EU Approves of Ban on Gas-Powered Car Sales by 2035

In a report by Reuters, the European Union officially declared into law to ban the sale of gas and diesel-powered vehicles by 2035, furthering the conversion to electric vehicles.

The European Parliament, along with negotiators from the EU nations, agreed that automakers must reach a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions by the year 2035. This decision will prohibit the sale of all new gas-powered vehicles in 27 countries.

“This deal is good news for car drivers… new zero-emission cars will become cheaper, making them more affordable and more accessible to everyone,” says Jan Huitema, the lead negotiator of the EU Parliament.

As part of the deal, the EU aims to reduce CO2 emissions from the sale of new cars by 55% in 2030, which was previously set for 37.5%.

Smaller automakers that produce less than 10,000 vehicles a year will be able to meet different CO2 targets until 2036, in which they must be able to meet a 100% cut in emissions.
