Today. White knuckle racing in the woods. It's the world off road championship then. It's Mu

New Street fighter. The fire bolt XB 12 plus Tommy G completes our Harley and Project of the week.

Hey guys, welcome to T DC and the ultimate off road challenge.

I'm Alan neighbors. And today we are going to find out who is the best in the woods.

It's east versus west in the world off road championship. Cool, cool.

Be a good time

with five grand on the line. The smack talking was on proving that the East Coast West Coast rivalry isn't just for rappers.

When you say the West Coast,

typically it's California style of riding. It's more the desert,

uh faster, way faster. When they say it's a wooded area.

There's, that means there's at least two trees on the course.

Back east. A

tight wood section is uh your radiator shrouds get caught on the trees and you try to get through. It's really, really tight. Like the Pacific Ocean

down with the Atlantic.

Uh

afraid to pick up some gears, grab some gears and go fast. East Coast boys are too afraid to put in 4th and 5th gear. The west coast is kind of just like you get done at the end of the day and use the pot and you use the air hose and you wash your bike. You know,

we rebuild our bikes when we're done riding East Coast.

Neither east nor West Cooper land was the perfect track to settle. This age old argument.

This place has got a little bit of everything. It's got a little stuff for the west coast guys that you, you know, they're used to the high speed stuff. It's got some fast fields and got a good Motocross track here, but it's still got some tight woods and stuff. So us Ohio people feel kind of comfortable out here, so it's gonna be awesome.

You know, the trees make things a little more interesting because, you know, you get off course and you hit one and they don't move, yell at a tree, you could say every word you want to say this thing thing and it just chills there. Like what's up, man?

You want some.

So

that, that's what I say to trees.

So we're here to represent the east side terrain is a little bit more similar to what we're used to. So,

so it might be in the middle, but it's still, uh

I would say we still have

the upper hand,

you know, you have to use a lot of body English and wiggle through the trees and, and kind of figure that out. So,

you know, I like that aspect of it. I like it, the more technical, the better warmer MX Ers like Lance Smell and Scott

Cheek have added another chapter to their careers.

Thanks to a Motocross section and each of them,

I'm a motor crosser

generally, but I've ridden trails and off road my whole life. So it's a good second career for me. Finally in my career, you know, I've gotten older

and this is the time. So I'm out here

and giving it a shot. You know, it's really challenging and it's,

yeah, I'm looking forward to the, the journey. But wait inside the off road camp feelings are mixed about the Motocross racer invasion. If these motocross is out here, they know how to do the big jumps, but they gotta make it two hours. Motocross guys are, are, are, you know, they're different off road guys, we're different, you know, they probably think we're kind of a little goofy go bounce off trees and, uh,

you know,

when you see those guys flying way up behind the guy, you know, I've been here a little

group,

you know, we're gonna really be pushing one another all day long. You know, we get out in the fields and on a motocross track, those guys are gonna be railing and we're gonna be hanging off the back trying to keep up and then when we get in the woods, we're gonna be like on a trail ride cruising and those guys are gonna be like, wow, you know, they're gonna be trying to keep up with us. So

it's gonna be awesome.

I,

I personally, I don't know,

I get along with everyone. I'm a pretty happy guy and

if someone wants to race a motorcycle, let them race a motorcycle. I mean, I got no complaints with that in the history of off road racing, there hasn't been a better brother combo than Brian and Patrick Garrahan.

That's good. Most of the time. You know, we have our moments but you know, it's good to have someone pushing you. We get a ride together all the time and, you know, see how we're doing,

push each other and uh you know, help each other, like set up or whatever else we need help with. But it's good having someone doing the same thing

between them. They've won six gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the prestigious international six days in.

But Brian isn't as quick to credit his brother for their success. Eat a lot of Ds drink a lot of milk.

Best thing to do. Maybe it is the donuts because lately Ryan has gotten the best of his big bro on the track.

I broke my leg a year and a half ago and since then, he's been sort of beating up on me, but

I'm getting healthy and I plan on getting back to him. So

it happens it's just family rivals. You know what I mean? He's the older brother. He's a little bit jealous of the younger brother. So, when healthy, who's that?

Ryan or Patrick? It's a toss up in between us.

If you get us on go Karts, I think it'd be dead. Even

East versus West Motor Crosser versus off road brother against brother. This race had more showdowns than a Jenna Jamison, Phil. But they all had something in common.

It's muddy.

You think all the stuff besides the Motocross tracks? Really tacky and good. And

on the Motocross track where it's muddy, just loosen up, relax and let the bike go where it wants to go.

Different riders vary,

you know, but it's mainly just, you know, just point and,

and give it gas,

the mud will stick to your bike, the bike will get heavy

and you just get wasted. You just get so tired of, you know, maneuvering the bike around.

It just takes a lot of muscle and you just got to kind of ride with the front end real light. Keep your weight over the back and just keep it thin. I'm glad to be here. Couldn't be anywhere else better than being on the couch

playing with. You know, what? Eating some fruit all the ways. No,

I didn't mean

it fun. Gotta go play

thing around with some trees.

Have some fun out here. Bad day race is better than not any good day at work

that my friends is a very profound statement of fact,

there's more red clay action from Oklahoma right after this.

Now, if you want to win in the woods, you better have a lot of grit, a good bike and a plan

two hours of tongue hanging out

that

I love it. You know, I like the fact that we've got a long time to make everything happen. You know, you have two hours so you have plenty of time to settle in and, and figure the track out.

Oklahoma red clay. Uh It's, it's good soil, tight trees.

Um They've blown it out with a little bit of rain that we had earlier in the week. It's actually good. There's no dust in the trees and so um trails packed wide, it

go in the mud, cross the rivers, get a splash, splash, ding, ding,

it'll show some bling bling, do some big air for the girls. Uh

You

have a lot of fun. I mean, you get a

mass start by the gate so you get a little motocross experience playing some bars with some mo

guys. Uh,

pretty cool, just neat courses, you know, cool courses every time

and uh there's some good competition, so it's gratifying to do good. One of the racers smil had to deal with at Cooper Land was Ty Davis.

Davis Rocks

man

over the course of his brilliant career. Zip tie as he's otherwise known has done and won them. All. Yeah, I've done a lot. I've won Supercross championships. I've won Mall

Hall 1000. I,

I've won,

you know,

Indi

champion

we have here and Allen championship,

um, you know, best and Desert Championship. I've pretty much done everything soon after his 1990 Supercross title. He made the move to full time off road

and the legend was born

off road racing is, uh,

it's, it's different. It's the pressure. You don't have the pressure like you do in Supercross. You know, Supercross is a lot more money there. You're, you're pressured to win. You're pressured to do good off road is a little more kicked back. It's a lot of family oriented. You can bring out your, you know, your kids, they can race too. There's no big pressure.

Um It's more of a family type atmosphere, family sport. Zip tie came into the final on the cusp of clinching the East west and overall

worct

proving at age 35. Even father time can't catch it.

Yeah. Ty is dang old man and I just can't seem to keep being him. He's a pain in the ass. I tell you, he's a good writer. I mean, he's 30 something years old and I'm 20 something. It's like, come on, why can't I beat this old guy?

But I can't, I can't knock him. I mean, he's a good rider and a good supports the uh sport out here and uh

he's a good person. Ty is still winning races, but he's got one eye on his post racing life.

One that includes running a team out of his fat new 18 wheeler.

I'd like to have a race team

and, uh, help the younger riders and, and give them some of my knowledge that I've learned throughout my whole career, you know, racing. So that's where this comes, comes into play and I can help the riders, I can bring their bikes back to the races, you know, and, uh

I think it's, it's a lot of fun. It's a lot of fun helping a kid and watch him, you know, succeed.

So I, I enjoy doing that as his hall of fame career winds down, he can say without bragging. I'm good.

Really?

There's still people that haven't accomplished what I've, I've accomplished and I have a really good career so far.

You know, I,

if I quit racing tomorrow, I'd be happy with what I've accomplished

three titles on the line. Ty didn't crack, taking third place for the Wor CS Tri.

I'm really excited, you know, that was, that was my goal. And, uh, you know,

with everything that's happened in the last few weeks, I'm really excited. It's pretty cool to be able to wrap all three up behind Davis Pearson and Baby Garrahan fought over fourth with the edge going to the desert specialist. It sucks that we're fourth and

just

messed up at the beginning

for the win. It was the battle between the X

motor cross

ant smell and scotching

smell went long before pitting and the strategy paid off.

You know, I got a pretty big tank and this forro gets good, good mileage. So I just waited and waited and waited and filled her up. So I, I wanted to get the biggest lead I could. So when I pitted, they didn't catch back up and it worked out

well, patience and smart pit strategy paid off. Congratulations to Lance Smell

Up next. Fuels new big block, the fire bolt XB 12.

Now, if you think Japan and Europe are your only choices when it comes to trick sport bikes, what you're about to see may change your mind

looking for something different.

How about a rogue American sport bike with tons of group tours.

The latest and biggest from Buell, the new fire bolt XB 12 R.

You've got the guy who's just set on buying an American product who would rather have a bike that handles a lot better and something real sporty and high performance oriented.

And so that customer would also go for this. It's, it's the only American sport bike out there.

This awesome Street Fighter is a marriage of conventional V twin power and unconventional chassis design.

The cool thing about this bike is that they've really gone out of their way to, to try some different things that,

that bigger companies don't have the guts to do

like a lightweight multitasking frame,

a

unique rigid aluminum design that doubles as the fuel tank to lower the center of gravity.

The hollow aluminum swing arm serves as the oil reservoir.

The chassis is, is fascinating because it's, it has one of the shortest wheelbases of any sport bike made. This bike should just really turn on a dime

and it does

in its class, it's a lightweight at just 390 pounds, but it's a heavyweight when it comes to power.

The fuel's

dyno numbers are impressive.

It strokes big blocks. Quartz

engine makes 100 and three horses at the crank and a hold on tight. 84 ft pounds of torque. Thanks in part to tuned headers and a flow sensor valve in the muffler that electronically controls back pressure.

A five speed gearbox complements the bike's power band but only to a degree

at really low RPM.

The, the bike isn't that smooth. The motor isn't very smooth. It takes getting up into that middle RPM range for it to really get into its comfort zone and work really well.

Gets to the rear wheel through a belt drive system with lash tensioner.

Big Buell

loves attacking the corners thanks to a pair of 41 millimeter adjustable forks and its innovative ZTL front brake.

Well, one of the cool things about the brakes that I think is really innovative is that

it's got a, a perimeter rim brake which

is buell

calls a, a zero torsional load brake.

And what this does is it just takes a lot of the load off of the,

the actual hub and moves it to the outside of the wheel and it's got a six piston caliper. So that

really will, will help get the thing stopped

with an MS RP of 10, 995.

Buell's best sport bike runs hard, stops short and turns quick

if you meet one on the back roads, approach with caution.

Most likely it's looking for a fight

that Tommy G in our project of the week.

Welcome back to Top Dead Center. I'm Tommy G. We know you Harley guys like to customize your hogs. Well, we're making our 2002 super glide more than just a show bike. We made it a monster.

It all started with Edel

Brock's 95 inch performance kit

with bigger pistons and a set of their performance heads.

Then we added the kit's intake manifold, a bigger carburetor

plus a hotter ignition

camshaft

and hookers two into one exhaust.

The engine mods alone added an additional 29 horsepower to this already bad V twin.

Today, we'll add a little bit more performance and some major restyling.

But first,

let's add some more cranking power

for safety. We'll disconnect the battery before performing any work on the bike.

We're going to pull the old starter by first draining the oil, then removing the primary case cover

back the tab on the jack shaf lock plate,

then unscrew and remove the bolt from the starter jack

shaft

on the other side, remove the cable,

the wires

and I both the starter.

All right.

Check out the replacement. It's power masters, Harley Davidson billet starter,

fully chromed with 24 Karat, gold plated battery stud for better electrical connection.

Of course, you don't have to put on a new starter,

but with 40% more torque than stock

and this show chrome finish,

we couldn't resist.

I

nice.

Now, I'm going to get the bike off. The electric lift

says the wheels need to be off the ground to swap them out.

I know what you guys are saying. Another wheel and tire swamp

relax

on our dirt bike. The upgrade was for better performance.

The CBR need a new steel after a bad wreck. But this upgrade,

this is strictly for looks.

Well, how do we do this time?

This is a one piece forg chrome wheel from RC components.

It's the 18 inch outlaw model

with no bolter seams. It's so clean,

but it's not enough chrome

to really get noticed. We're going to bolt on R C's forged belt pulley

and their elite polished stainless rotor

with the rear pulley and rotor mounted.

We'll bolt up the front and mount both tires

in 1985. All Harley Davidson models except the sportster went to a belt drive instead of a chain

belts are quieter, not messy

and give you a much smoother ride, plus sprockets wear out

and pulleys don't,

you know, you could drop your bike and keys off at the dealership and have them put all this stuff on for you,

but that takes all the fun out of it.

There is no better satisfaction than doing it yourself.

Now, that's some serious chrome. These RC wheels really give this bike the outlaw look.

We're almost done with our 2002 Super glide.

I'll get the tank on,

adjust the carburetor and ignition

and she'll be ready for break in.

Ok. Time for some new products. Now, how about trading in your passenger foot pegs for the comfort of floorboards. These custom boards are from Cobra. They're chrome plated billet aluminum with vibration resistant inserts

and they're available for all the metric cruisers and Harley's Cobra front rear boards retail for 299 a pair.

Now, if you want that cruiser to stick, check out Avon's New Venom X, the tread on these tires have two

aid and three nylon plies providing a high level of grip, especially for heavy bikes.

Prices on the Avon Venom X start at 100 and $60. Now, if you're planning travel, check out the Metro Super bag from Sergeant. It attaches to your tank with a harness and these tank magnets, it's also got a small top pouch and laced bungee inside a matte pouch, a detachable flashlight

and a compass and clock fob plus two sides pouches and zip panels for expansion.

We really like the Sergeant bag system for its high quality and 100 and $79 price.

Well, that's all the time we have for today, but next week

it's club racing from Las Vegas with up and coming road race star Jeff Tiger

and his GSXR 1000.

Well, thanks for watching Ride Safe. We'll see you then.
