recently filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that would allow them to transform their 4×4 pickups into a 6×6 Dually. This bolt-on suspension extension kit would be attached to the already existing suspension on a Ford truck, which consists of six-lug axles similar to those of the F-150.
Can Any Ford Truck Become a Dually?
This suspension extension kit could also be equipped with both an electric motor and a rechargeable battery, making it a drive axle. By using this approach, one could turn their standard 4×4 into a 6×6 Dually with a plug-in hybrid support drive.
Essentially, the purpose behind this modification would be to convert a four-wheeled truck into a more capable and work-oriented six-wheeled truck. That, and who doesn’t love a Dually?
Of course, just because Ford filed this patent, it shouldn’t suggest that the company is going to follow through with the production of this suspension mod. If anything, the company’s intent could be to merely protect its intellectual property and the parts used in this system, rather than the system itself.
