How To Diagnose and Straighten a Jeep’s Bent Frame
Assessing The Damage
Begin by carefully evaluating the front end of the vehicle. You need to inspect the engine area to confirm that none of the wreckage reached the vital components. First, check the alternator to verify that it is fine. Next, inspect all of the belts and pulleys to make sure they are fine as well. You should also look at the condenser and the radiator to ensure that both are still usable.
Once those components are checked, turn your attention to the frame rail. Observe the crumple zones. Check if the frame rail compressed about 2 inches. This compression indicates that the frame successfully absorbed the energy of the collision. If the rail is compressed but the engine parts are safe, the vehicle is a good candidate for straightening.
Pulling And Straightening The Frame
To perform the first real pull, get a mole clamp. Use an impact gun to lock this clamp down onto the front of the rail. Pull straight out using the bumper attachment point.
Before applying pressure, weight down your pulling chain with another chain. This extra weight acts as a safety guard in case the clamp pulls loose or tears out a chunk of metal and goes flying. There are five tons of force against this metal, and that much power deserves some respect.
When you begin pulling, make sure to pull and release the energy. This cycling wakes up the metal’s molecules and makes the pull both safer and easier. As you operate the equipment, listen carefully to your pump. If you hear the pump slowing down, it is loading up, which means you may need to reposition your clamp.
You can also use a BFH as a helper during this process. Look for kinks. Use the BFH to help persuade the kinked metal back into shape. Combining these methods with pulling and some patience will return the metal to its original position.
Measuring Factory Specifications
After completing the pulls, you must verify the alignment of the frame. Use a frame dimension guide and a tape measure to check your progress. Measure the frame rail to ensure you are within a quarter inch of the factory specs. You also need to look behind the main damage area. Check the rest of the rail to make sure there are no other kinks or wrinkles behind the repaired section.
Finishing Touches
Once the rail is straight, you will need to perform some minor cosmetic work on the apron. You should also do a little bit of cosmetic work on the side of the rail itself to smooth things out. After these minor cosmetic steps are complete, the frame is ready for the next phase.
Taking the time to properly straighten the frame will get your metal back to its original position. By using the right clamps, monitoring your pump, and persuading the kinks with a BFH, you can successfully return the metal to its original position. Now you can move forward with confidence when hanging the new sheet metal.
